AMA I'm a professional driver by trade AMA

Ask Me Anything
It can be very scary and it is a dangerous job, but if you really stop and think about it, slipping on a wet floor, or falling off of a ladder can kill you or many other things you don't really think about. This is not a job for everybody and I would never pretend that it is. I feel like its good experience to travel and see new things, but just be smart and beware. You can find trouble anywhere if you look for it.

I've driven coast to coast which is about as long as it can be. I hated the long travel side at first, but it grows on you. There are good home eveyday gigs too, but you just have to find whats best for you if you get into it.
I'm sure it takes a very specific sort of person to stick with it, but I've always been led to believe it's a very rewarding experience for anyone who it's right for. Would you say it's your job preference or would you rather move onto something else given the opportunity? If yes what would that be?

As a college drop out I couldn't be happier doing anything else, but I already knew the unspoken American way is selling out, now with age I am finally understanding why. While I do enjoy it it does pay the bills too, and it would be much nicer to do it solely because I want to and not because I have to.

Most boring trip you can remember?
Taking in so much through the eyes every day doesn't really get boring to me, but I guess if I am running the same route back and forth that can get old, or the geographic settings that I do not enjoy as much like flat ground and pine treee as far as the eye can see can leave much to be desired compared to whats out there.
Where did you buy your scorpion jacket?
Don't have one lol I have never seen that movie, but I hear good things.

How does the career treat you? would you recommend it to others?
I like it, but I have always enjoyed driving cars. I would recommend it if a person felt comfortable to try it. I would just stress the seriousness and severity that comes with it. If you make a mistake you can go to federal prison.
What are your max number of hours you're allowed to drive in one day?
You already know the answer to that, but 11 hours.

For CDL Testing/Training is there any focus on backing into dock doors and/or backing up blind siding? Mainly curious since I'm a Jockey and end up backing up CDL drivers when they can't manage.

On a random side note that I just thought of, do CDL drivers also tend to talk down on Jockey drivers? I always get blamed by them when they damage a trailer and we have to show them the video footage of them doing it before they withdraw their claims :P

I can't speak for Hawaii or Alaska, but 47 states want you to straight back, offset back, and 90 degree back (doesn't have to be blind side, but they set out cones and if you touch a cone or cross the line the cone makes you fail. South Carolina replaces the offset with a parallel parking maneuver (bless).

I don't really care for what most other drivers have to say about anything, but most yard guys are cool especially if the spot is hell and they'll relieve you of the chore and drop it for you.

I thought it would be informative.
