The 6 gen of consoles ( Dreamcast - Gamecube - PS2 - Xbox ) games have a really special setting where it's always colorfull and often in a tropical setting.

even if the story, narrative is dark, there was always beautifull sceneries with island, tropical paradise and so on.

with the arrival of the 7 gen, games started to look more morose, more dark and gritty, realistic but depressing.

anyone else miss this era ?

I think this reflects the realities of the time. The sixth generation of video game consoles is like the 1980s for pop culture, especially for music. Wild colors, explosive hues, catchy tunes. Everything is loud, bright, flashing, and shimmering.

And then came the gloomy ’90s. Bringing with them gloomy grunge. And “bright and cheerful” music is practically extinct.

I think colours fading out of game started in the middle of the 6th gen but the 7th was when they really started making games with weird filters.

I would have to agree with you there, the vibrant style of those games proved to be quite memorable. I do find a lot of the games now really bland. I forget where I saw it but I do remember seeing an image of a couple of modern games put together(all with the over the shoulder camera style) and all the images might as well have been from the same game. On the topic of games with a tropical setting from that era, clearly there is one series that deserves a special mention.

"Summer games" or something.

They just feel good.
