"May your hobby become mainstream" is a subtly evil curse that's analogous to the classic "may you live in interesting times"..

The current era is proof-positive that Gatekeeping absolutely can be a good thing, and should be exercised in order to, well, exorcise the more recent polluting subversives out..

Traditional elements of a hobby (etc.) can, and should, be maintained– and without apology. Sure, "the only constant in the universe, is change." But unlimited growth & change just for the sake of unlimited growth & change is, by definition, CANCER... and cancer left unchecked always results in the eventual death of the host organism. But any & all aggressive cancer treatments are also extremely unpleasant (to put it mildly), but necessary. The analogous "chemotherapy" that is necessary will also invariably "kill off" some positive elements as well during the course of "treatment," but the consequences of allowing this "cancer" to freely metastasize further will eventually be far worse..

Good! Glad we cleared that out. People like me usually thrive on active communication, even when others suggest its antithesis. Regarding the advice, thanks but I prefer it my way.
I reserve the right to choose my company, parasocial circles, interests, hobbies, etc. Which some would suggest is bad. What is bad is bad and what is good is good, that is as long as I can still decide it for myself.

I prefer to remain friendly and avoid losing the right to navigate the forum and interact with others, but I wouldn't trade that for mutual respect. I think we all have heard of this meme making the rounds. People who pretend to be fans of a franchise but don't interact with it in the most basic ways. This phenomenon is prominent in the gaming sphere because people would rather watch playthroughs of games than playing it, and im not speaking about E-Sports or Speedruns as in watching other more experienced people a game in a way you don't play it, i mean watching someone else play the game yet you don't do it.

Thoughts?

There will always be people like those.
Just focus on the hobby and not the people orbiting the hobby.
They'll go away eventually.

Not referring to you, but I don't respect assholes who abuse their power and hide behind fascism and are thin skinned/flippant on their actual 'beliefs' or don't believe in a damn thing, but the grift. Once again, you keep your company however you wish. I don't cozy up to shallow, know nothing, racist and sexist butt fucks. All of those people you mentioned are on my "go to hell and go fuck yourselves list". I can think for myself and don't need them to make my own decisions nor gaming decisions especially.

Also, I am black and all for equality. They're are all the complete opposite of what I believe and fight for, and they could not give a fuck about actual gaming, nor the positives they bring. Nor do they care about the different walks of life who make games. Any game that is Asian/Japanese/Chinese/Korean they will use as a stepping stone, and then ditch when they no longer need it, or forget about within a week or two. They only care about the all mighty dollar for themselves. Again, you choose that poison. So don't blame me, nor anyone, but yourself. That is all you get from me.

There is no passive aggressiveness. I am being straight up honest. I don't give those type of people a chance, nor the time of day, because they never learn (and they unrepentant about the awful people they are, yet still try to act like victims) and only cause pain and teach boys only to hate those different from them and/or anyone female. They lost those chances multiple times when the masks came off, or were barely containing them. I don't want their shit in my recommendation feed for a reason. Living in the grifter circle is a miserable and meaningless endeavor.

A little annoying, but no more than that. I knew this girl who claimed to love Silent Hill, especially 2 & 3, and I had just finished up 1. One day we hung out, and I got stuck during the apartment segment in 2 and asked if she could help me out. She didn't even know SH2 used TANK controls. I couldn't help but laugh; not to be malicious, but all the talk of being a fan but not even knowing the basic walk controls was a bit ridiculous. Turns out every game she claimed to love she hadn't played, so I gifted her a PS3 that I had modded. Last time I checked, she played Asuras Wrath and Bayonetta. At least she's playing now right?

my opinion on larpers (ik posers is the better term, but larper sounds WAAAYYYY funnier to say) is kinda mixed, cause yeah: the best way to be a fan is to play the game that u think is cool. but also sometimes that game is just balls hard to even play at times, like yeah theres emulation for older games, but ur not always gonna be able to run the game u want always (might be more reasons why but im a bit tired of thinking for now lol). even then, i had someone super close to me tell me that, every larper eventually becomes a real fan, its only a matter of time, and honestly truer words have never been spoken lol

I do have bad experiences with LARPers in the RP community.

The first one was when I was rping this character from a game and I mentioned, in ooc, that I wished to interact with some characters and I mentioned them, but there was no active people doing these characters. Lo and behold, someone who had been pretty much stalking me decided to pick up one of these characters. I'm always up for interactions so when they replied a prompt I kept interacting. But, of course, the character they were doing was completely off. Turns out they only had read the fandom wiki and never actually played the game... And then in the following prompt it was supposed to be something "simple". The prompt was "My character walks into your character's room and find them in pajamas ready to go to bed" or something along these lines.

instead of sending a picture in pajamas of the character they sent a nsfw fanart....

The second one was when setting up the scene, the person accused me of "assuming things" when describing their characters' bedroom. Turns out that this person had no idea that you actually go into their character's bedroom during an event and if you write "<character name> bedroom" on google you'll see screenshots of the game... And yes, their only experience with the game was watching youtube.

Now that I shared my bad experiences, let me share my personal opinion.
I don't particularly mind if someone's experience was mostly watching youtubers. After all, some games can be grindy, or too time-consuming, or in a system that the person has no access to. Not everyone has 30 hours to pour in a game. Or 135 hours in some very lore-heavy titles.
The one thing that I do care is when these people walk in and talk as if they are an authority in these games. I saw someone doing a LORE video on something, and this person had never actually played the game but watched one youtuber playing and that youtuber didn't find that one note with lore info - so they complained about how it should be more obvious and blahblahblah.
Another thing I do care is when they superimpose their own takes and headcanons as being the only acceptable. For example, when they want to foist a Western America-Eurocentric view on a Japanese or Chinese game.
