Ward is not an additional cost needed to cast, it is a triggered ability. You CAN cast a spell on something with ward then choose not pay the cost.
But yea, I was wrong that ward would trigger if you countered your own octavia, I glanced over the fact your opponent needs to control the spell (also it needs to be on battlefield as a permanent) >_< I thought it was a pretty bomb combo because: play octavia for UU (play a deck to fill the yard) then counter it, so you get 10 1/1 flyers AND octavia (not choosing to pay ward cost) in play for 7 mana

I love cool interactions like that, but yea it doesn't work as I thought because I don't read so good
But regardless, you CAN counter your own octavia and get 10 1/1 flyers if you wanted (for 7 mana, that's still not too bad): that's a lot of blockers and damage in the air. But octavia will go to command zone because it was countered. But just re-cast octavia next turn with the commander tax?
