As the name implies, games that during the import from Japan to USA or Viceversa they got mangling, like if during the exporting process they were treated like this

While i put it in the General Retro section since i have notice the phenomena dissapeared slowly, i think i will be corrected eventually

Xenosaga 3 has a very god-awful censorship

I glad that a uncensored patch exists for both dub(that's how I played Xenosaga 3 dubbed and uncensored) and undub

What happened to it? I don't know much about the franchise.
Multiple characters were totally flanderized, soon to be outdated slang was inserted without an equivalent in the original, jokes and lines that the "localizers" found distasteful were removed, some lines are just outright wrong. You know, the usual, but this is a very long running RPG series with frequent call backs to past characters and world building, the kind that expects you to play every game in order, so it's pretty egregious here.

Streets of Rage 3 was different in the North American version. Sega took out a sub-boss, modified the outfits of the characters and changed the plot.
But the worst part is that it got more difficult, to the point that many people prefer the Japanese version.
And if you choose easy mode, the game ends prematurely.

Such a shame that this is such a recognizeable phenomenon at this point. Have you played the Daybreak games, by any chance? Are those worth a look?

I never played that series - what was censored in that game? Religious themes?

would love to know a what happened summary to it's localization one day, seems like those who worked at Sega of America back then are too embarrassed or don't wanna bring up bad memories to speak up about it

No, the blood and gore were censored while the previous games had minor ''censorship''(I feel that Ma Belle Peche from XS1 is more fucked in the ''censored'' version)

If you're that far into the series then yeah, go ahead and play them. Just make sure you go with the fan translation.

Oh I dropped the Cold Steel series after the first entry, so I'm definitely way behind, but I'd rather be confused than keep going with that highschool setting.

Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere was absolutely cut down to an absolute minimum, only one path out of it's original six(!) endings was kept for the US release, and all ingame anime cutscenes (and thus, the whole plot) were removed because they didn't want to spend the money or time to localize them.

Akumajou Densetsu

When exported for NES as Dracula's Curse, it got mangled as a thing that makes an otherwise great game and IMHO the besto of the NES trilogy a chore:

Enemies hit harder
Spawn points feel cheaper
Grant... is pathetic or otherwise situational no matter which version you play, but in USA, rather than a dagger throw, he was given a butter knife
Alucard eats thru your heart supply faster in USA
Enemies that only appear in a second loop appear in the first one
Bosses are spongier
It may be me, but some candles get crappier item drops on USA
And lastly and more infurating...DIE TO DRACULA TO MIGHT AS WELL RETURN TO THE BEGGINING OF THE STAGE BITCH

IDK what companies got with japanese games being fairer, ¿the rental phobia was already real?
