Ah, party members, that little dopamine you get by unlocking a exxtra head in your team, either they lack spells but made it by tanking every hit and/or hitting like trucks, some are excelent healers, others are black magic users that summons hell on your enemies (Often literally) and some has a gimmick that makes them hard to use but worth...

And then there's these pixel farts, vent here that party member you are only using when forced by the game and that otherwise you are content letting rot in the party select section

The only party member thingy that annoyed me the most is in Xenoblade Chronicles X because most of the game forces you to have a particular woman and little girl to be in your party which is unnecessary hindrance when enemies usually take too long to defeat due to BS unbalanced damage to enemy HP ratio. The woman is ok but not the little girl. Usually you would upgrade your character for the best party in mind, but in this game you have to befit yourself for the forced party and your dream party only for side content.

My 2nd annoyance is in Breath of Fire 4. The game changes your active party members constantly so you have to keep switching it. The part of the game that it forces you to play with the guy who uses a log as a weapon is an unnecessary hindrance so much his existence is trivial and only serves as a key NPC for story which kinda "why not make him a party member too" thing on devs' part lol.

My 3rd annoyance is some fat NPC from Radiant Historia in your initial party. His existence is trivial because he is useless but for a long time it's what you have lol.

As for disappointing party members you can unlock, Radiata Stories filled with tons of NPCs for you can recruit around 150 NPC to your party lol. Kinda same shit as Suikoden series.

Elma and Lin are literally the protagonist of xeno x 😭🙏🏻

And as a party member I wouldn't prefer them because I care about other characters instead lol.

It would be ok if they were forced party members for a few main mission but they are almost forced for all main missions is too much for me, or they could be "story NPCs" that despite they are not in your party they are still "the story NPC who follows you". The game made me think like the intended audience of this game is women and horny men and me being a guy who is neither of those felt like a gay/simp/sissy who hangs out with women lol. Yet I'm okay with a forced woman but what the fuck a little girl does in my party lolol. I didn't like this fan service at all, it's cringe fest yet the game is good so I endured.

The game really has decent party members and particular care to get them, yet it's useless especially if you won't care to do side quests. I do care about side quests and in this game side quests were really fun so I could enjoy my "real party" only then lol.

Kurara in Hundred Line. She’s a unit whose sole purpose is setting up towers that buff allies and attack enemies, however most battles end in one turn so you never get any usage of them, and said towers have really poor health, poor range, do next to no damage and can’t be duplicated. She’s the most useless SRPG and Tower Defense unit, no doubt.

Malak and Rafa from Final Fantasy Tactics.

In a game where any character can become anything, is hard to be useless, but oh boy... why would i spend my time powering up late game Rafa and Malak with their weird Stats and Low damage magic when by this point in the game, i probably already have Summoners, Dark Mages shooting Blizzaga and even time mages or Geomancers if i really need some Non-mainline skills?

Edward in Final Fantasy IV. Not a whole lot of use for a bard in that game. Other than that there's Gogo or Umemaro in Final Fantasy VI. But those guys join so late in the game that it doesn't matter if you use them or not.
you beat me to it. he was the first character that i thought of for this thread.
i would say that tabby from dot hack g.u. is a fairly useless character. you get her so late in the 3rd volume that there is hardly anything to do with her. and i don't mean like you get her before the final dungeon. you get her halfway through the post game dungeon on floor 50 out of a hundred. and i don't recall her even joining at a maxed out level, which you would most likely be at that point in the game.
i don't think she even comes with anything interesting to trade for.

Lakilester in OG Paper Mario, not helped for the fact he is the last party member and his skills are already covered by your other members in way better ways, and even in the field his ability merely makes you go for safe zones compared to the far more useful to open combat or solve puzzle one of your companions, for an example of his uselesness a literal baby (Watt) and a clumsy mailman does everything he does and better for less FP
Lloyd in Mother 1
He can be useful if you want (and in this game you REALLY WANT TO) keep your PP use at minimun with bombs and rockets

Also don't be too mean to Edward, thanks to him we have THE line of FF IV

This little shit, the Prince of Cannock is the original useless party member. He is nowhere near as strong or tanky as the actual main Hero in Dragon Quest II, nor has access to the same spells the Princess of Moonbrooke from the same game has access to. So he is stuck on this middle ground of not being a melee attacker nor a magic user.

