I get really nostalgic for the PS1 launch-window titles...

Alien Trilogy
Die Hard Trilogy
Doom
Krazy Ivan
Road Rash
Resident Evil
Return Fire
Warhawk

Used to rent them from Blockbuster. What a Summer that was 😆

Outside of those, most of my favorites have already been mentioned:

Breath of Fire 4
Castlevania - Symphony of the Night
Fear Effect
Legacy of Kain - Soul Reaver
Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Ridge Racer Type 4
Street Fighter Alpha 2 (yes, 2)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (yes - the FIRST one)

I'm sure there's more, but that's the best I can do from memory alone 😅

yooo guys i really want to get into SMT i'm really into fusing demons and stuff but feels quite hard to choose a game.
SMT games with explanations on if they’re good beginner picks

Megami Tensei: Oldest game with a lot of unique jank like enemies de-leveling you and forcing you to grind, don’t recommend as a starter

Megami Tensei II: Paved the way for future games and is still pretty solid overall. Use a guide though, old ass NES game is never gonna have easy traversal

Shin Megami Tensei: Not that bad of a game to go through but use a guide. Shinjuku Mall’s map alone could confuse the hell out of you

Shin Megami Tensei II: This game is pretty brain dead easy tbh, to a degree that’s kinda uncharacteristic of SMT. Still recommend it as it has one of the most interesting stories in the franchise but maybe not as a starter pick cause you’ll be flabbergasted by how difficult the other games are. Use a guide too cause just like its predecessor, it has that Famicom vagueness

Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei: Better way to play Megami Tensei 1 and 2

if: Yeah I’m not gonna lie you do not want to start with this game. Mainly because of the dungeons, they’re very…unique for SMT. And then there’s World of Sloth, worst of them all.

PSX remakes: Never played them so I can’t speak on them. Currently waiting for them all to get Retroachievements, and you probably should too. PSX SMT if is the better version by far for expanded music in one route

SMT Nine: sure is a game all right

Nocturne: Currently the most accessible and ironically despite its difficulty, is a solid starter. You’ll get a feel for the battle system of using debuffs and/or buffs to get past bosses instead of brute force. Previous games also did this but Nocturne makes it a forefront.

Strange Journey (Redux): Great game, I kinda view them as separate as Redux changes a lot of things like the endings and story. Either or, though a lot seem to prefer the original game

IV: There’s a reason people sing this game’s praises all these years later. If you can, pick this one up

IVA: Haven’t played it so I don’t know if the hate is justified. I just know that it’s a sequel that was originally going to be DLC, so there’s a lot of reused music from IV

V: Delisted, moving on

VV: My favorite SMT and absolutely a great starting point. You can pick your favorite demon and with the right setups take them to the end and that’s what I love. I’m mid game and I still got a Mermaid on deck.

These are only mainline and the original games, others are spinoffs and have their own varying reasons to or not to play them first. That said, give Digital Devil Saga, Persona, Soul Hackers, Majin Tensei II, Last Bible III, etc a shot

Here's my take for all of the Megami Tensei games for a first timer

Digital Devil Story Megami Tensei- Don't even bother unless you absolutely love pain, only one Mansion of Heresy the whole game, a high encounter rate, the only way to save is through passwords, and brutal dungeon design.

Digital Devil Story Megami Tensei II- Absolutely the most miserable experience i've had with a RPG. The worst encounter rate that i've ever had the displeasure of trudging through. Even though it laid the groundwork for the series, It is absolutely not worth playing due to the encounter rate being so abysmal and a couple of enemies that can delevel you. Best Famicom ost though.

Shin Megami Tensei- A great but archaic experience. High encounter rate but nowhere near the levels of Megami Tensei II. Piss easy difficulty even without the Hinokagutsuchi, Charm and Jio completely trivialize most boss fights in the game. Great soundtrack that has been remixed into other games. Definitly use a map for specific areas especially ones with dark areas. Be careful choosing Law or Chaos if you are playing the SFC version because you will be locked into a gamebreaking bug even with the new orden's patch. You have to use the japanese version to get through the part then you can switch it back to the patched version.

Shin Megami Tensei II- No more charming or stunning bosses, the difficulty isnt a complete joke but still easy. Has the best story in the franchise and is the best Megaten game on the Super Famicom. Make sure you put at least 10 points into MAG and INT to progress through the game.

Kyuyaku Megami Tensei- better then the famicom versions

Shin Megami Tensei IF...- I played the PSX ver. so I had a much better time with it. Sloth isnt bad at all, complete exaggeration since sealing bell, estoma and fast forward exists to use in the dungeon, unless you played it on original hardware. You havent experienced pain unless you went through the Domain of Envy. A Dungeon that has Moving tiles, teleporters, pitfalls, one way doors, no comp zones, dark areas, dark areas with no comp zones, and your partner gets taken away leaving you without healing and support. PSX version also has an easy difficulty which cuts the moon cycles in half to 3 (which i didnt know about). But the PSX version is japanese only so you cant play it unless you know japanese.

Shin Megami Tensei NINE- can't play unless you know japanese.

Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne-Great game but not for a first timer, even though it's the most accesible through the remaster. The difficulty is greatly exaggerated it's just more tedious then difficult. The best version of this game is the Maniax Chronicle version on PS2 or the remaster.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (Vanilla)- Fantastic game. Second best story in the franchise. Hardest game in the mainline series. Painful dungeons but not the ones you think, sector E isnt too bad (still sucks) but Sector G and Sector H are the ones that are actually really painful. I honestly prefer the og version over the 3ds remake due to the artstlye being worse than the original.

Megami Tensei Imagine Online-Dead

Shin Megami Tensei IV- Favorite Mainline game. It can be a first good megaten game but the issue with it is it can be very confusing to navigate and the difficulty is all over the place.

Shin Megami Tensei IV Final/Apocalypse- Trash game, dont bother.

Shin Megami Tensei V-Obsolete due to Vengeance existing

Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance- The best starting point to the mainline games or megaten in general (along with persona 5). Has both vanilla and the new story so it replaces it. Level Scaling has been removed so that's a positive. Just pick this one to start out with if you haven't.

Here's mine. I quickly made it using topster3 and had to manually add in Einhänder because it didn't exist in the data files. I also had no room to add in Castlevania Symphony of the Night without making the image too big or else I couldn't upload the image.

PS1 is best when it’s being weird, experimental, and one of a kind.

Just choose a game that looks cool for you, the majority of the Megami Tensei games aren't direct sequels. The only direct sequels I can remember are Persona 2 Innocent Sin - Eternal Punishment, Digital Devil Saga Avatar Tuner 1 - 2, and Shin Megami Tensei IV - SMTIV Final (Apocalypse). You can go wild, have fun!

I'm not like an SMT mega fan or anything, I just think the vibe is cool but imo:
SMT1, SMT2, SMT if..., and Devil Summoner
Are all good starting points for classic MegaTen. Each has their own unique setting and atmosphere so just pick the one you like the look of most

My Top 10 are as follows:

1. Spyro: Year of the Dragon
