I LOVE THE VITA FOR IT'S ANIME SLOP!!!!!!!!!!

It's interesting to consider that many of these games found their home on the Vita due to lower dev costs, apparently?

I mean, it's still one mean machine of a device, a pocket PS3 as far as I understand, and the PS3 was hell to develop for, so was the Vita more straightforward or something?

It was also one heck of a port machine. I don't know how much of the anime game output is really slop, but I bet there are a lot of gems in there.

The Vita definitely seemed like it had a lot of quirks when it came to PS3 ports (many western ones have numerous issues despite a few solid conversions). When it comes to middle market titles though the ports tended to be far easier because the games weren't really pushing the PS3 to begin with. It wasn't uncommon for many Japanese games to have PS3/Vita/PS4 versions up until 2017 or so. The games would typically be developed around the PS3 since it was the biggest userbase at the time and then it was easily upscaled in resolution and maybe framerate for PS4 and then downported with some minor performance or visual downgrades on Vita.

These are typically games that would require far more extensive changes to port down to run on a 3DS, so if you wanted to court a handheld audience (and handhelds were always huge in Japan) it was probably more or less a no brainer to just bring em to Vita.

That makes a lot of sense. There would be far less compromises to make something portable on the Vita than on the 3DS. And yet, not a single mainline MH game on the Vita... thanks Nintendo!

God, yea... Truly a shame that Frontier G is the only MonHun that ever made it to the Vita, but of course as a Japan exclusive. Portable 3rd had an HD port on PS3 that would have probably looked amazing on Vita, but Capcom had fully jumped ship from Sony's ecosystem, for whatever reason.

I've heard everything from the Monster Hunter team hating Sony's use of the Ad-Hoc Party app for global online play to general cost issues but we never really knew for sure why that specific franchise jumped ship to Nintendo. Always felt strange since Capcom still had a good working relationship with Sony so it isn't like they had distanced themselves entirely or anything. Maybe they just saw the early writing on the wall that the Vita was gonna be an instant flop and pivoted early. I still feel like they'd have ported Portable 3rd HD to the thing in Japan if nothing else though.

Thankfully we had Toukiden, Freedom Wars, God Eater and Soul Sacrifice to fill that void as best as we could. Taking this as an opportunity to remind everyone that Freedom Wars Remastered comes out in a few days for PS4/PS5/Switch/PC!!! Super duper excited for one of my favorite games to get a second chance at the success it so rightfully deserves.

I truly hope it succeeds, and that brings Soul Sacrifice Delta to PC as well. The Vita had some very cool MH-likes like you mentioned. Capcom's excuse for switching platforms back then was that they always targeted the largest install base possible, which makes sense from a business sense but still feels like a bit of a betrayal considering the series blossomed on Sony systems.

Portable Third is amazing, much better than Tri (and arguably better than 3U for lacking that horrible underwater gimmick).

I admit I'm a bit of a sucker for underwater (I played Great Sword in gen 3 tho so it wasn't as frustrating for me), but I also preferred P3rd overall. Part of that is me just being such a PSP fanatic but part of it was also because I have some nostalgia doing some *extremely negligible but at the time neat* work on the fan translation because I was friends with a couple people high up on that project. First time I ever got to really peel back the curtain and see what a pain in the ass doing literally anything with translation, localization, programming etc really was.

But I like the roster, the color palette, the home village and the way things like invasion worked in that game on top of the general nostalgia. Still holding out hope that one day whatever producer on that series has been stopping the release of remasters gets overruled and we get some rereleases! I still return to Freedom Unite and P3rd on my Vita but man oh man it would be great to have official servers to hunt on or even just official HD versions to grind out a platinum trophy for.

That's for sure! I've been a GS main from the start (my friend objected, I did anyway and learned on my own. I consider myself reasonable, but when I get pigheaded I really get pigheaded).

Started with P3rd, then went to MHFU (P3rd I finished, MHFU I didn't, though), then 4U and GU. I started late, World was already around, but I decided to start from classic and don't regret it (still prefer it). My modern favorite is Rise, because it feels like a modern GU remix kind of deal.