There is a reason why across the almost 40 years the Dragon Quest series has been around, no other character has anywhere near close the same amount of artwork where the character is actually dead or inside of a coffin being pulled by its other party members.

yeah, that is unfortunate for him. but at least you have him for three chapters instead of 2~ hours like tabby or the even shorter time like with edward. you have him for about thirty minutes.
but we should look a little bit on the bright side. at least mario can increase his walking speed a bit with spike on the team. you don't need to wear out your finger and button on your controller spinning mario around to move faster.
it is interesting that you picked him as the most useless paper mario party member, nearly everyone says that goombario is the most worthless one in the game and possibly the series.

Seth: Lost Odyssey. She's not really strong at anything in particular outside of just being an Immortal (which is not unique to her). Is a very early party member but as soon as you have the other party members, her usefulness go down very fast and only continues as you get the rest of the party. Anything she can do, there is someone else who excels at it and can take her place in the main party.

This is like a Dragon Ball humor about how Kirilin always dies and he have to be resurrected all the time lolol.

Not gonna repeat what anyone else has said, so I’ll pick Ms. Mowz from Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door.

Optional party member you have to do a quite annoying side quest to do, but doesn’t really bring anything to the table. She’s one of the weakest characters in combat, her only somewhat redeeming ability is that when fully upgraded she gets a move that can heal you. Only problem is that by the time you get the ability to fully upgrade your partners you also have access to better healing items that immediately trump her healing ability, so what would you rather do in a situation where you need healing? Waste 10 FP to heal for a measly 10 HP or use an item and heal for much more. Dumbass character.

Jogurt from Shining Force. He never levels up and all his stats are forever 1 but if he kills an enemy you get a Jogurt ring that makes the wearer look like him so you can have an army of yogurts

I've seen strategies where the little fucker can shed bosses, ¿See how practical the Charge badge is in TTYD? he has it and if you time properly Multibounce can make swiss cheese of strong foes

yeah, that should make him insanely powerful. and it does, but due to the weird ass bug that the game has regarding the multibounce badges, his power can get nerfed through no fault of the player, and if you are really unlucky, it will happen too early for him to dish out that much damage.
i like reading his notes on the various enemies in the game. it's kind of like the piklopedia in pikmin 2. adds quite a bit of world and character building to the game.

Weirdly enough, I like Umaro from FF6 decently enough. He does pretty good damage, and I haven't had to worry about him being the only character left standing... yet.

I find it weird that FF6 has three different flavors of Berserker. Umaro played straight, Mog being unable to do anything but slam-dance once you get him started, and Gau imitating a monster of choice. Of the three, I seem to like Gau the least. He's the only one I didn't take to Kefka's Tower with me, and is underleveled as all get out. Maybe I just like Geomancers enough, which Mog feels like?

Okay to be fair, you're kind of right. hes probably the least useful party member, but if you ask me, hes not worthless or anything. sure hes a lesser ninten when it comes to physical attack, cant use pp, by the end, is the slowest party member in the whole game, but he has some insane battle items. the death beam has been a really clutch item that lets me save on pp lots, and if you stock up on the best item, the flamethrower, you literally have the best attack in the franchise at the catch of gambling the chance for it to break afterwards. plus, that means you dont have to waste hours grinding to get ana to learn it at level 50 something. either way, you select it, and itll work, 100% of the time, at no pp cost whatsoever. thats pretty remarkable if you ask me.

doesn't gau only get abilities from eating monsters?
i haven't gotten very far in the game, but i kind of vaguely remember that.

Yeah he is not bad per se but he is the only bad gaming party member I could think of, although he is bad COMPARED to the rest of the characters

I think he was chasing them, not eating them
