Like anyone who watched JP when they were kids, I was absolutely mesmerized by it.

I even remember asking my dad where this magical place was, already trying to work out how to make it there on my own.

It truly is a great movie, and a groundbreaking achievement in the history of cinema.

Watching it again as an adult, though, sucks the magic right out of the experience, and makes it seem reckless rather than daring — your grown-up brain destroys it with the same detached glee with which it burns the entirety of Harry Potter to the ground. You just see the wires and flaws now!

But I don't want to slam a movie I love (I'm not a YouTuber, after all >:D), just to invite discussion on how utterly fucked do you think we would be if we went ahead with this... because there's no doubt that we would get fucked, the only question is how much.

My guess is that we would probably be fine as long as the animals retain "petting zoo" sizes and behaviors, but then we would be smashing bombs with sledgehammers (so to speak) — I just don't see a moat or electrical fence stopping a living, breathing tank with a vengeance and that's aware of premium dishes it had never seen just hovering outside its enclosure.

Keeping them all fed would probably be a logistical nightmare, too (without letting them freely tear into each other, that is, but I think that would go against the spirit of reviving ancient monsters in limited numbers).

*Stares back at wall of text* Oooof! That's some overanalyzing xD

Thoughts?

Unless they were under mind control or in some other way entirely tamed, there would be absolutely no way to have a "real" Jurassic Park. Even if they stayed smaller sizes, I think they would be a cause of destruction.

I want to know if this would destroy the entire human race, honestly. Sure, maybe a T-Rex can't get across the ocean, but anything that can fly certainly would. All that would be needed would be for an enclosure to be destroyed (and yes, building said enclosure would be near impossible) and then they would have free reign. The creatures in the original Jurassic Park couldn't fly to my memory, so maybe this wouldn't be a worry, but it's still something to think about.

Food chain disruption is real too. You'd be losing people attempting to feed them, and you would need absurd amounts of food anyway. And then, of course, how the hell do you make this a PARK? I mean, I guess to some extent, that's what the movie's plot it, but in real life? There's no chances whatsoever.

So my answer: VERY fucked.

I learned about the expenses of feeding exotic animals from watching Tiger King XD. So yeah the one goat was not even a snack lol

Anything flying will immediately get killed by a rifle with a .308. The real question is HOW will they breathe considering oxygen levels were different back then.

Now imagine if ALL of RGT was in JP, would we survive? ::thinking

Nice point!

Pterodactyls would be the end game for us — they can not only just fly those massive wings anywhere they want, but feed themselves en-route to wherever they'd feel like going (they ate fish, after all).

Hell, as a species, we barely even survived encounters with the massive Haast's Eagle (which could kill humans with ease).

It's certainly fascinating.

I feel like dinosaurs in real life wouldn't actually be both resistant to and faster than bullets like they're usually portrayed in movies and games. They wouldn't be too different from regular wild life, which humans have been killing for thousands of years. If we could take down mammoths and sabretooth tigers with wood and stones, we could kill dinosaurs with everything we have available nowadays.
All the issues from reviving them would be logistical and bureaucratic to the point where it wouldn't be worth doing it. Kind of like how we can technically already clone living beings since the 90s (Dolly the sheep) but we don't do it because of the nightmare of potential legal, ethical and moral issues along with not being worth the resources that go into it compared to simply having animals breed. It would also be actually impossible to revive dinosaurs in large enough numbers and make them reproduce fast enough to were it would cause any kind of disaster. The first successful T-rex would likely be a one-off or a very small litter, not capable of just starting to age rapidly and mass-reproduce in such a short time, nevermind breaking free and being immune to weaponry. If anything, going by various attempts at trying to revive extinct animals, they would probably just die shortly after, anyway, sadly.
I would still totally do it if I could, though, I want to see dinosaurs run around and do cool stuff

If Jurassic Park was real, it either ends with isolated island of dinosaurs or catastrophic dinosaur invasion. Most likely, we couldn't afford to feed that cloned dinosaurs at all. Anyway, that kind of attraction couldn't work in real life.

No... we won't escape carnivorous dinosaurs like raptors or smaller, especially these guys...

Have you read the book? If not you should! As great as the movie is, the book is even better, in my opinion, and also better explains everything (as books tend to).

I don't recall any glaring issues with the movie that ruins the magic, as you say, unless you are referring to some of the more dated special effects. But even those are easy to ignore unless you are focusing on them, especially with the amazing John Williams score (provided you are not watching on a phone) which transcends the entire viewing experience!
In terms of narrative, the original movie does an excellent job making everything seem believable. Can't say the same for the rest of the films though 😄
I guess the only unbelievable part I can think of in the original movie is the T-Rex deus ex machina at the end. But hey, we get an iconic shot out of it!

Haven't read the book, but I probably should — it's been on my list for geological ages.

By "ruining the magic" I meant stuff like the dinosaurs not breaking out at all unless something goes deeply wrong — I don't think that's quite how it'd play it out in reality ^^U

Oh you must read it! Especially since Spielberg's version of the story isn't 1:1, so its not like you'll know exactly whats going to happen while reading. You're in for a ride!

If you want a more grounded take on what a Dinosaur Park would be like I'd recommend the manga Dinosaur Sanctuary. It goes into a lot of aspects of Dino upkeep you wouldn't really think of. It's a fantastic read. It's written by Itaru Kinoshita and has paleontologist Dr Shin-ichi Fujiwara as a research consultant.

You ever want to see and old T-Rex? Read Dinosaur Sanctuary
