Mega Man Megathread

Is that X8 "demake" any good?

What about Command Mission?
I've not played Demake but I have played the original X8 and I actually love that game. It controls and plays well, but you can't ignore the fact that a majority of its levels are auto scrollers with minimal level design. It has like 5 actual levels.

As for Command Mission... I simply dropped it. I got about to chapter 7. I think the characters are alright but the plot is not too exciting. It's like the other characters have 1 moment to shine and that's it. It also doesn't help that Command Mission is set in a different X continuity. Gameplay wise for an RPG is mixed. You don't have traditional ways of healing yourself but instead rely on a subtank like in the X games which is awkward to function with. I think you should give it a try yourself.

From what I know, it definitely is, many levels had some major overhauls if you compare them to the original game counterparts and that's the biggest deal for me in a 2D platformer, at least half of them got completely rebuilt with better layouts and mechanics that reward skill and play exactly how MMX should and not too many gimmicks that don't compliment the core gameplay loop. (Just compare the Burning Rooster level side by side and you'll get it, it's night and day)

Now Command Mission is a funny one, I would like to try it and see for myself why it's so obscure, a MMX turn-based RPG just sounds so out of the box.

Which Mega Man protagonist does the phrase "good boy" describe best?

Not sure if he counts as "protagonist" but I'd definitely say Rush.

I kinda like his Japanese name Rockman but is this kind of name popular among Japanese for their fictional characters? I mean there's also Rock Howard in Fatal Fury/Garou MotW/KoF and the recurring character Rock from Tezuka's work.

I know that English sounding names are probably cool for a Japanese audience but why that one in particular?

It could also be a coincidence.

Considering how they got inspired by Atom/Astro Boy it may as well as it may not, knowing how far-fetched some japanese could be for naming or references.

On the other hand I'd be curious to know where the "-man" naming came from for hero names. I know that Superman was one of the earlier exemples but I feel like it may be just a simple way to name characters (like Mario being known as Jumpman before simply because his main gimmick was jumping).

Gamefreaks ripped off Megaman for their game Pulseman?

It would be a nice reference if they agreed to let Capcom borrow the character in a spinoff. But like Bombman not being allowed to be called Bomberman I can see that they wanna protect their character.

I might just skip straight to the X series. I tried out 3 and 4 and did not enjoy myself all that much lol

Is X gonna be worth my time or are they very similar to the original series?

Only X1 and X2 and maybe Command Mission. The rest are crap.

Well, for Rockman in particular, it's a themed name. Dr Light's humanoid robot assistants are called Rock and Roll, after all.

Then Roll makes no sense in English? They could've gone with something like "Hypergirl" or something like that.

They should have just kept Rock as his name in casual settings. Hell, they should retroactively change the localization of the whole series. And let me tell you, the problem is even worse listening to the dialogue in legends.

By the way, before I understood that Rockman was his original Japanese name I was wondering why I read that name but couldn't find any stone themed robot master.

To append to this, calling Rock Volnutt Mega Man the whole time ruins the game's biggest plot twist, much like the dated meme-infested abomination of a Nagatoro English dub ruins the setup for a major moment of relationship development by making her "first" name a known constant that's incessantly uttered in front of the male protagonist. It's even worse that the localizers of the manual or some other supplemental materials added nonsense lore about how grandpa let Roll name the boy he found in the ruins after a comic book hero.

The NES games can be skipped if you're not enjoying them. Try:
7 on SNES
8 on PS1
X1 to X3 on SNES
X4 to X6 on PS1
Mega Man Zero 1 to 4

Try for yourself and see what you like, I've grouped them into categories that are similar

It's absolutely worth it, at least X1 to X4 + Maverick Hunter X (remake of the first one), X5 onwards is hit or miss.

You forgot Rockman & Forte

Oh damn, thanks- yes indeed. Oversight rather that intentional - definitely worth playing especially if you like 7 or 8. And stick to the original SNES version. GBA version is abysmal.
