I don't really see much of a reason to only play modern or retro games. I bounce back and forth all the time. I also feel like people vastly overestimate how "complete" retro games were. I see this sentiment posted all the time, and it's just a myth that retro gamers feel the need to prove their superiority.
There were plenty of games with bugs in them, and some could have been much better experiences if they could be patched. Developers were still pushed hard to put out a product in a limited time frame. Game development is hard. Sure you can cherry pick games that largely work fine, but it's not representative of retro games as a whole. Buggy games were bashed on back then just as they are now. Also game patches have existed for a long time now. PC games in the 90's could, in fact, be patched. And some were. Don't act like things were perfect back then.
If anything patching makes it so more games can be good. Just play what you want and be happy. There are plenty of reasons to dislike the current mainstream, but there are still good and even great games being released today. This includes mainstream and indie games. Only looking back in the past breaks your brain just as much as only sticking with modern.
