I love how video game titles had the name of the console in the title

Either with Super for the Super NES, 64 for Nintendo 64 but also when they tried to make the name GB (like Metal Gear Solid Ghost Babel) or DS (Advance Wars Dual Strikes). It kinda stopped around the 7th Generation.

Do you have clever examples for these?

I especially like when DS games would "hide" it with titles like "Bleach Dark Souls" instead of just calling it Bleach DS.

Ironically, games slowed down on these console naming conventions around the time the internet became the standard way we'd shop and look things up. That "64" really helps searching "Super Mario." But so many games started just using the name of the first entry in the series, like "Mortal Kombat" or "Sonic the Hedgehog." Just odd.

Perhaps because Star Fox 64 isn't actually a sequel but more like a reboot and that Lylat is the system the game is set in.

I do like that title simply because it sounds like Star Wars as well (one of the inspirations of the franchise with Thunderbirds).

Megaman X confused people as Megaman had roman numbers in the titles (until 8 I think). I understand that X is a different subseries but before Internet it was confusing.

To be frank, 3D is not a thing of 3DS, and it mostly works without the 3DS tie in when the sequel came out on Wii U, 3D Land/World are just very unique 3D mario games, so I would this in the "isn't" category myself. Lot of 3DS games have 3D in the title but because they have 3D not because 3DS as much, very gray area.

I also have to say I liked the cheeky DS game names. Resident Evil Deadly Silence, Guilty Gear Dust Strikers, the list is sizable and fun.

To be frank, 3D is not a thing of 3DS, and it mostly works without the 3DS tie in when the sequel came out on Wii U, 3D Land/World are just very unique 3D mario games, so I would this in the "isn't" category myself. Lot of 3DS games have 3D in the title but because they have 3D not because 3DS as much, very gray area.

3D was also used back when games went into the third dimension (like Duke Nukem 3D or Bubsy 3D).

The funny thing is when it's actually the third instalment that has gone 3D.

I heard it was called "rebranding" so they make a clean slate for a newer audience, acting as if nothing existed before (to the detriment of older fans) to prevent confusion.

Imagine if God of War PSP4 was called "God of War VIII". There's also a reason why around the 4th - 5th entry in a franchise they tend to drop the numbering (like with the Alien starting from Covenant or even Yoshi's Island being internally called Super Mario Bros. 5).

Even Megadrive titles rarely put "Mega" in their title.

Yeah unfortunately that feature wasn't used that much too. I like that title though, cheeky indeed

I actually got my DS late enough that Portrait of Ruin was the hotness (and also a benchmark of good flashcart SD card, it took years to find out it was likely very subtle anti piracy or such at work that is now more universally fixed at least in Twilightmenu if I know right) - But I kinda missed Dawn of Sorrow.On same topic, I did like Harmony of Despair on PS3 a lot, so "Castlevania HD" - lol.

I remember that Phantasy Star Portable is called as such because it makes the acronym PSP.

Sadly neither Portable Ops nor Peace Walker tried this (despite the letter P being used in both).

It's harder to make a full name with P S and P in it I think.
