Most useless party member

doesn't gau only get abilities from eating monsters?
i haven't gotten very far in the game, but i kind of vaguely remember that.

Something like that, yeah. You've gotta go on safari at The Veldt, which has every monster you've encountered. Then you have to have Gau use a Leap ability on a monster there. Then you go for another random encounter with beef jerky to re-recruit him. When he rejoins, he'll have the ability set of the monster he leaped on available to him. His Rage ability lets him imitate any set of monster abilities he's chosen.

...and it's a tedious slog to get any of the ability sets, let alone good ones. Probably why I don't bother with the little Tomba wannabe. Or he would be a wannabe if FF6 didn't come out first. But yeah, getting Mog's dances isn't nearly as bad. Umaro just comes with his berserking out of the box, too.

While I absolutely adore the little shit my vote goes to Ponshul

Yeah Gau is practically a blue mage with extra steps

He is like Tarzan who used to learn from other monsters to survive by watching them. So he doesn't "chase" to eat, he goes with them and lives with them until he learns stuff. He may be wild but smartz lol.

yeah, that is the best way to describe the blue mage job: a tedious slog. at least kimahri just needs to use the lancet attack to get a new skill. so, he's the best blue mage in the series then.

Sakura
Nami
Orihime

Oh wait we are talking video games
like every charter you need to transport or drag around the game ><
So Ashley RE4 to name a few

Dog meat from fallout Yes I mean it that dang dog has gotten me killed way to many times.

Peco from Breath of Fire 3 starts at level 1 when you get him which is significantly lower than the rest of your party

Onion knights in ff3, very weak default class but with the onion equipment they become op so kind of?

I hate to say it but Ellie is rather useless in my opinion as a party member not charter until the second game.

Every party member in any FPS games >.<

isn't orihime a white mage? i don't remember much about the show, but i thought she had some healing powers or something.

yeah, i think the onion knight class was meant to be a bit of joke or something. they need to be level 92 to actually get some stats. a level 50 onion knight is equal in stats to a level 1 warrior in the same game.

Heck, Strago in FF6 may be even easier than Kimahri. All he has to do is see the Blue Magic Lore being used by a monster to learn it. As long as he isn't KO'd or whatever, Strago gets the spell at the end of the fight.

but that's how they are supposed to work. gau seems like he has extra steps added on.
quina might be the absolute best one, considering you don't need to ever see the skill being used, just have quina eat the monster.
strago sounds like an infinitely better blue mage just by being a standard one. so i'll make sure to use him over gau when i get around to playing the game again.

Well Orihime is kind of like Sakura starts of just being uselss then they make them bit useful making the healer but if you remove both charters altogether from their anime not much would change more than you did not have to suffer bad charters >.<

Yeah Onion knight was no fun.

I didn't think such companion type NPCs as "party members" but then in this case I would way Grove Street homies in GTA San Andreas as worst party members in existence which I wish at least they were useful in taking territories in Los Santos but nope because they are "destined to lose to the Ballas" damn, so they are only good at taking CJ's pic instead!!! (you can give camera to one of your homie so he takes your pic lolol):

Yeah, Quina is the only blue mage type character where I've actually been somewhat invested in building up to be a usable party member. Usually I ditch those type of characters as soon as I can lol.

Tried playing FF1 on the PPSSPP recently and I noticed that the thief seems pretty useless in it. Usually they are good for traps or stealing items but in FF1, he does neither. What's the point of the class, in FF1?

yeah, i saw some first hand footage of that by seer, who did a whole video on playing through the nes ff3 with just 1 onion knight, no spending money, no jobs and no other party members.
that was just pure torture.

running away. nothing else.

you get quina pretty early on when you only have three characters and you are not far away from an inn, item shop and equipment stores to restock and rest up your party. there's a fair few amount of enemies to test quina's eating ability, which kills the enemies; so, you can test out the new stuff that you got for your other characters and check out the new one that you just got.
in other games, the blue mage job is obtained somewhat into the game, and you most likely already have an idea for your party line up. so it's easy to dismiss the job.

Stealing life...

And the thief was way more useless in the original version but later on they tried to make him useful but it wasn't still "ok" lol. So the thief has relatively higher agility and luck stats. What it means? It's useful to be the person who attacks first, likely to evade attacks and better at running away. However actual deal of the thief is evolving it to a ninja and ninja is very useful and therefore fearsome which is why they banned anything about ninja in the United Kingdom so British people call Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles"!!! Can't touch a ninja but it touches you plenty!!! lol

Kimahri is one of those characters who kind of automatically sucks (purely mechanics-wise, whether you love or hate him as a character isn't part of this. I think he's really cool too) just because in a game where every other character fills a super specific niche by default, but where everyone can become everything, he just sucks because it takes such an insanely long time for you to catch up with the rest of the party, and there's no unique niche for him outside of his Blue Magic which honestly feels really lackluster in FFX to begin with, since the game is so extremely well-designed mechanics wise you never need that "outsmarted the game" factor blue magic usually comes with, until maybe the postgame in which everything is fair game, of course.

It's like he's supposed to be an example of how diverse the (magnificent) sphere grid system is, but by the time you're able to utilize this on Kimahri, the rest have almost maxed out their respective areas and he's stuck feeling like a lesser version of usually Tidus, Aurom or Rikku.

Then in the versions of the game with the Pro Sphere Grid he just becomes even less interesting (unless you REALLY like how he looks) because everyone is in the same spot as him, and that system is already kind of designed with repeat playthroughs in-mind, so unless you want to switch him out with a character you like less, he's more or less just a cool story character, even mechanics-wise.

The Biran and Yenke fight still rocks as a setpiece though, and sucking 'em dry to learn a billion moves will of course always feel good.

Cloud Strife on FF T WOTL! Why? Well, if you acquire him through regular means (no cheats) you’re pretty far off the game and most of your characters are grinded up to your desired/optimized level. On the other hand blonde boy needs to do some (a lot) of grinding for him to be at any use which is a real pain especially for a grind heavy game.

I can think of a few that fit in a couple categories

Ok at first but get outclassed quickly
Raynie in Radiant Historia
The Pokemon Butterfree and Simisear
The Character Dunsparce Specifically in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Gates to Infinity
Gunter in Fire Emblem Fates (Revelation Route)

Bad but don't also drag the rest of the team down:
Forsyth and Atlas in Fire Emblem Echoes
Sharla in Xenoblade Chronicles
Poshul and Guile in Chrono Cross

Active Hindrances that make the game harder
Donald Duck in Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2
The Pokemon Ledian
Sophia in Fire Emblem The Binding Blade

Ronin and Hexer in Etrian Odyssey are the best classes to play, being damage nukes and Status dealer in a saga where those are actaully useful even versus bosses respectivelly... in 2

In Etrian Odyssey 1 they are proggramed with every sucky class tidbit in the book:

BOTH
You unlock them far into the game... in the game with the slowest level gain ever (Not even its EXP cheat is good)
PER CLASS
  1. Ronin need to use a move to change pose, however since the turn you used said move counts as a turn, you wasted one already, that's right, you supposedly has three turns, but in reality you only have TWO
  2. Ronin is frail, and there is no much armor
  3. You unlock him by finding a REALLY OBSCURE PLACE
  4. Hexer lacks poison in this one, meaning the reason you can get rid of mobs is out of the question
  5. There is no LUCK UP stat to raise, so even if you are lucky (IRL) stats won't stick
  6. Her second attractive, binds, are covered by the way superior Dark Hunter
  7. Her Lack of poison means too that the Alchemist outshines them with poison AND the option of elemental weakness dishing
