Name an anime which conned you in to watching it.

I made it through half, HALF an episode of Fire Force. I saw a clip from a fight scene online and I thought looked and sounded amazing, and then I found out way later that it was done by David Productions, so that was an automatic greenlight for me. The characters were basic obnoxious anime bullshit, the dub was aggressively mid and the sub wasn't much better, and I just full stopped when the main character did that stupid "Oh I smile whenever I get nervous" garbage with the stupid 90* angle edgy shark teeth. IT WAS SO UNBELIEVABLY FUCKING LAME and I felt genuine second hand embarrassment at that last part.

it was like the creators did not know how to end the show
iirc, Anno admitted that from the start... So that is not a surprise. Then you have the gainax scheduling crunches behind the scenes... People say they ran out of money, but they had plenty, just scheduling was a nightmare and they ran out of hours, again iirc? They had plenty of money, but not enough time. I think that is what gives eva a lot of its charm, makes it feel different and that is something you can't recreate.
If you watch texhnolyze, i recommend paring this with Lain, but you may need more patience for that one.
I said I was a huge Abe fan. Haibane Renmei is probably my favorite anime of all time and Lain is close behind. idk, I should probably give technolyze another try, I just remember being bored for whatever reason.

What's conned?
Pretending something is more then it is, to get a person to invest ever time or money. Like a scam?

I have another one which may not be as well known, but when i had little money for pleasures, so once a month i would buy some anime.

I was convinced to invest in it. Makyo Shinjo, i thought the anime looked cool with all the power and battles being shown, like it was some kind of Fist of the North star contender.

The cover had a dude in a white torn t-shirt with an explosion behind him. My dumb ass at that age thought it looked cool...

The story:
"humans are being forced to evolve, in this crumbling world, one man who has lost his memory awakes in hospital after a car accident, only be attacked by forces beyond his comprehension, will he survive?"

Each episode he beat up the challenge in front of him and absorbed the looser powers. It was a paint by numbers mess with no idea on how to tell a story..

After watching it i felt robbed and wanted to return the VHS, i was told no refunds, and had to gripe over that filed investment for a month till i got paid.

I have been looking to find pictures of the POS OVA, but i cannot, as it seems to be lost media at this point. Which is for the best..

nearly everything i watch these days is with at least one friend present so there's usually some amount of decision process and checking ahead on what we may pick up. one fairly harmless and funny misdirection though was watching Kageki Shoujo, a theatre school anime, because it kept coming up under related series while we were watching Rose of Versialles. i did enjoy it enough but it was kinda silly it only cropped up because the main character really wanted to play Oscar some day and then... never gets to for where the anime leaves off.

something i did watch on my own volition that wound up astoundingly Okay was Sacred Seven, which i purely came across because its opening theme had a big name artist of FictionJunction on it, then finding the show itself was a Sunrise production of all things. naturally it got its planned episodes cut in half in favour of the usual Sunrise affair airing simultaneously so the end result was forgettable at worst. still love the OP though

OHHHH you're the cute snake guy, just realized! Something that has conned me into watching it was the Ace Attorney anime, probably. I mean, it's Ace Attorney, of course I'd have watched it!

However, not only the animation was ASSSSSSS but also the pacing was trying to hard to be exactly like the game and it wasn't fitting. It would have been its own thing and it could have been better, although I don't exactly have any better ideas so not having an anime at all would be better.

For me it’s the 1999 mecha anime movie Gundress.
What made me wanna watch it is because the character and mecha design was done by Shirow Masamune creator of Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed.
How they got him to work on this project still baffles me. The fact that the anime has gunslinging waifus and giant mechas should have been a hit but the producers screwed it up with a lousy plot and janky animation that looks primitive for it’s time.View attachment 62672View attachment 62673
ben the sage has a video about this where he goes over the history of the movie. the production team was basically given leftover scraps from shirow while he worked on other projects. it is a very weirdly handled movie, to the point that the theater release wasn't finished and people who went to see it were given a order form to fill out and they would receive a vhs tape of the completed movie when it was ready.

Realistically speaking I think most of us are a pretty good judge at err, judging anime. Keep your expectations low & never be disappointed type thing. Even when a friend hypes you something sometimes you just know it ain't gonna be a winner lol.
But I think the perfect example here would be the latest Devil May Cry. "Like, it's Devil May Cry man! With Johnny Yong Bosch!" Fire as hell but I guess you never know until you watch it!

Wait, what? Netflix DMC is not a real anime? Fine! Uzumaki, there!
Actually, there's also Blue Lock. Never read it but the manga seemed beloved by everyone so when the adaption was announced...

What did you not like about nanatsu no taizai? ::sadkirby I thought it was fun...

Where to even begin 😩

It started cute and promising as a fun little adventure

until it turned into Power Level scaling bullshit nonsense with a lot of repetitive cliches which you can make a drinking game out of it and kill you

the writing became worse and worse and we couldn't take the plot serious anymore!
our favorite character kept Dying or getting written worse
the male character my friend found hot, Ban is in a relationship with a 1000 years old fairy Loli
a lot of unneeded fanservice and misery porn

Me and my friend continued watching it as a Sunk cost fallacy

Turns out Two Gay men are NOT the target audience for this

Makes me sad to hear that name again, Anime abandoned on hiatus due to family issues. I liked his channel, as he was usually on point about old school anime. Did not agree with all of his opinions, but allot of them.

yeah. hopefully he comes back one day. and when he does, there should hopefully be even more anime for him to review. he said his cut off for anime shows to review is the current year minus 10. he should be able to cover some good ones after he returns.

Season 2 of yakuzoku no neverland. I genuinely thought it would be good or at least better than the manga since it was getting so interesting only for it to be absolute slop. View attachment 63692
Yeah that one is a deep cut for me also, i was hoping for a proper ending related to the manga, and they instead rushed it imho

Maaaan I actually got around to the second half of (netflix) Devil May Cry & the final episode was some of the worst, troll-ish, lame-ass ending I've ever seen in anime.
Playing Green Day's American Idiot during the final scenes of the show is one of the most disrespectful things done to an adapted franchise! ::angrygenjin
Every scene with Dante is cool but holy cow, this was truly the definition of getting conned into watching something...
