Lookin for JRPG

I finished:
Earthbound
Mother 3
Lunar (PS1)

Emotional experience was worth it.
(prefer SNES, SATURN, GBA, PS1)
- Chrono and Mana (combat seemed too much energy for me atm).
- Live a Live not feeling it right now. I'll revisit these 3 games later.
(im new to rpgs)

Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2 on the GBA was fun although I never finished it (I'm terrible at actually finishing any games), Super Mario RPG for SNES I also remember playing for hours (idk if I can even count it as a JRPG? lol), PS2/PSP is not one of your preferred consoles but I feel I should still mention Persona 3 and 4 as games with fun stories that get a little intense at times (4 is more lighthearted than 3), I think the first two games in the series are on PS1 but I haven't tried those

I know this is on newer consoles, but it had a retro style to it... Octopath Traveller had some really good and sometimes emotional stories depending on which characters you chose.

Ohhhhohohoho, there are so many RPGs for you to take a look into, I'd go as far as to say 90% fulfilled at least one of those. A few of my favorites (these are general favorites, so pretty much every console got listed here, just pick out the ones for GBA/PS1/SNES/Saturn if the others aren't doable):

-Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
-Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (DS)
-Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GameCube)
-Shin Megami Tensei II (SNES)
-Breath of Fire I-IV (I and II on SNES, III and IV on PS1, though IV was recently ported to GOG)
-Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War (SNES)
-Mega Man X: Command Mission (GameCube/PS2)
-Etrian Odyssey III (DS/Switch/Steam)
-Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS)
-Muramasa The Demon Blade/Rebirth (Wii, PSV)
-Fate Extra (PSP)
-Final Fantasy V (SNES)
-Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (Redux) (DS, 3DS)
-Persona 4 (Golden) (PS2, PSV, PC, modern consoles iirc)
-Yakuza (PS2)
-Yakuza 2 (PS2)
-Yakuza Kurohyou (PSP)
-Yakuza Kurohyou 2 (PSP)
-Yakuza 3 (PSP)
-Mystic Ark (SNES)
-Ys IV: Dawn of Ys (PC Engine)
-Ys V (SNES)
-Baroque (Saturn)
-Suikoden II (PS1, PC)
-Madou Monogatari (Genesis)
-Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon (Saturn) (actually got fan translated a few days ago, so you may still see it on the Repo)
-Sakura Wars (Saturn)
-Odin Sphere (PS2, PS3, PSV)
-Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade (or just Fire Emblem overseas) (GBA)
-Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (GBA)
-Persona 2 duology (both originally were on PS1, but the definitive versions are on PSP. Eternal Punishment is the sequel to Innocent Sin)
-Yggdra Union (GBA, PSP)
-Knights in the Nightmare (DS, PSP)
-Disgaea franchise in general
-Phantasy Star IV (Genesis)
-Tales of Rebirth (PS2) (fan translated)
-Tales of Symphonia (GameCube)
-Sailor Moon Another Story (SNES)
-Princess Minerva (SNES)
-Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1, the Saturn version isn't a good port, but I think there's a hack to make it better)
-Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA)
-Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (DS)
-Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (DS)
-Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (DS)
-The World Ends With You (DS)
-Mega Man Battle Network franchise (all on GBA)
-Mega Man Star Force trilogy (all on DS)
-Custom Robo: Battle Revolution (or just Custom Robo overseas) (GameCube)
-Custom Robo Arena (DS)
-Golden Sun trilogy (two on GBA, last one on DS)
-Advance Wars franchise (first two on GBA, last two on DS)
-Popful Mail (Sega CD)
-Phantasy Star Portable (PSP)
-Phantasy Star Portable 2 (PSP)

-Robotrek (SNES)
-Atelier Marie + Elie (PS2)
-Mana Khemia duology (PS2)
-Black Rock Shooter: The Game (PSP)
-Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
-Skies of Arcadia Legends (GameCube)

-Terranigma (SNES)
-Secret of Evermore (SNES)
-Lufia II (SNES)
-Treasures of the Rudras (SNES)
-Final Fantasy IV (SNES)

SMT1(if you can't tolerate SNES random encounter rate, then play PS1 version) and SMT2
Persona 2 duology(play IS on PS1, avoid the terrible PSP version while EP is fine in both PS1 and PSP)
Dragon Quest V
Xenogears
Panzer Dragoon Saga(play Panzer Dragoon and Panzer Dragoon II Zwei first)

If you played Lunar 1, what are you waiting to try Lunar 2? Its the best one for me. Leo is such an awesome character, reminds me of Vegeta of Dragon Ball Z with his personality and pride.

Xenogears is top tier... Highly inspired on Evangelion as well.

Some people mentioned Breath of Fire 3 and 4, but there is not too much "emotional" stuff on there, really awesome RPGs though.

