Newest game that you personally consider retro?

Oh man, there's been a lot of this kind of thing lately. By the time I write my own experience down, something newer and more retro will come out! 😅

I would say Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest, but it looks like we aren't getting that one this year or possibly ever.

Unlike 90% of indies who try really hard to imitate ps1 look but fail miserably, this game actually succeed
Not only it looks but also feels like something from ps1

I mean retro is such a broad word. That's pretty vague criteria. I like the Messenger and how it blends 8-bit and 16-bit graphics. Vengeful Guardian Moonrider feels like a blend of Shinobi and Mega Man X

if i had to draw a retro line it would be right after Hotline Miami

By your own opinions and standards, what game is it?
hmmm personally it would be the PS1 graphics like games.
like Morhta or The Citadel, they're not new new game but they all came out in 2025 so that's still pretty new to me.
they're very reminiscence of the classic boomer shooter games.
also they're very good go check em out!
also a little bit of warning about The Citadel, it kind of brutal and borderline fetish gore but story and gameplay wise its very good

By definition even a game that is months old can be considered retro as it's the latin for backward (and by extension the back, before in time and so on).

By your own opinions and standards, what game is it?
To be safe I often consider that 15 years is a good margin to consider something old enough to be considered as such.

Vintage games? Maybe all things pre-widescreen HD, pre hdmi/dvi. I guess that would make wii vintage, and psp too modern.

"But what about pc-"

There were wide-screen GameCube games.

The PSP 1000 also had that feature?

Thanks for reminding me.

Imo widescreen gen 6, & vga dreamcast games are like early 90s movies that also came out on laserdisc. Most people just watched vhs.

You're welcome, I find it interesting how they managed to do it.

Yeah, LDs and VGA in 480p were basically the high definition of their time.

That's very true. I went down a rabbit hole of industry standards once. Before true hd they used to call higher quality than sd signals enhanced definition, but 'high definition' was a generic marketing term (hence the text on model 1 Sega Genesis).

I believe the p in 480p used to denote progressive scan tech for dvds, not sure if that's what the p in videos still stands for

For me 720p is still fine despite no longer being seen as HD by Youtube. I dislike that they are selling for the "optimised 1080p" for some reasons.

I think it's still using a similar tech but I'm not sure.

I think they run a compression setting on older videos to save space on their servers, so what was 720p gets converted to a smaller, crappier file.

At least that's what someone with an old youtube channel said once.

I am going to say Bloodstaind Curse of the Moon and Bloodstaind Curse of the Moon 2 they are modern Castlevania clones that have that retro feeling to them.

Obviously there're a lot of "Retro Inspired" indie games that come out nowadays but I don't think it makes sense to put them in the same specification as actual old games.

For me the last game that really feels like it belongs in the past (and by the past I mean like, pre-PS3 and xbox 360, which is where the "modern" era beings for me) is... probably something like Ridge Racer 7.

Slippery slope that. OK, Space Wars was the last newest "retro" game

Retro styled then?

What about homebrews made recently but can run on older hardware?

Any games that came out 20 years ago are now retro.

There's a real chance that folks born after 2005 will never play a PS2 game.

Kingdom Hearts II,
God of War,
Need for Speed: Most Wanted,
Star Wars: Battlefront II,
Mario Kart DS,
Resident Evil 4,
Shadow of the Colossus,
Guitar Hero and Devil May Cry 1-3

are now all retro.

Accepting this in my heart makes me feel younger!
