New Challenger
Not in a nostalgic way, not with a caveat, but with a period. I do not think there is anything wrong with the Dreamcast controller.
The biggest complaint that i know of is the fact it has one analog stick. Purely from a modern perspective, this is hard to get used to. There indeed does feel like there was space to put another analog stick on the controller. I wont deny either of those things, but people act like developers didn't know that. Devs putting a game onto the Dreamcast knew there was no second analog stick. Problems with camera control that we know now can be solved by putting things onto a second analog stick was not as widely used then. Those problems are simply issues with the growing pains of 3D gaming, not the controller. The PS1 had two analog sticks in its lifetime, and it was still a couple years after the Dreamcast died that dual analog stick control for camera movement became a norm. So yes, looking at it now, dual analog sticks could have enhanced gameplay, but it is not necessary and majority of the games on the system are fine without it.
The second biggest complaint i hear about is the wire placement. I just plain do not understand this one? The wire comes out the bottom.. okay? Do you hold the controller tight to your stomach when you play? Do you need those two inches more of space that badly? No matter what, unless the controller is wireless there is going to be a wire hanging down, top or bottom. The wire being at the top would change basically nothing about it. I will never get why this is such a big detractor for some. There's also controller wire extension cords that are easily available if it's too short for you.
Not specifically a controller problem, but the VMU beep when you turn the console on. Putting batteries in your VMU gets rid of this problem. For people who are really sensitive to noise i can see how this would be annoying. If you're that sensitive to noise though, i imagine you already dont like the Dreamcast from how loud the laser and the fan are. You can also just unscrew the back of the VMU and snip one teeny little wire to get rid of the beeping all together. But this really isnt a controller issue, its a VMU issue moreso.
It would have been cool if they kept the classic sega d-pad, but the one they went with isn't bad either. I have used it plenty and have zero qualms with it. It's not mushy, but its not hard either. It's not too sharp, or too undefined like the duke controller d-pad. It's just a fine d-pad. Nothing wrong with it.
To end this, anyone is allowed to dislike whatever controller they want. Preferences are what make anything interesting. But saying the dreamcast controller is somehow objectively bad is just plain wrong in my eyes. I personally really dont like the ps2 controller, but it's in no way a bad controller. Just wish these things weren't such a common opinion i see about the Dreamcast.
