I loved Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for its rich story, engaging world, and especially the dialogue system where your choices really mattered in conversations with NPCs. I'm looking for other games that offer a similar experience—games where you can shape your character through dialogue, influence the story, and feel immersed in a branching narrative.

Any recommendations for story-driven RPGs or adventure games with strong dialogue mechanics? Slice of life, sci-fi or fantasy settings are a plus, but I'm open to anything with great writing and choices that actually matter.

Dues Ex 1

Vampire: The Masquerade CRPG series

Fallout series except 3 and 4

Jade Empire

Witcher 3

Way of the Samurai 4. (More of a non-serious game that has humor, but point of the game is very rich paths to experience by making small changes and thus you change your whole future. So it make you wanna replay the game again and again to see what will change this time.)

Well if you guys wanna experience a fun funny game that has tons of dialogue options and like to change the way how game unfolds then my favorite game is this one:

If you don't mind isometric and a lot of reading, Planescape Torment is one of the best games at that.
Otherwise I'd say Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines.

For a slightly less common recommendation, I'd say Divinity II (the 2009 one), which although far from a serious game, it featured an interesting and often hilarious dialogue system that included the option to mind read NPCs, leading to even further options.

Easy answer but honestly, Baldur's Gate 3 if the setting strikes your fancy at all and you're up for modern games. The reactivity in that game is on a whole other level. There seems to be so many branching paths in that game that it's a wonder they managed to cobble it up into a coherent experience.

Yeah my brother talks about it a lot but but it doesn't really seem too different even than Skyrim lol.

I really don't see any resemblance to skyrim in it to be honest.
I mean even in Skyrim your actions matters so IDK whatever BG3 has is different even than Skyrim. For example he says "some characters shows up and if you want kill him or make him join your party" and he talk about how things can unfold so differently and Skyrim was no different. However he is mostly tabletop RPG gamer who has a giant Middle-earth map hanged on his wall while I play tabletop RPGs too but I have giant Fallout New Vegas poster on my wall lol, so he think the dice system is so hot shit it make the game "better" than any other CRPGs lol. But since I didn't play the game I have no way to judge if it's even better than Skyrim lol.

witcher 1 and 2, especially 1. it's a little janky in some ways. But it left me very impressed with how the dialog carries it, given the context of how small the company was at the time and the timeframe it came out in.

IMO Witcher 1 is the best Witcher game as in best Geralt of Rivia simulation but I know non-Witcher fans would hardly like the game unless they like fantasy stuff and think witcher stuff is cool and like Geralt, so Witcher 3 is overall a better game for most people but then 2nd game was a better Witcher game because 3rd game's Geralt turned into "generic likeable character" BS and too little decent dialogues options to turn the Geralt into more like original Geralt. After reading the books for years playing 3rd game is disappointing for butchering Geralt's character more and more, but gotta appreciate how great the game is.

Pleasantly surprised to see a few Jade Empire mentions. It's criminally underrated. My personal favorite Bioware project.

Ummmm... why did no one bothered to tell OP about KOTOR 2 yet? Early Obsidian games were basically just Bioware games so outside of it you also have Alpha Protocol and Fallout New Vegas. Mass Effect 1-3 and Dragon Age Origins are also going to be worth check out, both created by Bioware who made KOTOR 1. If you're willing to take the deep dive into a more combat based RPG with a heaver focus on rules/combat you might find the Owlcat games worth playing. Wrath of the Righteous especially has nine different routes in it and a bunch of different ways you can effect you companions thought out the game.

At the time I was watching too much Jackie Chan movies so I wanted a game like that so some people recommended me the game and I was so hooked up. I was never non-JRPG gamer beforehand per se, I just played Morrowind back then so Jade Empire was my 2nd non-JRPG. Thanks to Jade Empire I got to know and care about other games like KOTOR 1 (I don't even like Star Wars but it's a legendary game) and et cetera.

Because KOTOR 1 is a better "proper" game and KOTOR 2 is unfinished mess. It's more like "remake" of 1st game without having all the good parts. Clearly one of those games that when a game is hit they copy-paste similar game. Otherwise KOTOR 2 is not "bad", it's rather trivial. So I wouldn't recommend either only KOTOR 2 or "KOTOR 1-2". I would only recommend the 1st game and if you like it you may wanna play 2nd game and either like it or wish you never had played it lol.

You could always play KOTOR II with the removed content patch, adds a lot of the stuff from development that was left in the files. Makes the game a bit better. I still like both though. Definitely play Mass Effect 1-3 and Dragon Age Origins.

That is true KOTOR 1 is the more polished game.

It's a sequel of course it's going to play the same, but as far as writing and dialog goes (which is what this thread is about) KOTOR 2 is way better. KOTOR 1 is the solid typical Star Wars story while KOTOR 2 is the ambitious story that tries to do something new with the setting. I also think it's unfair to call it a remake because the narrative and overall atmosphere of KOTOR 2 is so difference then the first game that it's totally possible for someone who didn't care for the first game to like it.
