J-Pop/J-Rock Thread

Despa put out a lot of great work but the build up to coll set was something else. It’s unfortunate they ended their career with Monsters, a comparatively mediocre album by their standards. I’ve not given up hope for an eventual reunion.
A song off Monsters did sound awfully familiar to You Spin Me Right Round by Dead or Alive, thought it was a below average album from them as well.

I haven't been following Hizumi since, thanks for sharing his new band. There was a time I was heavily into Schwein, amongst other industrial bands like KMFDM, and Hideto "hide" Matsumoto's supergroup Zilch.

Any One OK Rock fan here? I used to love this band when I was younger. I still like them but I don't listen to it as much as before.

A track with a similar name. They aren't the typical J-Rock band that you find at Youtube/Spotify playlist, but they're amazing.

Oh yes!

I discovered their songs from Sakuga compilations and have been listening to them since then

The classic

And the Sakuga AMV I've made with their song almost 3 years ago (some scenes are cutoff unfortunately)

Same!

The classic
Omagah I absolutely love this one. I used to listen to this when I needed to feel motivated. I remember a Black Rock Shooter AMV I used to watch every day which used this song.

That's so cool! I'm almost certain that I've seen this video on my Youtube feed some time ago but never watched it. I'll watch rn. I also made some AMVs in the past but I think I've deleted everything before 2022... But there's still this one from 2023 I think which I used the song Jibun Rock from them.

I am living for this Dir En Grey representation. Been listening to them since high school.

Uroboros is still my favorite album by them.

I think that song is LOVE IS DEAD:

Honestly I didn't think Monsters was that bad of an album, FINAL CALL still gets blasted whenever I need a little bit of a kicker. NUL. is really good imo, Hizumi doesn't sing in a high register anymore, but their most recent album isn't bad. I'm still hoping one day his voice will come back like it used to.

Fun fact: karasu means crow, korosu means to murder.

Boris is such an amazing band and always good for a few surprises.
Here’s a great studio live they did for earthquaker devices: loveless.
Their guitarist Wata has a signature fuzz pedal named Hizumitas. Hizumi means distortion. Their bassist came up with the name Hizumitas when he tried to think of what the name for a distortion-type pokemon would be if it existed. For some reason a lot of Japanese musicians especially in noise adjacent genres seem to be gamers. Yako and Agata from Melt-Banana as well.

More Boris stuff:
Melody from the fantastic album "noise" which is relatively dreamy overall despite the name:

They do a lot of more experimental collaborations with Noise god Merzbow. Here’s a great live version of vomitself:

And now for something completely different: Polysics - I my me mine
Probably the only good song featuring a recorder.

Honestly I didn't think Monsters was that bad of an album.
I don’t think it’s terrible. It has good moments and I’ve even made my peace with Love is Dead but it’s a disappointing swan song to a fantastic band. It just felt like a much lesser version of Redeemer.

Btw I have my own hypothesis when it comes to Hizumi‘s supposed "rare throat condition" that proved to be the end of the band. I’m a singer myself occasionally using shouts and growls. It’s incredibly easy to permanently damage your vocal chords with that if you have the wrong technique. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that was probably it. I love his guttural singing but in a live setting it always felt a little uncontrolled. I’ve noticed a clear deterioration sound-wise between seeing the band live for the first time in 2005 and for the last time in 2009. just speculation but I wouldn’t be surprised if his throat condition was just that.

Remembered this old thing on a whim today, it was used in the second outro for GTO.
Really nice. The sudden pause at 3:24 always surprises me.

This could've worked if she didn't disappear into oblivion and acknowledged the opportunity as well a her talent in the matter. Still I dig this still today:

Ringo Shiina anyone?

Also GIRUGAMESHHHHHH
I still unironically like Girugamesh, but I never tell anyone I do nowadays, even when talking about Japanese music that I like. I guess the cat's out of the bag now...

This album was pretty important to 16-year old me because music in a language you can't understand kind of listens back to you in a way.

i have all of their albums up to "Now" on my hard drive. I love the vocalist. "Music" is a really good album. I also like their "Reason Of Crying" EP and "Crying Rain" Singles
