i've never seen an update that takes up to 30 minutes. Should I be concerned? I can't shut down or restart my PC without updating.

Are you on Windows 11? If not it might be trying to force an OS update to 11, since Microsoft is gonna stop supporting Windows 10 soon.

Hm in that case I have no idea either, sorry.
Man, updates like this make me nervous every time. I'm sure it's completely safe, but I can totally uderstand your apprehension.

I once had a real nightmare experience where Windows forced an OS update that was plain incompatible with my Laptop at the time, meaning I couldn't boot it up anymore.
Which was extra great since there were files on that thing I needed to get through customs at the end of the 28 hour flight I had just started.
I was stuck at the airport for a couple hours until an overworked, tired customs officer just said fuck it and waved me through. Good times.

not OS upgrade, i was already on Win11, just updates

Don't be. Do it when you're going to bed, so when you wake up it'll be done.
Sage Advice

I recently (past year-ish) had a Windows 10 update that took about three hours. I almost thought my computer had locked up, but the little swirly used-to-be-an-hourglass thing was still moving, so I just walked away and left it alone. When I came back hours later, it was done.

This sort of stuff wasn't unusual back in the dial-up days. I always used to set my MacOS updates to install when I was sleeping. Downloading those 85 MB took a little time over 56K 😅

Unplug your PC so it won't update.
it will force the update the next time you turn it on

What? you have the option to Shut down or Restart without updating in there. That's been present since Windows 10.

Anyways, long updates are usually big annual updates, but up to 30 minutes can be 5 minutes.

But my recommendation is, if you're concerned about Windows updates means you're concerned about Windows itself, so better move to Linux. Otherwise, just update when you're finishing your tasks with your computer :)

Man That Remind me that one Time I Turning off My Laptop when it updating Windows 10 then it Broke The OS, i did not lose much because i do Dual Drive.SSD for OS and Applications and Hard Drive for Saving File and other stuff that dont need any Storage high Read and Speed

have u ever tried the windows x-lite version of windows 11 or maybe AtlasOS ?

Try going for it. It could still take less time than that. I've never seen an update estimate longer than 3 minutes. O_O Or maybe I just don't remember.

A few days ago I let my W11 machine resume updates after a few weeks disabled. There were a long list of them and restarting to install them was still no longer than 3 minutes. It had to be 2 restarts though.

I had such concerns for me Windows 10, so to remove my concerns I removed Windows Update and Defender BS and used its policy against itself to make it stuck in a paradox of these "disservices" cannot ever run anymore even if the necessary files for them had magically showed up lolol.

I would recommend the same for Windows 11 users but that BS is unstable like dynamite so it still requires update the run ok but then updates are likely to ruin it. It make me think Microsoft intentionally make updates break Windows 11 so people would keep updating it to fix these issues as a counter-measure to people who made Windows 10 not update so Microsoft doesn't want people to turns Windows 11 into an un-updatable OS. So they may intentionally fuck things up just for an excuse of an update, and then they can do whatever they want with it which what they may do with it depends on your imagination and what kind of ill intent Microsoft may have. ::winkfelix lol

Disabling Windows Update completely isn't something I would recommend. I rather have it manually managed through policies, but depending on the version it is not possible in an user friendly way.

I use Windows 10 LTSC in one of my computers because it is the most stable and clean version of Windows. If someday I move that machine to Windows 11, it will be LTSC as well, I have nothing to do with consumer versions of Windows like Home or Pro. I had my time enjoying debloating stuff but not anymore.

Good idea if this Windows 10 PC only exist to do some basic stuff like only using it to run a program it can run or connecting it to internet. Can you play new games on it lol. I imagine you would need to buy old hardware that even support this LTSC version so you can even use the PC just because only specific hardwares has supported drivers for this version lol.

After me Windows 10 pro got stable and had finalized version enough I deleted its Windows update, this shit doesn't need update anymore. It's okay as it's as I mostly use it to play emulator games and old stuff, only rarely new games just to test them out. I turned the PC into okay to sacrifice machine lol.

Nope, LTSC Windows 10 is exactly the same as other versions, but without the bloatware. Whatever Windows 10 Home or Pro supports, LTSC as well. And even better, because as it is oriented for business, you will enjoy security updates for a longer time. It's a win-win scenario.
