Mesen 2.0

Honestly until the desktop experience matches the mobile one in quality and ease, I can't recommend Retroarch in good conscience to anyone.
Honestly the problem with retroarch could all be fixed if they just gave the desktop frontend all of the options in a drop down menu, i can use retroarch but its such a pain in the ass.

You mean Retroarch on phones? it's the same as the desktop but with a different default menu driver
What I mean is that the overall construction of the GUI that drives the UX is clearly mobile driven. Works well in this environment, but terribly in a desktop environment, IMO.

I recommend using rgui as a menu driver, It's actually quite comfortable to use compared to the others (especially the ps3-like xmb)

Also, if you like the mobile interface you can you use it on desktop if you want, you just need to go to drivers<menu<glui

It's actually more designed around HTPC's and stuff like the steam deck aka 100% controller controlled aka the "console experience", but i get your point.

Yeah I suppose RGUI is closer to a menu experience of something like ZSNES and such, which is preferable to the default. Still, core settings management and control remapping has always been needlessly painful. The fact Retroarch abides by some sort of meta controller map is just a needless complication.

I love Mesen a lot but I'm curious about one thing: will it ever support Genesis someday? I'm not even asking for Sega CD nor 32-X (although if it can run PC Engine CD games then this won't be too difficult on paper).

Another wish would be support for the NeoGeo Pocket (Colour) that would go well next to the WonderSwan since emulators for both are scarce.

I'm very thankful this emulator exists.

The dev was working on genesis support but we have no more information on this. He kinda disappeared

I wish someone made a fork of it with retroachivements support

I used to have an aversion against multi-hardware emulators yet I loved its PC Engine CD support better than Ares.
Same, though if i'm being honest it was less a aversion to them and more of a ease of use issue, most multi-system emulators were a pita to get working right, then mesen shows up and shows everyone how it's done.

I've played Ys I&II PC Engine CD on Mednafen but the lack of a proper UI made it harder than needed.

Also I assumed that multi system meant not entirely accurate or less accurate/faithful to the hardware than dedicated ones.

Digressions aside I think Mesen is my main way to play NES games even over FCEUX.

Mednafen was a pain, but it was even worse before, where the only real way to play pce-cd games was magic engine, a emu you had to pay for (or pirate).
It's kinda funny now that i think about it, at one time neo geo and pc engine were nearly unplayable while there were a ton of genesis and snes emulators, now the problems mainly lie with genesis emulation if you don't like retroarch.

While I don't mind people getting paid for their work I think it's a bit useless to sell it since most want to use them so they don't have to spend money. At least we have more options now.

I'm a bit out of the loop, what happened? Most are Libretros nowadays? Kega and SNES9X are still fine to me but they're quite old now.

Kega fusion is the only genesis emulator that "just works", ares is more compatible but has problems with shaders and it's cheat system, jgenesis is a up and coming emu that will eventually bypass fusion provided it doesn't crash and burn but it lacks both shader and cheat support currently.

The problem with kega is mostly the fact it's not accurate, it's functional, which is fine but can cause some weird issues in emulation, especially in sega cd games, otherwise the emulator needs some tricks to work perfectly on modern windows, think it's fine on linux though (haven't tried it yet).

As such only retroarch libreto cores function perfectly, which is fine if retroarch doesn't annoy you like it does me.

It would be awesome if Mesen DID get Genesis functionality, but I hope that JGenesis gets some more features. My biggest gripe is trying to change between 3 button and 6 button games and having to remap the controller.

Agreed, even in Kega you had to swap between controller types each time you load a game.
