Magic: The Gathering [It's a Thread!]

Im talking about automatic simulators
As far as I know no, nothing exists. If you're interested at all, it's a little confusing at first, but the PSP has a homebrew game called Wajic the Homebrew. Its MTG on the PSP. Its a cool thing to mess around with for a bit but its not something you can really play for too long. And obviously its all NPC matches.

Maybe the 1997 PC game would be up your alley? Look up Magic the Gathering Shandalar by Microprose. It's single player and it has old cards obviously but it should be a decent introduction to the card game.

What do you guys think about this AI uproar? Doesn't seem to be much proof but the "artists" portfolio of AI generated images seems to be 1:1 with this piece so it most likely is. Even if not, its really unfortunate that Wizards even decided to let someone who's known for AI generated images work on their cards. Sucks either way.

WotC has been caught a couple of times using AI art in promotional material and it honestly wouldn't surprise me if some cards actually use AI art.

I really want all the Final Fantasy cards for this, they're awesome. I'd probably learn this game and play it a bunch.

yay! mtg thread activity ::yay

FF set looks really cool, if I still had irl mtg friends I'd probably buy some. I hope the reanimation spells are FF inspired like "Life" or "Raise"! And speaking of reanimation spells I was going through my cards
reanimation_.jpg

Anyone else played a deck with a reanimation strategy? I never had a broken deck like mana-less dredge (ichorids, narcomoebas, bridges, bazaars etc.), but it was always fun playing my janky dredge deck ^_^ I'm pretty sure these came from that deck.

Wizards is apparently making a new TCG that they said would be fast paced with games ending in quick 5-6 turns. Now you all know me as the local Yu-Gi-Oh schizophrenic so you know that sounds very appealing and fun to me. I really hope they don't fuck this up. And I really hope the lore is good, major part of what I want from TCGs is good lore. The MTG lore to me is really lackluster and almost MCU-like. Maybe I'm just spoiled with how incredible the YGO lore is but Wizards had decent lore for their OTHER TCG Duel Masters so its not like they can't do it.
Oh and I hear they're bringing Duel Masters back overseas since its largely successful and huge still in Japan. I would 100% be interested in that a lot more than MTG since the card art and the full-arts are insanely more appealing to me.

I found a whole set with other random stuff someone left behind when they moved

A whole set? Wow. Which set was it? I remember wotc used to have card redemption for mtgo where if you completed a set online you could physically redeem it, but I don't think they do that anymore.

I played manaless dredge for a while because I wanted to see how it plays - it was hilarious and later fueled my desire for self mill strategies in edh (Mimeoplasm or Muldrotha).

Reanimator has been one of my favorites back then too but I feel that Dread Return has heavily fallen out of favor these days due to Victimize and Reanimate being more readily available again. I mean, it's still okay, especially if you're using stuff like Ashen Ghoul or Nether Shadows to fuel it's flashback.

In EDH I have recently come to appreciate this card

It's critical to note that, while the effect is similar to unearth, nothing happens to the creature if it dies/flickers/bounces before the exile trigger happens.

I haven't played much MtG in years, since all of my friends who did left the town or the country entirely. I still have a shoebox full of spare cards, and ten built decks from the era around 2014-2016. Theros and Tarkir, mainly. I've been thinking of turning them into a Cube perhaps.

I've also thought about maybe getting into more oldschool magic, from before even that, but I ain't about to spend another dime on cards with nobody to play with. I COULD print proxies but I can't even begin to imagine how much I would end up printing, I've already filled a whole binder with Battletech mech sheets, and those aren't colored.

Nice! I have watched lsv play that deck on youtube and it looks wild. I love how in vintage the strategy is to mulligan until you get a bazaar :loldog

Yea, that doesn't surprise me dread return sucks now >_< Time spiral was around when I started playing, so it was a janky budget standard dredge deck I was playing. It was the dredge deck at the time where I think the main strategy was to flashback traitors clutch on a large grave troll iirc.

I wouldn't go so far and say that Dread Return sucks now. It's still a pretty solid card. You can get two uses out of it and you can safely discard it due to it's flashback costs. I would say it fills a specific niche like the aura reanimators (Animate Dead, Dance of the Dead or Necromancy).

Speaking of Dance of the Dead, MaRo once mentioned that it's too wordy to be reprinted in the current template and that it would have been a prime candidate to see a reprint in The List which was by then abolished.

Ok cool, I always liked it. I forget how I would get sac fodder on the battlefield to make use of it, but I remember it was pretty consistent.

While I do think Randy Gallegos did a fantastic job on that art with that skeleton man busting out some sweet moves, my favorite card that involves death and dancing would be macabre waltz: the art is so horrifying, I love it
dis-47-macabre-waltz.jpg

I wish it was more powerful because I like the art, but I guess it was probably already pretty good in limited (I didn't play during og Ravnica) for a common? I can see this being pretty efficient at that rarity, but it's not like you would draft multiples of this... Would it be that broken as an instant at least?

