Mega Man Megathread

If someone would consider X6-8 a separate canon, we may as well consider every Megaman ever to be a separate continuity

BTW, it's Mega Man & Bass' 27th anniversary today!

Zero series was conceved wih the idea of X5 being the end of the X series.
Inafune did not know that X6 was being worked on during this time.
Hence the inconcistencies of Zero going into sleep and getting cloned, the rampant viruses and timelines conflicting with elf wars.
Also if X6-8 was inline with everything else, there's no mention of something as massive of an event such as Jakob's ladder in Zero, ZX or even Legends.

Mega Man world seriese also has an encounter with Quint.
A Mega Man from an alternate timeline that was kidnaped and reprogramed by Wily.

Somehow none of this or the Mefa Man killers are ever mentioned or brought up.

It's not mentioned or brought up because Capcom sucks at consistency.

Also, you included Super Adventure Rockman and didn't mention it being non-canon.

I'll give you that, I know nothing of Adventure, but looking into it, seems to not conflict with the canon too much, and I think that Ra Moon might have also been referenced in some of the main games to some degree but I can't recall too well.

Nothing from SAR has ever been acknowledged or referenced by other games. Please stop passing off your headcanons and conjecture as an actual canon.

Your right, I was misremembering the shadow devil in X5 as Ra Moon. My bad.

I would recommend following release order.
You'll learn more about the lore in the same manner as most of everyone who's played.
But lore wise, my recommended order:

Classic 1-8
& Forte - Forte Mirai
Power Battle & Power Fighters
Adventure
Classic 9 - 11
X 1-3
Xtreme 1-2
X 4-5
Zero 1-4
ZX & Advent
Legends 1-2
Misadventures of Tron Bonne

X 6-8 ( separate continuity )
Command Mission

GB World games ( separate continuity )

Alternate Timeline:
Battle Network 1-3
Network Transmission
EXE Wonderswan
Battle Chip Challenge
EXE Battle Chip Stadium
Battle Network 4-6
Star Force 1-3
EXE Operation Shooting Srar

Re-imagining:
Powered Up
Maverick Hunter X

Elder God Tier:
Panic Shot
DOS games
Wily & Light Rockboard
Soccer
Battle & Chase
Pachislot
Mobile Java exclusive games ( between this and DOS I don't know which is worst )
Gold Empire ( jesus wept )
Strategy ( might be better than Gold Empire, I sure as hell won't find out )
Xover
X Dive
The grouping here makes a lot of sense.

I group the games similarly in my head but my only change would be:
I'd split Megaman classic same way you did X series
MM 1-6
MM 7,8, then MM&Bass

Also I'd keep X6 grouped with the first two so X4-X6, although I do understand why you removed it, they're literally the same sprites/ gameplay / generation.

Finally I recommend to just pick whatever group you like the look of and start there. Playing from start to finish in order of release might feel like a chore. Chop and change but just keep to the sequential order within each group. So you could start with X4 (my first Megaman game!), then Legends 1, X1, Megaman 1, X2, X5, Legends 2, Zero 1, X6, Zero2 and so on... I hope it makes sense

Mega Man noob here with a question:
Only beaten OG 2 and X. I have X2 ready and wanna go through those because I liked X a lot. Replayed X recently and I had a rough memory of the boss order and most extras going in from trying it years ago. So I was well equipped for the game. But X2 and beyond, totally blind. In my experience, playing these games blind is a fuckin' chore. Really these games are just a knowledge check. It's super easy if you know the weakness' and stuff, but ridiculously uptight if you don't. Since I hate looking up walkthroughs, that's why I've never given these games much of a chance.

So do I start X2 with a boss order and bonuses guide ready and just follow the intructions. Or should I just learn the hard way. Never played the other SNES games so are they better than the NES ones for a blind playthrough or is it just not worth the trouble? I'm just tryina have fun and wanna know if the annoyance of googling where to go is/isn't gonna outweigh the annoyance of getting cooked 100 times and having to replay levels over and over.

Sounds like somebody's having skill issues. /j

But seriously, play however you want. Mega Man games are flexible like that.

Uh-uh. The levels are the easiest part. Really it's a patience issue. I hate dying and "Welp, gotta do all that shit all over again." I know old game design but like, ffs y'know.

If you are playing on the SNES, I think it's worth it looking up their weaknesses if you are stuck on a boss and don't want to deal with redoing the levels. But If you are using emulation, using save states is the way to go.

Mega man games are indeed really hard, and I think it's almost impossible killing a boss blindly on first try without their weakness. Damn sometimes even with their weakness I still die a lot lol

Using save states only on the password screen to keep it legit. I've sunk some time into X2 now and man... It's fun but like, so many of the extras are a pain in the ass to get for no reason. The stages are fine (except Magna Centipede, fuck me). But some bosses are just outrageous without the weakness. Basically all the same issues I have with every Mega Man.

This one really goes in to make the Health-Ups, Sub Tanks and Armour Upgrades a bitch to collect. It's so not fun but I know I'm gonna need them. Had to look up where they all are of course but I did the bosses all myself at least. I don't recommend it. But googling them is so lame too so like, whatever. These games are lame.

Why are you forcing yourself to play the games if you're not enjoying them?

It's not like it's Megaman Zero 🤣

Personally I still gotta finish playing through Megaman CX and Rockman 7 EP.

Been on my backlog for too long now

That's a, good point XD Because it's nnnearly really good. The visuals, the music, the boss designs, the controls. It's all hits no misses. but the core gameplay being designed around finding stuff out by dying really irks me. I wanna like it but a feedback loop of constantly losing puts a huge debuff on the enjoyability. Basically I'm tryina get over myself and get better at rolling with the punches. L exposure therapy I guess.

It's got a lot to whine about, but that's after all due respect is given. It's at least captivating and fun enough to make me want to enjoy it and finish it. A second playthrough after learning the ropes I'm sure will be a lot smoother. I'd say it shouldn't really be that way, but it is what it is.

It's okay to admit a game is not for you, even if it's good.

If you are feeling too frustrated with the game, it's good to take a break for a while and come back later to clean your mind a little. Sometimes the frustration you feel at the moment kinda maker everything even harder. I had to take some looong breaks with X2. Specially with Flame Stag stage and fight, without his weakness you are absolutely cooked.

Luckily I had his weakness on hand and was able to beat him first try. For me it was the Magnet Moth. Had to come back like 3 times before I had what I needed. Playing without it though, I could get through the magnet stage, but then second phase. I got no idea what you do. Damage boost with the flame upgrade is all I can say. Also shoutout to whoever chose to make the exit stage button not work in most areas in the game, anywhere you'd want to use it. I get it for boss fights I guess but the hallway before, why not? Little things like that man.
