I don't like the console UI of the recent generations

I think it's plausible that once they optimize the bios menu where it won't take too long to start up the game console via commercially-optimized SSDs, we may likely get a maximalized UI menu - start jingle included.

I'll still never understand though why the start up jingle for both PS5 and Switch 2 are only when powering them up for setup for the first time..

Its a shame because the new-age UI don't really have any enhanced function or ease-of-use over stuff like XMB or Blades, but they also have no real visual flair or style. It is just the worst of both worlds, truly an odd direction to go in. I guess that's typical of games themselves too, something about UI design went very wrong in the late 2010s. It's all very homogeneous and boring now and I have a feeling that most people would gladly accept a little more jank in their UIs if it was super memorable for one reason or another.

The Switch UI is the best currently. I don't need things to be complicated or fancy. I just need it to work and be user friendly.

I hate the changes in UI from PS4 to PS5. The PS5 UI actively pisses me off when I use it. The PS3 had the best UI of the Sony consoles, but the PS4's UI wasn't bad at all. PS5 is just awful though.

Xbox UI has ALWAYS been bad. Just tacky, cluttered, and trashy looking. They always look like storefront UIs. I want to play games, not buy things.

I prefer no UI.
Turn on the system, and it immediately boots into the game. Thats what I want.
The good old days when things were simple. UIs should really only exist for hacked systems where you're going to do multiple things like using different emulators.

I feel like I’m one of the only people in the world who doesn’t like maximalism and likes minimalism more when it’s done right. Off-topic, but when Cracker Barrel changed its design to be more minimalist, I actually really liked it and didn’t understand the hate. But above all I do prefer no UI for consoles by default. Like, I’m there to play a game, I don’t need any extra stuff.

It’s so weird that the psp came out in 2004 given how timeless the UI still feels, so simple and straightforward.

I think UI needs some personality to help memory retention, if a UI is boring and dull then it’s a lot easier for me to forget where everything is especially if I hop between ecosystems like I used to do.

Personally the biggest crime was the loss of ps4 themes.

I miss the PS3 themes specifically because you can share custom ones without hacking the console (for those who care about that) and also can mix-match some of the features. PS4, unless you customize your own theme, yoiu can't choose the colour flair, you can't use the music from one with another theme. Very constrictive.

DSi and PSP both had nice working ones.

PSP and therefore PS3 (the latter basically recycled a ltitle from PSP, let's face it) were AMAZING.
I was surprised to know that even the PSX (the PS2 model) and some Sony TV models had the XMB.

That's simple on paper yet really effective.

Why did they drop it for the PS4?