Back then these two were favorite additions because of their ability to come back on their own

These days it depends on the format and deck you play. It still sees a lot of play in EDH mostly when you combine black with green for token generation or black/anything aristocrats. If all else fails, just cast a Sengir Autocrat and use his 3 serfs.

Macabre Waltz doesn't seem that bad (it was recently reprinted in Foundations), what I find a bit odd is that they replaced Jim Murray's art in Ravnica Remastered.

As far as art is concerned, I prefer the older artists like Ron Spencer, Nielsen or Pete Venters. Modern artwork often feels too samey or busy. It really doesn't help that new artworks are large and hyper detailed images that are being scaled down to fit on the card.
Wrexial is my alltime favorite example for that. I've seen it wrong for so many years because the details are simply lost on that cropped image.

I am kinda glad that they brought back some of the older artists like Richard Kane Ferguson or Drew Tucker

I don't know about current stuff, but that's cool it's getting reprints. I think it's a good card, and in addition has great flavor with the effect. Just want it a little more juiced cause I like the art. Was it ever good in constructed? I could be wrong and maybe it is really good?

WHAT!? Why would they do that? *checks scryfall* dammit wotc... The new artist did fine, but c'mon, I kind of think of that as Murray's card. That art is so iconic to me, it's probably the first thing that comes to my mind in terms of "horror" and "grotesque" for mtg. Sure, use what you want to fit the flavor of another set, but wotc doesn't even use it for a Ravnica revist!?

What's your guyses opinion on custom cards for cubes?
I proxy and design cards for funsies, I've got quite the "portfolio" of stuff I've made so far...

I've been getting way into it lately. Unfortunately it's all Fortnite'd now and I don't like 99% of the art as much as I do the stuff from when I was a kid. Also every oldhead says they hate the only format that anyone plays anymore, Commander. So-
I've just been sticking to PreModern and solo play in MTG Forge Adventure and the Shandalar game from '97, but I do want to get some friends together for a digital draft on TableTop Simulator or something. Just can't get anyone to even let me know their availability so I give up.
I also tried Arena but didn't like it, and MTGO doesn't work on Linux sadly.

Maybe we can set something up here somehow. I'll keep the idea in mind.

Let's see some. I'm also dabbling in making some custom cards, though not for real play. Just as an exercise and for print and display. The problem is my experience with MtG is like 20 years old now so I couldn't even make a properly power-creeped playable card if I wanted to.
I just learned that Regenerate doesn't even exist anymore and I was going to use it as a theme for one of my key card cycles...

Not more soulless Doctor who, Marvel or Assassin creed cash grabs. Or worse, the LoTR collaboration that deliberately dismissed Tolkien's descriptive writing when depicting characters.
Oh brother, another snowflake melting over black Aragorn ::unhappy

Where were you noble purists when John Howe painted the Balrog with wings?
balroghoweoriginalidea.jpg

Where was this righteous anger when Nasmith never painted Gandalf's eyebrows literally going out farther than the brim of his hat like Tolkien said they did?
TN-Gandalf_and_Shadowfax.jpg

What about when nearly every artistic adaptation for the last several decades has depicted Hobbits with large bulbous feet when Tolkien never wrote they had anything more than hair on top and rough soles from going barefoot all the time?
And where were you all with the fury you've shown for the unforgivable transgression of being one of a million pieces of art for this property that dares expressing an artistic vision that features a -gasp- brown skinned woman, when ol' Peter Jackson used and made even more famous every one of these un-Tolkien-esque representations of the characters???

Get a grip. It's art. It can be whatever the artist wants.

used to be a really big fan back then.. but my friends that are playing it are now too far away and don't have the time with my job.

used to have a lot of decks, favorite one was a " infection " or some mill / blue black decks.

don't play it online though... all the cards games online are only battling agaisn't people using the latest meta over and over imo. i want to have a little fun.

O_o whoa! That card looks lots of fun ^_^ I like the synergy of the abilities! -2 when on the defensive to buy needed time, and +1 when on the offensive is a huge threat. But +1 can then be used defensively on a chump blocker for more gas.

And go for the -7 and call it a day

I made the mistake of trying to join a few commander groups right as 2020 started. Since then I've played maybe 10 games total (won one, woo!) but haven't really got a consistent group especially since I've moved a couple of times. I've got Doctor Who decks, the Final Fantasy decks and a couple different Zombie decks made. I'll get a group sometime.

Probably the most expensive card I have in MTG and it does look good. Though I'm more of a Y'Shtola deck player. Or a Celestial Toymaker. Or Cloud Strife. Or I would be if I had the opportunities to play...
