Monster Hunter Talk

Ranged is really strong this gen.
I think so too, both the bow and both bowguns feel really strong in Wilds. The HBG specifically feels much better to me than in World, where you either went Spread+max shield or weren't really able to do too much (in my experience at least), even if they did remove the melee attack on it. I think they've done a pretty good job balancing the weapons compared to one another by making them all fucking nuts this time around. I managed to chain stun a poor little yian kut-ku for a solid 30 seconds or so using the lances focus attack and charged sweeps, which definitely wasn't happening in World.

I like that seemingly bowguns are more focused this time, that is, each supports less variety of ammo but more strongly supports tue ammo types meant for it. It feels closer to how Gen 4 operated (G/GU first introduced internal mags).

World/Rise BGs weren't all that satisfying to use.

More or less, yeah. Also of note is that you have unlimited spread/pierce and normal ammo now, regardless of the ammo level too. That's a change I think may have gone a little too far personally, but it is what it is.

Ye, the HBG always felt too slow and never had consistent enough damage output to make up for it to me (unless you went the previously mentioned shotgun+shield build). Was a fun weapon though, one of the most satisfying feeling things in World was landing the perfect wyvern round into a monster stun, then cluster bombing the fuck out of them on the ground.
The LBG was meh in World/Rise, it really felt like you were running a normal rapid fire build or nothing else did much damage. I'm greatly enjoying it more in Wilds.

Yeah, I think throwing ammo management out of the window completely was ridiculous.

What always bothered me the most about Gen 5 LBG is that they didn't make a second special ammo type for them, while HBG has two types. Feels super lazy to me.

Since we have a bunch of people who play, I've thrown together a Squad in Wilds; you can find it with the code BE99M5CJ. (Squads -> Join New -> ID Search.)You can easily join lobbies of people who are in your Squad, and can also filter by them when you're looking for quests to join, so it makes it easy to join in with people, pretty much the only actually good thing about the lobby implementation in this game.
If you want to add me directly, my ID is PR7SA7VU. If I'm around and free I'm pretty much always happy to pop on and help out. (You can do this by going to the Members List and tabbing all the way to the far right for 'Hunter ID Search'.)
I'll add my deets for Rise and GU when I boot those games up next time too.

Wanted to bring this thread back, so I'll ask a few rapid fire questions to you all!

Do you have a favorite village/hub area in the series? If so, why is that one your favorite?

Additionally, seeing as the series went through quite a few changes with the latest generations, what are your thoughts on the QoL features in the modern games when compared to something like MHFU or MHGU?

Plus, how have you all been enjoying Wilds now that it's been about two months since its launch?

I'm asking these from the perspective of a Rise player who has been taking their time in enjoying the post-game content, but have not yet played the other games extensively at the moment!

All right, I'll give my input.
My favorite village is Bherna from Gen/U; I like the cozy mountain setting and the idyllic vibe of the place. My favorite hub is probably the P3rd one because it's very compact, while still looking stylish and having great music.

As far as modernizations go, I thought the reduced focus on preparation made things a little diluted. I know why they did it, but I still liked to put actual thought on inventory and such. I also don't like the ability to enter tents and just resupply basically for free (I self impose not using that).

On the positive side, selectable auto crafting saves a lot of time.

As for Wilds, it's mostly very good (sans performance) and I enjoy it far more than I did vanilla World (I play World with ICE now), but I feel some things were simplified to the point of absurdity - mostly how Bowguns are handled.

The biggest positive Wilds introduced IMO was moving offensive skill to weapons; it should always have been that way.

Edit: to further clarify with bowguns: infinite ammo is going too far. That said, I don't enjoy using bowguns in any game past GU.

P3rd's hub looks beautiful, and made even better by the shaders and upscaling available through emulation.

I wasn't aware of this change; that sounds great!

Is the performance any better than it was at launch, at least? I remember hearing criticisms about performance earlier, with the game being compared to Dragons Dogma 2 at the time.

Your edit caught exactly what I was going to ask next! I'm not too big on bowguns from what I've tried in Rise, as my playstyle has started to orient itself towards normal bows, which I'm more biased towards as a long range weapon, and great sword. I also used long sword earlier too, which is really fun. The amount of weapons on offer is still staggering to me, if I'm being honest. I've barely scratched the surface of the other weapons on offer.

Wilds' performance certainly improved, but there's still room for more improvement. My hope is that TUs will introduce solutions, not more problems.

Yeah bowguns felt oddly unsatisfying to use after 4U and Gen/U. They are easier, but the shots don't feel good to land.

Hopefully I didn't spoil anything mentioning the skill system change in Wilds, I'm sorry if so.

No worries! I tend to live under a rock sometimes when it comes to modern releases that aren't fighters. I'm more likely to go backwards in release order rather than forwards for quite some time, as the early MH games are packed with content that I haven't seen yet - the system change is something I'm looking forward to!

And to be perfectly honest? I still prefer the oldies, there, I said it LOL.
Don't blame ya! I share that sentiment across the whole game industry, really. Even my beloved Capcom fighters are not safe in that regard, haha.

In the case of MH, GU in particular looks super varied and interesting with the style options.

I have a feeling we are on the same wavelength on this too. The last Street Fighter I enjoyed was 4, and I don't like the fact Capcom all but abandoned Darkstalkers and Cyberbots.

GU definitely has a metric ton of everything awesome. For one there are very few monsters missing from the roster (it's an anniversary title) and then there's all the cool mechanics only it has. Borrowing from Street Fighter, GU is Monster Hunter 4 Turbo, LOL

Absolutely. I only liked 5 a little bit with the release of Urien and G, but even they couldn't save the crush counter gameplay. 6 is a step in the right direction, albeit I will always prefer the fast supers of SF3 and before. The game is plagued with throw loops right now, too, which has made the game feel stale on both the winning and losing end.

4 is my second favorite SF, only limited by my extreme bias towards the parry system of 3 (and Urien, of course ::winkfelix) but SF4 still was something special. The player expression from SF4 is still the best the series has seen to this day. It's a shame that Elena ended USF4 being so dominant, as the game was otherwise pretty well balanced. Would've loved to see more characters in that engine.

Darkstalkers/VSav makes me very upset over its abandonment. That roster and gameplay deserved better. Cyberbots also deserved something more. At least Morrigan will remain relevant as costumes! Yay.

I'm glad that Monster Hunter still has its core game intact, at least. The same can't be said for modern Final Fantasy. But a different topic for a different day on that one.

Oh, yeah, FF is all but gone (also another I don't play past a specific release, namely 12).
That said, I agree, MH has been doing better than most franchises in regards to keeping the general framework intact.

If any of you have problem with Wilds I recommend installing REFramework. I couldn't even launch the game before that (my computer isn't weak or anything) but after REFramework I can get to the main menu. I haven't played atm because I'm busy tho
