With games and consoles getting more and more expensive*, and now tariffs making the issue worse, it sure is a great time to be into retro games! I really want the Switch 2 and plan on buying it, but I think I'm gonna take a break from modern gaming for a little bit and focus on my incredible backlog of retro games. Looking forward to it!

Anyone else considering doing the same?

*In actuality, we are still currently living in an era where video games are at the cheapest they have ever been, even with the aforementioned price hikes, considering $60 had the value of $125 back when I was a kid. But it still hurts to see prices go up.

I'm always gonna rock the S-NES, MD, N64 etc. I'm not gonna blow $400-500 on a fancy piece of Plastic. All the games and movies I want i can download off the internet ya know why? Cause once a Pirate! Always a Pirate!

As much as i'd wish to clear out my modern game backlog as well...
I just discovered what retroachievements are and am using that as an excuse to play more retro games. Both things i've already beaten and things I haven't played before.

as ThirteeTooBeets above said, there's enough retro games to last a lifetime, and while I don't plan on playing all of them I do believe they deserve the same amount of attention as modern games and I hope to enjoy playing both.

I always play 6th and below(7th gen is only PSP, Wii and DS as I don't have a way to play PS3 and Xbox 360) games

as I don't have a modern console and I would prefer to get a more powerful PC and a Switch with ''magic'' instead getting Switch 2, PS5 or Xbox Series

I toast to that *puts a straw in his juicebox* the only reason i bother with Modern Gaming is because i am a Indie Junkie and because of Steam's 90% sales, but otherwise i has spent more time using my PC for emulating childhood consoles

Same, to be honest. And rediscovering the vast library of PSP and DS. For the current gen releases, I wait for the sales. I have quite a bit of nostalgia towards PSP especially.

I'll only consider it a great time to be into retro games when they go back to being $5 USD at the most.
True! I only play "backups" on my computer and other devices, I haven't collected in many years due to the outrageous inflation.

So many incredible games for PSP and DS.
Yeah same here, waiting on sales. The only game I have ever paid full price for was Tears of the Kingdom. Otherwise I always wait for them to go at least half off.

Sure tariffs making the issue worse. But Retro gaming has been expensive a heck the pats few years.
I mean I found a dude selling box coppy of Earthbound for 3,500 bucks. Like excuse me 3,500 grand I can get a decently used car or pay my rent for half a year.

I gave up on owning physical retro games years ago because the pieces are insane. So I rather do 100% emulation.

So I would say tariffs makes no difference they just make the insane price just seam more insane.

I remember playing Earthbound thru an emulator on my PSP, and someone was like, "thats cool, but I prefer to play on real hardware." I would too, BUT ITS SO EXPENSIVE. I already put Magic the Gathering down, im not about to pick up another expensive hobby.

If only I can find games like God Hand at an affordable price second hand...
Oh well, there's always emulation.

I have a Switch one and still have about 10 games I haven't finished so I have plently, plus all the retro games I have yet to finish. I'm good waiting for a price cut or two.

I know what you mean I wanted to own Suikoden 1 and 2 but they are also not cheap 200-300 bucks per game sure it´s not 3500k but still why pay 400-600 bucks. When I could get the remaster collection for 50 bucks for 2 games or play the releases on the PS3 that cost me 10 bucks each.

So true. The closest thing I'll probably get to playing on "real hardware" again is installing Virtual Console .wads on my softmodded Wii 😅

But I honestly love the benefits of playing on modern emulators. Save states, fast forward/rewind, customizable controls; it's typically a much better user experience compared to the original hardware. It just lacks the nostalgia.

With the recent strides in emulation, console modifications, as well as flash carts, it's never been easier to play the entire library of a retro system. The community efforts to preserve the classics should be celebrated.

I know that people will buy consoles no matter what, but now is the time to start being friendly to anyone who shows interest in emulation and game preservation. Friendliness and patience.

The death of physical games is happening before our very eyes and nintendo is championing that movement for some stupid reason. As long as I have a community like this, and friends who keep the interest alive, we're gonna be okay. 80 dollars for a digital game is unacceptable. 90 for a physical one is laughable.

I'll keep to my steam deck with RetroDeck for a long long time.
