Gamecube If you ask me, the Gamecube deserved the L... But at least it tried. A little ramble about the 6th gen console war.

  1. Discs (say what you want but mini discs held less data and meant no dvd compatibility. They also meant more expense in manufacturing for Big N)
Imagine being so paranoid about piracy that you end up making a product that literally cripples your own system in the process.
At least the XBox HAD DVD support. I could rant about how they locked that feature away (a very Microsoft move), but Nintendo didn’t even give it the time of day. And when your competitor is actively proving why a DVD drive is good idea, I don’t know why you wouldn’t take a step back and at least make it an add on at launch, you feel?

Yeah, while the focus on gaming is touted by "hard-core gamers" reality makes it pretty obvious that those secondary features can really sell a system.

It almost felt a bit like they used the mini discs to give the platform some uniqueness, but standing out by doing something insane is a good way to get ignored, as I learnt in high school.

It's ok! Everyone have opinions and I respect that even if Game Cube was my childhood, Nintendo did a lot of dumb choices with it that sabotaged it!

I have to say tho
SHOUT OUTS TO GAME CUBE'S INDIGO COLOUR! Gotta be my fav colour

FOR REAL! Such a Dumb decision!
That's why Games like Tales of Symphonia was in 2 GC Discs ::apollo

Still wish Nintendo kept the indigo color scheme.

Like yeah, they're the Red of the trio with PS and Xbox being blue and green, but indigo just felt different and then they just swerved to stark white for two gens.
Modern technology after 2010 is so boring! They all ditch colours 😩
They are all either White or Black... and still only nintendo sells colourful consoles
For limited time editions

When my friend at university said "I'm bringing my lunchbox," we all knew he was bringing his GC along.

and the nostalgia needle moves up to the Wii era. People with a soft spot for the Gamecube will be lumped in with bizzare weirdos like myself who have a soft spot for the Dreamcast.
Except the GameCube has a bunch of good games that weren't released on other systems. Any time I go to play a Dreamcast game there's usually a better version of the game on a different system. The Wii is silly and gimmicky. There's maybe a small handful of Wii games I would actually bother with.

I agree with the op, the cube deserved what it got and I think this is the reason the wii got a full retrocompatibility (controls and memory slots) on the first version and revisions, I am happy with my wii being a smaller NGC.

The Gamecube library may have been limited, but every game on it was a certified banger.
I wouldn't say that it lost in the console wars of that era, Nintendo very neatly carved out a niche with its family friendly first party games. Everyone that had a PS2 or an Xbox almost always had a Gamecube as well, because where else could you play Pokemon, Mario, and Zelda?

I don’t think “every game on it was a certified banger” is the hill you want to die on. But I concede: it had a lot of bangers. And, this is a big thing going for it, they all felt like they fit together. In one big family. Mario had never felt more aesthetically connected. Metroid was more alive than ever and paired well with Star Fox. Zelda brought the epic scale with it. And the whole system just has this vibe of liquids, like water.

Also, a lot of people had it for the Nintendo IP, yeah, but also because it was so cheap. Nintendo slashed that price so much because they were desperate, so GameCube BUNDLES could run only $100 at times. Wild.

its the same problem the switch and switch 2 have IMO.

The stuff Nintendo develops themselves for it is OUTSTANDING, some serious must play stuff!.....
......
.......
But 3rd party stuff? Absolutely not. More often than not the worst way to play em'.

This doesn't sound TOO bad on paper, but having to pay hundreds of dollars for a system only to play like 10 games max is NOT something people are willing to do, the Switch 2 is actually doing bangers sales wise, but you can still see this reflected in how almost EVERY 3RD party port to the system so far has been a financial failure for their respective companies. Playstation, Xbox, and PC have always p much been the objectively superior option for third party stuff barring the Wii with stuff like it's Resident Evil 4 port and the Wiiware stuff, and people simply flock to them instead.

I love the GameCube but it just didn't have as many bangers as the PS2 for my moneu. It had some AMAZING games though. The Zeldas on it are top notch, Metroid Prime, Double Dash, a four player version of Nightfire without needing a multitap... lots of great stuff.

I probably would take the GameCube over the Xbox. But the PS2 just had SO much stuff. Viewtiful Joe and RE4 would have been great arguing points but they ended up on the PS2. Even if there are points to be made about port quality, they aren't make or break differences. Tough to compete with a console that has the Silent Hill, Grand Theft Auto, Tekken, Final Fantasy, Star Wars Battlefront... the list goes on for a long time lol
