Mesen 2.0

Personally I used Mesen as my De Facto PC Engine CD emulator but I enjoyed playing NES/SNES/GB on it.

I wish it supported the Genesis though.

Only thing is, my ROM folders are separated by console in a way that navigating to a different console is a bit tedious in file explorer.
Ditto haha!

Di-ditto!
My hierarchy is Company > Console > Game
I personally have one folder per console because I don't really care about the company, I see Dreamcast, Dual Screen and so on.

Unless I decide to make an arborescence with all consoles from Gen 1 to Gen 7 and then I'll probably have a dedicated Xbox and PlayStation folder with model sub-folders because some companies only made one hardware.

Inside each game folder I have subfolders for hacks and translation patches too, all named differently to avoid save game overwriting. I still consider companies to be useful identifiers, so I keep them at the top level. Having something like

Nintendo (top level)
  • NES
  • SNES
  • NDS
  • 3DS
  • Game Cube
  • Wii

just makes sense in my mind.

Edit: I can't maintain my beautiful formatting, but you get the idea.
Ah right, I use the romhack name over the rom's name.

Like Kirby's Adventure DX.

Anyway I'm maybe just being a bit messy as I go with my feel haha!

I do wish Windows 10-11 made you rearrange icons as you see fit but I cannot find that option anymore like on XP and Seven.
Honestly, Windows is just so sterile when it comes to user empowerment and feel. I'm helping a friend set up a Linux machine (he decided to jump to Zorin OS after his Win 10 installation basically imploded) and it's crazy how sleek, light and customizable everything is.

Running windows stuff takes some doing and isn't guaranteed, but if it were? MS would go under.

Windows is also being even more "childish" (like the blue screen no longer telling the exact issue but puts a smiley as if you were a kid... I want the 0x00000c area for the fatal error or what type of null something it was, not giving me a sad face) and stripped so many features out of the customers.

I almost miss the professionalism looking old Win9x...

I liked XP a lot, it was clean and to the point. Lightweight too.

Oh if only it supported genesis/CD/32x games, then we'd finally have a emulator that supersedes kega fusion.

One of the best parts of linux for me is how customizable it is, which of course also means potentially making it look like windows 98.

If you have any GUI recommendations I'd love to hear it. My friend is currently running the Zorin default (I think it's GNOME?).

GUI?
Oh you mean desktop environment.
Generally speaking the one most similar to windows would be KDE, just don't mess with global themes too much (had that corrupt the DE and in general it's pretty stable.
Others that are like windows are cinnamon, xfce and if you really want to avoid modern MATE, but kde is probably the most customizable and similar to windows.

Got it! hopefully trying these things is non destructive.

Just get a distro, say manjaro, that offers a kde desktop version, put it on a flash drive, and try the desktop environment that way, don't install extras unless you need them.

Ah, if only Windows had that kind of freedom.

Yeah live cd's (funny considering it's a flash drive) are nice, they let you test out linux os's without having to install them first, makes things simpler.

It will be a full win. All of the major 8 and 16 bits consoles in it.

Shame that Microsoft didn't let a "legacy skin pack" replicating all previous Windows UIs...

Yeah but more than that, we'd have a viable alternative to kega fusion, i love kega fusion but it's definitely showing it's age.
As for microsoft, well let me be clear, one of the reasons i dropped windows was due to microsoft's tendency to try to force you to submit to their wishes for the os, to the point of locking down customization.
Why bother with burning CDs when you can just use DistroSea and run them off someone else's computer in your browser?
Well live cd's make it easier to install it if you like it, though i also forgot distrosea existed, mainly because i found it slow when i tried it.

Hm. Hmmmmm! Hm.

I don't know how much I like the idea of immediately and abruptly expanding this emulator to cover a whole bunch of different systems at once. Mesen is already a really, really good NES emulator (definitely mine of choice for the NES) – why did they feel they needed to expand? Why did they have to bundle all of these other emulators into one? And they're doing... SNES games? SMS/GG games? Gameboy games!? Are these paths not already tread by every other emulator on the bloody planet? What are they looking to achieve, here?

Seriously: Am I missing something? Why would they do this? The other systems definitely aren't going to be as good as, say Kega Fusion (which had over a decade of continuous development, and that still only does 16- + 8-bit consoles from one company). Why would I want my very good NES emulator to suddenly become a sub-par multi-core system? Isn't this going to make the file size go insane?

Well... in any case, I hope they don't F it all up. Mesen really, really is an awesome NES emulator. That's kind of all I need from it, guys.
Mesen is also one of the best SNES emulators.

Today I discovered that Mesen, the "super inter pares" NES emulator, is expanding by introducing new supported systems.

Currently in 2.0:
  • NES
  • SNES
  • Game Boy (Color)
  • Game Boy Advance
  • PC Engine
  • SMS/Game Gear
  • WonderSwan (Color)
It’s especially useful because of the filter settings. With a single emulator, you can apply the graphical configurations you need for sprite-based games, and they’ll carry over seamlessly from one console to another.

And, of course, you can replace various emulators like bsnes, mGBA, etc., all in one go.

I'm not sure about accuracy - This emu was famous for its accuracy with NES, but I don't know about the other systems. I tried an hacked version of NTSC-J Metroid Fusion and it seems to be working correctly
Accuracy-wise Mesen is known to be the best Nes emulator but honestly Retroarch with the Mesen core is better
