Magic: The Gathering [It's a Thread!]

I'm so old and out of touch with MTG, this little freak was my MVP back during the ice age. (But not MTG Ice Age, because that was Necropotence).

I didn't play extended when psychatog was a thing, but yea, that is a scary atog O_o
*i remember a really nasty combo with this one and "upheaval"(?)*
Yea, upheaval has crazy synergy with psychatog. I believe the strategy was to float mana, play or replay psychatog on your upheaval turn, then you have a full hand and graveyard (after discard) to beat down with and your opponent has nothing.

For those not sure sure why psychatog was good, check this out.
Unfortunately, I think dr. teeth has been retired because tarmogoyf does the job better ::sadkirby

I'm actually curious how to play the psychatog mirror though back the the day. I guess @ATenderLad you have experience with that?

Might be my favorite enchantment art card
My favorite enchantment art ( ::heart Rebecca Guay ) is enchanted evening. It also might be my favorite card EVER: love the art (and the general "storybook" fantasy art direction of lorwyn), flavor and is the only standard constructed deck I played with. I could only afford to build a fringe combo deck I randomly came across online, and I happened to already have a bunch of the cards ^_^ But yea, didn't do well against the established standard decks ::sadkirby It was still fun though.

For those curious, the combo is to then cast this for free
fut-29-patrician-s-scorn.jpg

Which blows up everything, but you run persist creatures and heartmender which removes -1/-1 counters. So you end up with 5+ power against an empty board.

You can also end the game in a Draw if you play this one with Enchanted Evening on the board. Basically, everything is an enchantment. If you play a permanent, it makes a cat, which is an enchantment so it makes a cat, which is an enchantment....if no one has split second, it makes cats for Eternity and ends the game because the stack never resolves.

This next one is also a bomb for enchanted evening. tranquil-grove-142-3115684908.jpg
There's also Cleansing Meditation which is one-sided if you have threshold. Most importantly, it specifies cards destroyed, not enchantments.

Octavia is one of my simpler commanders, but she does a pretty damn good job. Make a shit ton of tokens with access denied, tap down your opponents board with gigadrowse, and smack em down with a few beefed up thopters.

That is some high level cheese. I ::heart it :3

A little slow, imo. I like to use 2 drops for ramp/disruption/draw in a combo deck. But yea, that is awesome synergy.

::omgdoom That is nuts with enchanted evening. You don't even need the persist creatures at that point, there is probably a deck that can crazy abuse that. But the power of the lorwyn standard deck was to "go off" on turn 5, and there was no fast mana in that format. Cleansing meditation + enchanted evening = 8 mana on one turn and in the old formats there are probably much faster combo decks ::sadkirby

I use it in my Estrid deck. I run a ton of land enchantments, so she's able to untap the lands I use for enchanted evening. Also Mirari's Wake is in the deck along with Chain Veil.

POST YOUR FAVORITE EXPANSION AND WHY HAS THE SERIES PEAKED WITH ICE AGE?
I started playing around Return to Ravnica. My bf and I at the time got the Izzet vs Golgari Duel decks, I picked Izzet, he picked Golgari.

I'm super obsessed with Ravnica. I even have a D&D artificer who is an Izzet Engineer. :3

Oh wow, that is gas, took me a second to understand. So you counter your own octavia which fizzles because of ward, but you still get the tokens AND octavia. I guess you run a bunch of draw/discard to fill the yard fast?

Nooo. You have Octavia on board and counter a 5+cmc spell.

Ward makes it an additional cost. You can't cast the spell without paying that

Ward is not an additional cost needed to cast, it is a triggered ability. You CAN cast a spell on something with ward then choose not pay the cost.

But yea, I was wrong that ward would trigger if you countered your own octavia, I glanced over the fact your opponent needs to control the spell (also it needs to be on battlefield as a permanent) >_< I thought it was a pretty bomb combo because: play octavia for UU (play a deck to fill the yard) then counter it, so you get 10 1/1 flyers AND octavia (not choosing to pay ward cost) in play for 7 mana ::omgdoom I love cool interactions like that, but yea it doesn't work as I thought because I don't read so good ::sadkirby

But regardless, you CAN counter your own octavia and get 10 1/1 flyers if you wanted (for 7 mana, that's still not too bad): that's a lot of blockers and damage in the air. But octavia will go to command zone because it was countered. But just re-cast octavia next turn with the commander tax?

Holy shit. Usually I just wait until someone plays a high cmc spell

Here's a pretty classic combo I used to run. Basically, you trigger Niv just once, and he goes infinite with Curiosity as long as you don't deck yourself. Risky in commander since the board will typically have 120 Life you need to deal with, and your deck only has 99 cards. It's a good way to finish off that last opponent.

Well now you don't need to wait for lots of tokens ^_^ You can still hold on to it to counter something big from opponents, but yea, if no one is playing anything big and it is dead in your hand, I think it is a pretty sweet play. Also, you can counter a big uncountarable spell and still get the tokens. The only way to not get the tokens is if Access Denied itself is countered or removed from the stack in some way.
don't care what people say i love this card even if it is crap.View attachment 82648
That's some great art! Perfect for the card ::heart That might be my favorite art for any of the "leviathan" type blue monsters.
This art looks like Darkroot Garden with those Knights in Dark Souls 1.
The modern art fogs also look pretty good too, but that is a case where I liked the old art more so posted that one: I like how the figures are more shrouded. I have no idea what the thought process was on the mirage art: the fog looks like soft serve ice cream to me >_< and so it kind of looks goofy to me. But maybe others don't see it that way...

I play MTG casually. Usually, on Areana. I was super hyped for the Final Fantasy sets, so I bought a commander deck and the booster box to build a few standard decks. I’ve been meaning to scope out some the events at my LGS, but i get super shy.

Went to my local store in the city and the Final Fantasy boosters and sets were 100% sold out ::angrygenjinApparently everyone is having trouble keeping them in stock. Guess it's good that it's a success, though.

Curious but how do longtime MTG fans feel about the possible influx of players who just got into it recently with the FF tie-in? Or is that a usual occurrence whenever MTG does one of these big franchise tie-ins? I've been MTG-curious for a while and want to give it a shot myself (maybe when I eventually get my hands one of these dang FF starter decks).
