Mega Man Megathread

If you don't want people giving their opinions in response to yours, stop posting on a forum.
I stated my opinion and you responded as if it was directed toward you. I'd say it in your AMA thread if I wanted your negative take on something I value.

Mega Man 7 and 8 are where it's at with the art style. Real shame there's only Mega Man Soccer in 7's art style
Soccer is not the same art style as 7.

No, I responded to it like it was a post on a forum thread where everybody can respond to everybody else as long as it's within the rules, which it was.

Really don't care that 9 and 10 removed the charged shot and slide for Mega Man that much since the games were designed around that anyways. But 9 removing weapon switching with the shoulder buttons was really unnecessary and dumb.

For someone who doesn't have time to read the whole thread, sell megaman to me and which is the best game to try for someone who has never played any of them. If you wish, it's not a demand or anything. I'll happily be oblivious to it.

Hahahaha no.
Learn about the series' history and discover a good game through effort, trial, error, and (perhaps) potentially success.

Try the Megaman X series, hard to go wrong there.

Just pick one that looks the most interesting to you and play it.

Also, Mega Man X1 and X2 are the only good MMX titles.

Megaman X1 and X2 are the only good titles? The worst part about this is leaving out X4. But also X3 and X5 are great games.
Is it because from X3 onwards they introduced Zero being playable?.... And that a certain other robot was merely his prototype?...

The above responses are a good example of why you need to just have a look for yourself! Maybe watch a brief retrospective or short clips of gameplay and see what appeals to you.
I'd personally recommend
X1 - X5 (especially X4)
Megaman Zero series (even better if you have at least a rough idea of the story for X series)
Megaman Legends (probably my favourite game of all time)
Megaman 7 and 8

There's so much more though like battle network, so check things out and see what you like.

I mean aside from the Z Buster in 1, the roaming X Hunters in 2, and some optional boss gimmicks and the armor chips in 3, the series doesn't start punishing you for walking unprepared into problems you had no prior knowledge of, passing undisclosed cutoff points, and your general collection habits until 5 or 6.

Is it weird to prefer the battle network series to the original megaman style? I've only played 1 and 2 of proper megaman and enjoyed them enough, but I first saw battle network's combat style used in a Newgrounds animation and I was immediately like "I need to find out what that is!" Been hooked since.

If I'm going to try and play some of the other megaman games in the franchise, should I carry on and play 3 or skip to X1? Everyone seems to suggest that the X series goes hard from what I've seen online.

You really don't need to have played the classic series to properly enjoy X. It's an indirect sequel, as the latest entries in the classic series don't necessarily rationally lead into the X series. A great many decades have passed, and Mega Man X is a later creation of the late Dr Light and a different protagonist. The wider range of movement and combat abilities may ruin the classic series for you should you later decide to return to it, though.

I'm tempted to try and blitz through some of the older MegaMan titles before I try out X. I've had the issue of trying to return to clunkier titles before and I did always plan on carrying on those classic games after enjoying the first two.

I'm gonna consider installing the entire classic series on my vita or something and see how I get on. Pretty sure I picked up a collection on GOG at some point.

It's worth noting that there are "modern" classic series titles; 7 has an updated art style on SNES, and the most recent I'm aware of is a firmly post-Wii U Switch release with 3D character and environment models to go with the series' usual 2D side scrolling vertical plane gameplay.

Do y'all think that Dr Cossack having created Bass's software, per the Battle Network series, is also canon to the classic timeline in which robotics took precedence over networking as the focus of human technological progress? Bass.EXE is basically older than the internet, and that would suggest that he may have existed before the timeline split.

No, it's because X3 and onwards are mid-to-trash. Zero being playable is a coincidence.

Now that's an interesting idea! Although, if this is the idea, Dr. Wily must've stolen the software code from Dr. Cossack or something along those lines. After MM4, I doubt that Dr. Cossack would willingly help Dr. Wily in anything.

I don't think that's all that inconsistent with Wily's character nor his established relationship with Bass.

No, he isn't. Mega Man was inspired by the Japanese pop culture, which has nothing to do with Carlo Collodi.
Still checks out indirectly, since Astro Boy wouldn’t have existed if it weren’t for Pinocchio, and Megaman wouldn’t have existed if it weren’t for Astro Boy.

You don’t need to be so matter-of-fact just by an innocuous post.

Robots existed in SF since 1920's, at least. Pinocchio has jack squat to do with that.

No he isn't??? They have zero similarities beyond being artificially created non-human boys.
They are both artificial humans, they’re both stand-ins for sons, they both want to have real human emotions, hell they both join the circus and get treated like shit. It’s the literal first Astro Boy comic.

Why are you always so seemingly angry and confrontational when people want to talk about Megaman stuff that’s not part of your exact frame of reference? Relax.

I think they might both carry the disdain of their fathers for failing to meet expectations. Granted, I last read about the original Pinocchio in passing a good long while ago and have never meaningfully consumed either source material.

On a Mega Man/Astro Boy tangent, it's surprising that they didn't do the "the main character is a replacement for his father's dead son" thing sooner than Battle Network.

I know you may not believe me, but I'm genuinely calm. Just because I'm straightforward with my words and opinions doesn't mean I'm angry.

Anyway, I actually really like MM11's art style. It modernizes character designs without taking away the simpleness that made them so iconic. My second biggest grievance with Bass' absence in the game, after the fact itself, is that we'll likely never see the official MM11-style rendition of him.
