Game Description:

Need for Speed: Nitro-X is a Racing video game published by Electronic Arts and developed by Firebrand Games and Entertainment released on November 15th, 2010 for the DS.

Nitro-X is largely a revamped, downloadable version of the Nintendo DS version of Need for Speed Nitro. The game features the typical arcade-style racing found in the Need for Speed series, as well as being pursued by police. Steering the car is controlled either using the stylus on the touchscreen or the d-pad. The touchscreen also includes a map of the current race track.

The title features eighteen "supercars" from the likes of Lamborghini, Pagani, and Porsche. Gamers can also take charge of six other vehicles such as the Hummer H2 in the new Super Pursuit mode where players take the role of the pursuing cops. Racing or pursuing takes place across sixteen tracks that were slightly updated from the original release.

Other features in the game include three "tiers" to the gameplay, a camera mode using the built-in DSi camera, the ability to win awards, and multiplayer for up to four people in local mode. A new racing mechanic called Heroic Racing makes its debut which, with carefully timed button presses, cutscenes are activated that provide dodge moves away from police or various kinds of "attacks" on opponents. Heroic Racing is activated with an on-screen meter that gives players notice that an actionable event is forthcoming.

Players can score bonus points during races by "tagging" the surrounding environment (such as with graffiti) by collecting two floating icons that appear over each track. The tagging occurs automatically once the icons are collected.

How to Play:

(Using the MelonDS DS core in RetroArch)
  1. Make sure you have the MelonDS DS core installed in RetroArch (the one that has DS twice in the name, it's the better one imo)
  2. Download the bios files required for DSi emulation from this page (you will need to find NAND versions for the region matching the version you get, I dunno where the Japan NAND can be found)
  3. You will need to rename the files according to what the Core Information page for the core in RetroArch says. With the core loaded go to Information -> Core Information from the menu to see it.
  4. The bios files go into your RetroArch System directory (C:\RetroArch-Win64\system if on Windows with default install location)
  5. In Core Options for MelonDS make sure that Boot Mode is set to Direct instead of Native in the System section
  6. Load the zip containing the .nds file and the game should boot up and play fine.
Included are .cia versions that can be installed on a custom firmware enabled 3DS using FBI.

Honestly I just assumed it was the deluxe edition of it and it offered more content instead of dumbing it down. I have both of them on my 3DS but I've not really played much of this one past just like 10 mins. My prior comment was wrong af it seems. Thanks for clearing up my misconception
No problem mate, some dsware stuff is not that well documented, sometimes there are special cases like this, it has some minor nicer things compared to the original retail, another upside is that it costed a lot less, like 12 buck maybe, don't know if it was cut down because of the dsi eShop store limit or because EA was being cheap, tho my personal consense it was made has an appetizer, frankly the only real bad thing about it is what they did to the soundtrack.

has someone that played both ds nitro's, just play the normal nitro for the ds or the wii if you can, nitro-x contet wise is inferior and its one of those demo-ish games you would buy on the dsi/3ds cause you couldn't find a copy of the normal game, also music way worse since the whole sound track has been been cutted, speed up and over crusted so it can fit into a single 1 minute-ish song.

Is this one actually good though?
I actually enjoyed it. It's one of the best racing games on DS and the graphics are very impressive for DS 3D. The music kind of sucks but that's a common issue with games like this. It's like a deluxe edition of the regular DS one with a new mode where you can pick from six police vehicles to control and participate in the pursuit instead of running from them. Nitro is one of the most shit on Need for Speed games but both the Wii and DS versions are fun if you look at it as purely arcade racing (like it's supposed to be) and play it not expecting a realistic simulation. It's the most "arcade racer" feeling the Need for Speed series ever reached (and that's a good thing not a bad thing)
