Let's give tank controls some love!!!

Boku NO nayatsumi makes tank controls work in a very funny way: the way you bumble around is EXACTLY how small children run around the house semi-aimlessly

I only think they're questionable with certain genres like platformers.

I think it makes sense for survival horror games. For it to be scary, there needs to be a certain element of helplessness. Reducing the freedom of movement the character has is one way to do that. It certainly does work better with pre-rendered backgroudns in my opinion. Tormented Souls is the only throwback sort of game like that I can think of in recent memory. Crow Country was close, though the backgrounds were fully 3D. Going to different genres, I'm not sure if the controls in Mega Man Legends would be considered tank-style or not, but I enjoyed those while understanding how they could be frustrating for someone else.

"Tomb Raider 2" has been my first videogame ever, on PC with keyboard, and I finished it 100%: though, should I replay it now, I'm not sure I would be able again to deal with those controls, because yes, they are "old" and also because I'm used to analog sticks and newer games with easier controls.

They’re not really hated to begin with. Except by modern gamers.

EGM hated them with a passion. They even went so far as to give RE1 a bad review despite Capcom threatening them with all their ads being pulled if they did it. There's nothing modern about it; you just hear it more now that the internet lets more people say it.

Electronic Gaming Monthly?
That’s a fair point. I never kept up magazines that weren’t in my language at the time so I wasn’t aware. Plus survival horror wasn’t popular here to begin with so my knowledge is pretty tunnel visioned.
Very interesting info though.

Let me remind you guys to the one game which popularized tank controls that can be enjoyed up to this day:
