I am playing the Tomb Raider IV-V-VI Remastered collection, and while you can set it to modern controls not only are the levels ofc clearly designed with tank controls in mind, but contrary to the public concensus of hating on tank controls I really don't find them bad at all. Like, this is not me saying "they're tolerable, I can live with them", no I genuinely like them. Anything is hard until you master it, and as someone who has, tank controls in an action game like this where you have to be fast on your toes, are of no hinderance to me whatsoever.

I can understand why not many games today are made with tank controls, but for older titles like these I welcome them with open arms.

Been replaying through the OG resident evil games. Currently on Code Veronica. Tank controls aren't bad at all, but I will say that quickturn is almost a necessity if you're gonna swarm me with enemies all over. lol

It's not like games QUIT doing tank controls, more improved them. I remember when tank controls were two sticks. Move both forward to move forward, same with back, and to turn you both need to be opposite ends. Also sorry but I AM NOT a fan of Lara's weird crabwalk strafing, its very unnatural.

In some genres like horror i do think tank controls are a good fit but i don't really like playing high precision genres like platformers with them, i gave up on playing Croc because of it's tank controls.

Tank controls are actually okay depending on the game! It’s about how the game was designed. I think it can be a bit of an issue if tank controls are used in a game where the camera changes frequently.

ASIDE FROM OLD SCHOOL RESIDENT EVIL! Somehow they make it work, and I think it’s because there’s a safeguard in the code that knows when a screen change happens and says “if player is still holding this direction, continue to move them in the direction relative to where they were holding before.”

I agree, it makes it more scary with the "restriction" (I do not like tank controls in general) of your movement. So it works for that.

The classic Resident Evils (and games like them, such as Silent Hill) are the main exposure I've had to tank controls, but I always liked them for those games at the very least.

Tank controls are for tanks why you refer to them as such if you use them to control humans? They should be called human controls.

Honestly, I hated tank controls back when they were new. Lara Croft moved like a machine while Mario was more human despite being a chibi humanoid Mickey Mouse. I got caught by enemies in Resident Evil often just because I couldn't turn and aim fast enough, or even just turn around and run.

They aren't too bad in some cases, but you need refined controls (dual analog sticks or keyboard and mouse being required) for it to work, and the gameplay needs to fit them, not them horseshoed into the gameplay.

Honestly RE3 and SH1 they are pretty decent not as clunky as RE1 part of it is fast turning in SH1 and auto aim making knife actually useful in RE3

It's always the camera in these games. As long as the developers position it well I don't mind the controls.
RE4 has the over shoulder camera, but the control scheme is essentially tank controls!

I only had issues with tank controls back when I was a dumb little babby that could barely hold a controller, lol.
Still, it depends from game to game if tank controls are good or not. Stuff like classic Resident Evil, sure, but something like a 3D platformer, for example Rascal on the PS1, it makes the game basically unplayable.

Counter argument: Croc - Legend of the Gobbos.

Tank controls were created to deal with the constant camera changes of those first pre-rendered games, that way up is always forward no matter how weird the angle. Imagine a boss battle where the camera keeps changing and the directions keep changing with it. A good example of game that would benefit from tank controls is Scooby Doo on N64

Ironically I became good at tank control because of Croc.

I was always fine with them in old survival horror. The only times they bother me is in a more intense action game - they're not a good fit for that.
