Nintendo, with assistance from the FBI and Dutch authorities, has taken down multiple ROM sites through legal action and domain seizures, including LoveROMs, ROM Universe, Vimm's Lair, and the recent crackdown in July 2025 targeting NSW2U and several other sites distributing Nintendo Switch ROMs. These efforts are part of Nintendo's strategy to combat piracy by targeting ROM hosting sites rather than emulators themselves, aiming to protect intellectual property and the legal marketplace.

Examples of Sites Targeted:
  • LoveROMs: Shut down after a 2018 lawsuit filed by Nintendo.

  • EmuParadise: Voluntarily ceased operations in 2018 after Nintendo's legal actions against similar sites.

  • ROM Universe: Closed in 2019 following similar legal action.

  • Vimm's Lair: A well-known site that was asked to remove many games in June 2024 as part of action by Nintendo, Sega, Lego, and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA).

  • NSW2U: A significant site for Nintendo Switch ROMs seized by the FBI and Dutch authorities in July 2025.
Why Nintendo Takes Action:
  • Protecting Intellectual Property:
Nintendo owns the copyrights for its games and trademarks and argues that ROM sites are a form of commercial copyright infringement.

  • Combating Piracy:
Downloading ROMs for commercial games is illegal in most cases, and Nintendo aims to protect its legal market.

  • Protecting Developers:
Nintendo believes these actions are a necessary step to protect developers and the legal marketplace for games.
Method of Takedown:
  • Legal Action:
Nintendo files lawsuits against the operators of ROM sites, leading to their closure.

  • Domain Seizures:
Law enforcement agencies like the FBI, often working with Nintendo, execute seizure warrants to take control of domain names used by these sites.

  • Targeting Hosting Sites:
Nintendo's strategy focuses on disrupting the distribution of ROMs by targeting the websites that host them, not necessarily the emulators themselves.

I think that's the only somewhat understandable reason why they'd get in troubles.

Leaking means breaching into privacy so I can see the legal trouble it could bring.

Vimm's lair is still up dude. It's just you can't download games of Nintendo's own IPs offa there anymore.
I literally got Mario Galaxy 2 there...

I forgot but when and where was TotK leaked by the way? Wasn't it on Reddit?

Nintendo trying to fight piracy is like the unwinnable battle option in Half-Life. You might get some arrests here and there, but as long as they continue to offer a shitty service to the public, piracy will stay strong whitin any new Nintendo product.

And even other product in general, PC especially since a crack is often available near the release of the game.

Maybe for rom hosting sites a login/secret link and not having Switch nor 3DS files may be the safest bet to keep it.

The only way to stop Nintendo from messing with pirates is pirating their building so they cannot go to work!!!!

Me so smartz me fear myself!!!! ::omgdoom lolol

To be fair, one thing is to host roms and another is to go around promoting a site while asking for money

Also, when given a warning one should take it and let it go. I mean, at least when nintendo DO warn to "stop or i will sue your ass"

- Do not publicly leak stuff

Which sites did that btw?

I didn't give EmuParadise much attention outside of getting games but I clearly remember they had a Donate button.