I think most people just recommended you good RPGs or their favorite RPGs instead of ones with emotional plots going on lol

JRPG is a tough term to nail down sometimes, but I'll drop a list of games with a focus on story, and heavy RPG elements. Some are tactical, but the story is still very character-based. I'll try to avoid the *really* obvious ones as well, but since you're new to RPGs, forgive me if some are games you've already heard of.

SNES:
Energy Breaker (English translated)
Front Mission (English translated)
Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
Marvelous: Mōhitotsu no Takarajima (English translated)
Mystic Ark (English translation)
Shin Megami Tensei: if... (English translated)
Star Ocean (English translated)
Super Mario RPG
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (English translated)
Tales of Phantasia (English translated)
Terranigma
Xak: The Art of Visual Stage (English translated)

PSX:
Final Fantasy Tactics
Kartia: The Word of Fate
Koudelka
Linda³ (Linda Cube - English translation)
Parasite Eve
PoPoLoCrois Monogatari
(English translated)
Revelations: Persona
SaGa Frontier
Suikoden
Vagrant Story
Valkyrie Profile
Wild Arms
Xenogears

Saturn:
Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean
Grandia (English translated)
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Shining the Holy Ark

Others to check out:
DynamiTracer (SNES/Satellaview [En-T])
Langrisser II (Genesis/Megadrive [En-T])
Phantasy Star II (Genesis/Megadrive)
Radiata Stories (PS2)

Thousand Arms (PSX)

I feel that for Megami Ibunroku Persona will be better wait for Tom's translation as the localization has americanizations and lacks Snow Queen route while PSP has QoLs and at same time has issues like broken encounter rate, changed OST(thankfully encounter rate and OST can be patched) or ugly HUD(although someone is making a new HUD that is closer to PS1)

SNES: Tengai Makyou Zero (Far East of Eden), Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy V

Saturn: Albert Odyssey (gives Lunar Vibes), Magic Knight Rayearth, Shining The Holy Ark

GBA: Mario and Luigi Super Star Saga, Golden Sun, Riviera The Promised Land, Medabots (Metabee/Rokusho version)

PS1: Tales of Phantasia, Wild Arms, Breath of Fire III, Grandia

if youve played Lunar, you have to play Lunar 2... in particular the Complete for psx (or more modern ones if they have it too) version... its combat encounters loading can make it seem longer than the sega cd version, but its worth it for its new content, special new end game and ending... its so good as you get to know the new characters, the connections to the first game, and in particular its really great new ending (imo)... another series ive been playing through to finish off is Wild ARMS and so far 1 and 2 have some really sweet and sad moments (for the time especially) and really good music like Lunar... even older school, you could go with Emerald Dragon (most accessible is probably the super famicom one with english patch found right here) as it took its story pretty seriously with love/death etc and does it really well (again for the time)... the Ys series is always good (my favorites have been the Ark of Napishtim, Oath in Felghana style), but the most emotional storytelling in the older ones is really the prequel Ys Origins, mainly because it shows you how the stuff in Book 1 and 2 happened and without spoiling, just make sure you play all of it, to see what im talking about.. or of course..... Xenogears and the Xenosaga games, but those might not be quite what your looking for

Lunar 2 is my favorite also, mainly for the new characters (and how everything connects to Lunar 1) and (at least post sega cd) endgame and ending... its so good... i forgot to mention Breath of Fire 3 and 4, so thanks for that.. yeah and Dragon Quest 5 is super good too

Lost Oddyssey is a very emotional story game, the main story but also the smaller stories spread throughout the millennial dreams of the immortal character Kaim. By the way, being immortal can sometimes be a bad thing. For Xbox 360.

Also The Last Story for Wii and a little gem of a game that's more action RPG than a traditional RPG, Pandora's Tower, also for Wii. Incidentally, it's also very emotional.

I made a grave error saying Yakuza 3 is a PSP game lmfao

SNES: Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War, Final Fantasy 4, Final Fantasy 5, Final Fantasy 6, Super Mario RPG Legend of the 7 Stars

GBA: Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls (Remakes of FF1 and FF2 on one cartridge), Final Fantasy 4, Final Fantasy 5, Final Fantasy 6, Fire Emblem The Sacred Stones

DS: Mario and Luigi Partners in Time, Mario and Luigi Bowsers Inside Story, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

have you tried Final Fantasy V?
it was my first FF and honestly too many people disregard it but it's got the perfect blend of comedy, fun-ness, and seriousness, although the overall feel is kind of lighthearted, which is exactly what people didn't like (pff, scrubs)

Final Fantasy 6 on SNES, the only RPG with a somewhat well developed story in this console in my opinion.
Och! Haha SNES had many JRPGS with great story but i agree FF6 is perhaps the best. Also Lufia 2 and Secret of Mana 3 are great titles totally worth the time 😁
