I think we all have heard of this meme making the rounds. People who pretend to be fans of a franchise but don't interact with it in the most basic ways. This phenomenon is prominent in the gaming sphere because people would rather watch playthroughs of games than playing it, and im not speaking about E-Sports or Speedruns as in watching other more experienced people a game in a way you don't play it, i mean watching someone else play the game yet you don't do it.

Thoughts?

I watch playthroughs for the people playing it, not the game. I like watching chuds playing modern games, favorite passtimes, since I'm not gonna be playing woke stuff. Like Synthetic Man, Tryedz, Doomer, the whole bunch.

What do you mean on the rise? They've been here since 2016 and 2017. So now you just noticed? So what?

Those fuck heads wannabes will always be fuck head wannabes with no actual education and are all easily replaceable and interchangeable with each other. Even the algorithm does not give a shit about them, like they think/assume they do. Ignore them, and focus on the actual games, decent or good people who make them, interact positively with the good fans/non-toxic fans, and only call the fakers/posers out when necessary or they're doing something really stupid. Especially those who claim to be gamers, but use it as a soapbox to hate on those be different of color or female.

I used to LARP back in the late 90s and early 2000s! Vampire the Masquerade, or other World of Darkness games, usually. Funny how they had a disclaimer right in the front of the books, urging you not to use actual props for your sessions. "If you must, write 'GUN' or 'SWORD' on a note card, and use that in place of a real weapon." Didn't stop us from wearing costumes and dressing as our characters, at least!

...

...wait. This is a thread about people who watch other people play video games online...?

Oh. My bad 😅

We should protect the holiness of this hoby of ours. Those infidels should get death sentence.

To ban me or ask a moderator to ban me would be more appropriate than veiled threats. I'm shooting straight. I don't mind being judged, but I prefer to be judged by my actions than my beliefs. I mean, I never heard of a opinion crime.

You mean posers?

This 👍

Frankly, this is the first time I've encountered the term LARPers as equal to Posers, and I'm baffled

1998, I first encountered the term 'Fakers' with the same nuance as the modern Posers, was told that it came from the saying "fake it till you make it"

2004, encountered the term LARPers in martial arts forums (my first genre of forums) which meant 'someone who brags about being badass while having no ability to prove it IRL' AKA role-playing a MA expert IRL (live action)

2018, encountered the term Posers

2021, encountered the term Tourists in anime circles as "samplers of various series who don't delve deep while establishing oneself as an authority on said series"

Tourist, Faker, Performative, Poser, now larper? how many do we need?

now i was gonna say there was a post that talked about this idea very recent but dkpopman got me first, you should check it out, it was an interesting read.

I wasn't talking about you, nor did I threaten you. Though if you choose to follow those fools, then that is on you. They could not give a fuck about you. Only their wants and desires. All they care about is "engagement", your attention and your fears/prejudice for dat easy money. They don't even give a fuck about each other, and will eventually betray/backstab each other at the drop of a hat or when its convenient. It's happened many times before. It's all that awaits those only united by hate and propaganda. Have fun with that. Let met know how they make life better for you by bringing misery onto those who've done nothing wrong, other than existing and for being born different.

I dislike this stupid term.

Gaming has been normalized. That's why you see Jason the school bully who harassed you for liking games back in the 90's - early 00's for liking video games now expressing his takes and views online about games.

So no wonder he's got shitty takes and opinions. ::kefka-48

I could probably be considered a poser for some things. Like I'll get really into something, I'll watch playthroughs, learn about the game's history, listen to the soundtrack, read up on the lore fanatically, anything but playing the game because I don't have the money for it or it's Siren for the PS2. (I also don't really engage in discussion of those games online, at least when it comes to gameplay and the like.)

My takes on fans was well anyone can be a fan of something if they do like it then well they already a fan of that thing. And one thing i always say that in video games if you didn't have the urge to play it well idk if you love that game or not.

But in this term if you haven't really played the video game then consider to shut your mouth off. You barely know about the game yet you took off with some hot takes about the thing that i love? Yeah get out.

"larper" isn't really a new word. larp stands for "live action role play" so a larper is someone that engages in live action role play. what you're actually talking about a is poser or a fake fan.

please for the love of fuck next time you learn a new word on the internet, just please look it up in a dictionary instead of believing in whatever false context some over socialized dumb dumb misuses it in. this needs to be said to everyone i feel nowdays.

I knew its original term actually you don't have to be a nag, but i didn't take into consideration that the way it gets used as a meme nowadays hasn't spread that far yet (at least to this site). I think i have to change the title to "posers" so that the message gets through.

im sorry, i've just seen words change meaning in real time so much before.

I feel like the threshold of entry for being a poser is higher than a LARPer.
A poser is someone who engages in a hobby entry level, but pretends to be "harder" or more obscure than they are.
case in point: someone who plays tablet games, but nothing else, and tries to act like their ultra hardcore is a poser.
someone who watches someone else play games and then pretends to be a fan of those games on social media is a LARPer.
One of them is only pretending. the other is over inflating themselves.
