Game Description:​

Need for Speed: Underground is a Racing video game developed by EA Black Box and published by Electronic Arts released on November 17th, 2003 for Microsoft Windows.

This is a completely modded version featuring several highly recommended mods and fixes from the community. The most noticeable one from this post being the Definitive Edition high resolution texture replacement mod. The mod keeps the vanilla look of the game but increases the quality of the visuals for a more hires look. Anther mod to increase the visual quality is the Remastered UI mod. This includes several QOL fixes for running on Windows 10/11 and is probably the best way to play the game through PC.

NFSU XtendedInput by xan1242 (Lovro Pleše) - Plugin script to bring xinput support to NFSU games

Widescreen Fixes Pack by ThirteenAG - Fixes for running the game and displaying the FMVs for widescreen higher resolution displays

ZPatch Underground by Zolika1351 - Plugin that fixes the random crashes that sometimes happen when saving

How to Run:​

1. Extract the archive to wherever (it doesn't really matter but if using a protected folder like Program Files be sure to run with Admin privileges)
2. To enable vibration support in the game install the xi.win7.x64.en.msi setup (x86 if using 32bit system) using the Troubleshoot Compatibility option from the right click menu in Win 10 and clicking Test the program... Chose for custom install and uncheck the install of features for the controller settings of controllers you don't need (I only picked the top two for Xbox since I don't have any of the others) when Windows asks if you want to apply the compatibility settings after you're done installing just ignore and cancel it. Win 11 users may need to set compatibility to Win 7 since the Test the program option is unavailable in it. (sorry, the vibration is weak and there's no way to configure the strength)
3. Launch the game using Texmod.exe by setting the target application to Speed.exe and the Package as the .tpf file. It takes a few minutes for the game to load since it's loading the textures (this is normal)
4. Resolution and FMV cropping options can be changed by editing the NFSUnderground.WidescreenFix.ini file in the scripts folder.
5. Unlike the NFSU2 XtendedInput, in this game the controls can be changed for the controller by clicking JoyPad in the controller settings and mapping them how you like
6. You can edit various properties of the game using the different scripts but how I have it seems best unless you want to trick it out even further
7. In the display options of the game make sure they match like the page in my screenshots so that the game will look how it should with these mods.

Note: I know it's annoying and you'd rather not have to wait like how it would be to be on a long loading screen for the game to start, but if you just load the game through Speed.exe and not Textmod then you won't have the correct modded look and you'd be better off playing the plain PC version unmodded. If you'd like to have a plainer looking version of this game, then you can find the last MagiPack version of it in this torrent. Use qBittorent for it, it's the torrent client I always recommend to people.

Nice selection of mods, once again some newer stuff than I had. Going to save this as my go-to extract and play after some tweaking. Thanks for that!

One thing, though. After doing first Underground race, the cutscene is I think in Russian with a fresh-extracted 'install'. Sounds slavic anyway (inb4 it's Dutch). When you select your first bought car is fine. Tried re-enabling the language selector in the widescreen fix ini and selecting English, to no effect. Anyhow, I deleted languages and movies folders in this and replaced with Corepack repack's equivalent folders and that fixed it. Corepack install removes all but English, I think, so that might be why.

Am playing without Texmod per usual (always gives me grief, etc), but might try playing around with Texwizard which could replace that with a nice asi script, but involve unpacking the Texmod package and then making a json with pointers...or something like that.

Do you got a link for that repack? I didn't try any further than the quick race in this (which was dumb of me) but I've been spending a lot of time with NFSU2 since I've never properly played it until now (I have years before but never in a serious capacity) I love UG1 and I used to play it religiously but now I'm starting to think UG2 might be the better game. I like the courses in UG2 better than in 1 since they feel like they have more depth and are more challenging. I love the soundtrack in UG1 a lot more tho. At least UG2 had a Queens of the Stone Age song.

Will this run on windows 11?

Bro if you bothered to read you wouldn't need to ask that. I mentioned Windows 11 twice in the description. Yes this game works fine in Windows 11

I imagine the same way as I ran U2 recently. Run texmod.exe under proton, point it to the tpf file and run.

To this day i think NFS Underground 1 is the best game .

It had the best tracks and the Soundtrack was spot on . It just needed more cars and much more tuning-content for Decals , Bodykits and the cosmetic stuff .

Just playing missions , win prices and upgrade the car . Nothing more .

Magipack did a great job during their run. Only place I could find a working version of Black & White. Building upon their releases would probably be the best bet since they tried to incorporate as many fixes as they could.

I don't know honestly. When installing this I used the MagiPack version from the torrent I linked and the installer setup for it had several supported languages but only one could be chosen. I then manually applied all the mods I mentioned using the Binarius NFS mod tool and some manual file copy/pasting and editing. I believe the Definitive Edition mod only supports English (or Russian if you can find that version of it) since the actual UI stuff is forced to use the language from the files from the .tpf file. But I'm not entirely sure on that since I've not tried it with a different language installed. You can try moving and replacing the language files and see if it does any good. You could also try doing what I did to mod it but using the Italian option in MagiPack from the start

I think this one made me love other racing games later (NFS Hot Pursuit Switch and NFS on Vita, Wipeout Pulse and Pure and 2048, Asphalt 3DS and Vita).

If you like Wipeout I suggest you should check out BallisticNG. It's the true spiritual successor to Wipeout (unlike those few other ones that tried to be) and is heavily inspired by Wipeout 3 (which is my favorite in the series since it's a beautiful PS1 title and the PAL Special Edition version has a good amount of extra content from the first 2 games) I'd even go so far as to say BallisticNG might be the best antigrav racer I've ever seen. You can get it for free at gog-games.to (that's the url) since it's on GOG and has no DRM protection. It's got good support for modding and there's a huge modpack for it that you can find at the Steam forums at cs.rin.ru but I've never tried any of them and always play it vanilla

I should edit the post description. The vibration in this one is not weak at all. In fact it's overwhelmingly annoying and I had to just outright disable it. Every time I tried to steer it would vibrate with way too much intensity. I normally lament the absence of vibration in games and playing PS1 era onwards without vibration feels wrong to me sometimes, but I'll have to make an exception for this one

Just wanted to chime in to say how great it is that Windows abandonware is being uploaded to this repo, these seemingly don't as much love as console ROMs among the retro community. Really awesome to have convenient downloads with the best mods preinstalled. Keep it up!
