It's the same as what happened with that Virgin vs Chad meme.
In its infancy, it just used to describe a relatively normal person vs an insanely outrageously absurdly confident person, but naturally insecure assholes got hold of it and strongarmed a relatively innocent meme into meaning "you vs me" and taking it super seriously.
Probably because they saw the word virgin and felt personally attacked.
Everyone just turns silly outrageous caricatures into strawmen to win arguments nowadays.