Uploading Vita games is a crack in pandora's floodgate. It is genuine cut-off as to what can be considered "retro".
I am not lying when I say that half of Vita library are censored ecchi games. The other half are uninventive jrpgs & pixelated indie games.

It's thanks to PSVita that I started playing Hatsune Miku Project Diva X back in 2017.

As you can see from my profile pic, I still haven't recovered.

Also, it had domino effect. On VITA they once gave out Virtue's Last Reward for free to all PS Plus subscribers.
It was my first Visual Novel ever.
Today, 12 years later, I'm an avid Ace Attorney fan.

So, indeed, long live Playstation VITA! This console changed my taste so much

Anime slop is really what kept the Vita alive if you think about it! (for as long as it limped along after the horrendous class action lawsuit it faced for false advertising in the west). If Sony had treated the console better, as in more mainstream titles or even ports (imagine if they'd bothered with remastered versions of the GTA PSP games?) I think that whole generation could have ended differently.

I agree with the poster above "Stookymalarkey" (Tried to Quote them; not sure if it worked as I am still somewhat Forum illiterate so my apologies if I failed and or the formatting is garbage) mentioning that you can like a genre/sub genre and know that you will be judged/viewed differently immediately because of the social expectation/stereotype associated with that specific genre/sub genre.

"Anime" has become a label slapped on games of a certain art style regardless of the diverse and varied types of gameplay inherent in each title etc. All in all though I am very happy that MOST of the Vita Anime stuff is slowly being ported/moved to switch, ps5, and or steam (not much xbox love but oh well!). I always hate to see games "Trapped" on previous hardware (I was so pleased when Danganronpa was moved to Switch as I could share it with friends who loved Phoenix Wright but had never had any interest in owning a Sony Console) especially if the hardware was handicapped (as in the lawsuit etc case with Vita) leading to many people missing out on titles they may have otherwise enjoyed.

Anyway on that note about ports for otherwise trapped games hope everyone who tries it enjoys Freedom Wars Remastered! I am excited to play that again when I get a chance.

Y'all just will never stop calling this stuff "anime slop", huh? I wouldn't be surprised if it's a trend started by some kinda youtuber or whatever

Looking at my PS Vita cartridges, I can call three of them "nonsense that I like." Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax, a multi-crossover fighting game with characters that originated from books. Arcana Heart 3, which is similar but not based on any IP. Persona 4, which is one of my favorite console RPGs, even though I know it's flawed.

I spent dozens of hours enjoying Lumines and Stardew Valley on the Vita. The console helped me get into Thomas was Alone, and a touchscreen edition of Lemmings.

My experience with Code Realize could've been better, but it's a visual novel that I respect. It's amusing and absurd, but it has an external conflict, and it discusses difficult topics. It doesn't apologize for its female gaze, or its shoujo demographic storytelling. I also bought the otome game Amnesia Memories, but I wasn't sure whether I liked it.

All this reminds me of an attitude I had around 1996 -- a time when I might have said "I don't care for Marvel and DC Comics. I read Bone, and Thieves and Kings." Likewise, I had a dismissive attitude around 2003. I was a recent college graduate who was reluctant to admit liking Naruto, since I'd already read the Kaiji Kawaguchi series Eagle. I should have reminded myself that it's all comics, mostly noticed by fellow nerds.

Look man, when I hacked my Vita and gave Senran Kagura a chance, I legit was shocked by how in depth and well tought out the combat was, completly took me by surprise!

I'm really dense, like really really dense, like once a girl was outwardly flirting with me and I didn't even notice it until some one said she was interested in me...
If you liked the Senran Kagura games check Valkyrie Drive, it's on both Vita and Steam, part of one of those audiovisual projects, so it has an anime and mangas, really good shit.

I loved this game's story
I didn't expect it to be this dark

My main issue is the framerate on Vita (Senran Kagura ran much smoother).

Personally didn't notice performance issues in Valkyrie Drive, maybe cuz i always run my Vita at max clocks.
