Is is true that videogames are bad for your brain?

It's not gonna kill you or make you stupid or anything, but some games can absolutely be addictive and bad for you. I don't care what anyone says, most F2P multiplayer titles are made to be as addictive as possible. This goes for most gacha games too, except its 20 times worse there.
It can also absolutely deteriorate your mental health depending on how much time you spend in front of your screen in your room, not to mention physical health as well.
Anything done in excessive amounts is bad for you, and I mean genuinely anything in the world. Nothing of too much is ever good for you.

I don't think video games rot your brain, quite the opposite. I think video games exercise logic, problem solving and hand eye coordination skills. Plus there's a lot of reading involved in some genres and it gets people interested in tech, art, and music.

However, I do think addiction can be a real problem when it comes to certain video games. Honestly, humans can get addicted to a lot of things, like food, drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, etc... So its more of a flaw with the human brain than video games specifically. MMORPGs, gatcha and gambling games are programmed in a certain way to exploit the addictive side of the brain. Not everyone is susceptible to a gambling addiction, but its worth keeping in mind.

What the fuck are you talking about?
See what I mean...

Gambling is an addiction just as an addiction to drugs like cocaine & heroin. Which leads to financial problems & mental health issues.

I'm not lazy & this thread is going absolutely nowhere fast.
i did not say that you were lazy. if anything, i was on your side earlier in saying that it was a coincidence that what you wrote looked ai created. ai was created by people, it uses what we came up with to carry out its functions.

destinyduelist has the best post on this subject.

i, don't quite know what you mean in regards to fake-kun. he popped up like three times in this thread and i don't think any of his posts save for one mention you. i think you might have gotten him mixed up with someone else.

His derogatory comment regarding OPs parents is uncalled for. Which lead me to believe I already jumped into the fire in his crosshairs, I don't like stepping on people's toes much less belittling people or bash people's beliefs in this case entitled opinions as you can see I already opened a can of worms but you live and learn from it.

Looking over my initial post, I can see that it's kinda rough.

yeah, that was a bit harsh to jump to that level of insulting right off the bat. i'm guessing that he's met people like that in real life, which would give him that impression that others would be like that.
it's the internet, someone is going to take offense to something, no matter what.
fake-kun doesn't seem like he would care too much of what you think about his opinion. i doubt he would hold something like this against you.

You should not let your parents opinions influence everysingle thought of your life though, i know most of them are not trying to harm you but your life is yours.

Anyways as every media some have benefits and some don't. But i don't think the stupidity or the smartness cant be really quantified. From personal experience, i learned a lot from videogames, but also from books, from movies, from tv, from music, etc.

But i also understand that addiction can happen, and i will be fairly autocritical that maybe i was playing too much when i was lil. As a teenager though? I find videogames as a nice way to cope with some problems, but is all personal experience. Still try to find balance in your life. Not all time is for playing videogames but no videogames can be also bad if your life already centers around them for a while.

Get you addicted? YES

Rot your brain? DEPENDS

The brain is like a computer, and the old ComSci adage applies: Garbage In, Garbage Out (meaning the quality of input decides the output quality)

The question then is: WHAT KIND OF VIDEO GAMES?

If it's a stupid flash h-game (older men of culture would know), then yes: it's a brain rot. If it tests your pattern recognition, logic ability, response quality (reaction time, split-second judgment, etc.), planning ability, etc. then NO: IT DOES NOT ROT YOUR BRAIN; RATHER IT ENHANCES IT

OTOH, why are video games addictive? It's because video games are inherently programmed (remember: Garbage In, Garbage Out) to have effort = rewards. And IT IS HIGHLY VISIBLE (unlike the real world, where you slog on without any direction nor confirmation)

That tracking of MEASURABLE PROGRESS (our brains love measureables) keeps one inspired to progress more, and thus they keep playing

P.S. sadly, some recent games skewed the efforts = rewards scaling, requiring less effort for the same rewards; all for the sake of drawing in the "non-gamers"

Couldn't have said it better myself. Newer games also implement engagement based matchmaking. This is probably the worst thing they've done since FOMO battle passes, gachas and limited time ingame shops.
I'd also like to chime in on something said a few posts above, parents are stupid. But parents also just want what's best for you. I don't know how much time you spend playing games and I know a lot of times parents will make it seem like the thing you do is 50 times bigger than it is but it's a good idea to take a break from the games for a bit as well. Regardless of what people will tell you, going a day or two in the week without playing a game isn't a bad thing. Limiting your play time to a few hours a day is also good. Your parents might be stupid, but kids are even more stupid. No offense to you. A lot of kids don't really have much else to do all day, especially with summer break coming in, so they play games all day. I know back when I was a stupid kid during summer break I'd play for God knows how long. That's a horrible thing. Not assuming you do this by the way CJ, I just want to chime in with another side of the story that people will overlook a lot of the time I feel like.
Sorry for any bad wording, I don't think calling people "stupid" is the worst thing in the world, especially not in a satirical manner. Feel like I have to explain its satire and irony on this site otherwise I'll be like the picture where they had all those guns pointed at John Wick.

my heavens my reading is so terrible today your post made me laugh out loud at how things escalated so quickly but i misread your post entirely
Holy typo, yeah I must've typed something stupid instead of "Its" and it autocorrected to "I'm" :loldog :loldog

Please. Teachers want cell phones banned in classrooms so the students can't record them - be it for poor behavior on the teachers' part, poor teaching ability, or teaching things parents would object en masse to. Every study (that doesn't reference one another or used clearly fallacious data) has shown little-to-no correlation between banning phones and improved academics. We found this out during the ridiculous covid lockdowns, the webcam education, and the teachers freaking out when they learn that a student has a parent watching them.

My grandma last morning showed me a video that quotes an article with similar info about addiction

It's in the grays, as with most things. The existence of tech and games isn't bad in itself. Excess and emotional substitution can be bad. That said, it is an irreversible trend; people will need to learn to handle it - viliying the existence of games is childish.

Here's the problem with addiction arguments: Anything that creates a dopamine response can be addictive in a subset of the populous. Should we ban cars because driving is highly enjoyable for some people? Should we ban sex because some people get addicted to it? Ban air conditioning because of the pleasure rush when walking inside a cool building on a sweltering day? Ban fire because of pyromaniacs?

Of course not. So why try to punish the whole for an issue with the minority? Because it's not about "addiction" - it's about control. It always has been.

Now, I didn't bring-up narcotics and the like as not only are those substances supremely and near-instantly addictive to the majority of the populous, but because drug addiction directly results in higher crime - murder, assault, theft, burglary, reip, etc. Plus the growth and creation of these substances creates even more crime.

They want to ban cellphones but students literally set Google Chromebooks on fire. We're de-evolving slowly day by day, hour by hour.

Again, a super-minority. I would also question their parents as to why their kids have no common sense. Do we ban cinnamon due to the equally silly "cinnamon challenge?"
