How much do you like story in games?

Not necessarily story, but vibe. If a game hits a good, specific atmosphere, I can get into it. Even if the story on paper is rubbish and/or the gameplay is rudimentary.
Evergrace comes to mind in particular.

Don't really care about the story but games can excel at dialogue/acting and cinematography. So if those aspects are good, that's all I need. For example. the story in The Last of Us is alright, your zombie apocalypse with fungus but what really carried that game was the performance and the dialogue. Same thing with Mass Effect.

Cinematography, editing, voice acting, even things like environments, level design and lighting. They all can be used for storytelling purposes. The best games combine all of these things for a thematic purpose. I feel like not using these elements in a cohesive way to tell a story is basically wasting the potential of the medium.

If it's something like Visual Novel personally VERY.

If anything it's a make or break for those.

But if it's something like Call of Duty instead, as long as i feel the hype it's good enough for me i guess, and boy does Advanced Warfare, the Modern Warfare and the Infinity Warfare scratch that itch for me (i personally don't really f with Black Ops tbh, while it IS good, it definitely warranted a different kind of impression than the other series)

I like a good story but I also value how valuable the gameplay
Playing a game with terrible gameplay but with an amazing story really sours the experience and makes me feel i'm forcing myself to go through!

It really depends what kind of game it is,

RPGs with Bad story is basically a lost case

It depends? Counter strike an amazing shooter hardly has any story i bet more than few thousand players bothered reading the description of terrorist/counter terrorist factions like the SAS the elite crew etc there is no story it's just "plant bomb shoot people" or "rescue hostage/camp hostage shoot people expect terrorists are big time campers so spam flash you noob" despite the lack of a story counter strike makes up for it by sheer gameplay.

Another of my favorite games is sudden strike an old WW2 RTS game that prioritize combat over base building , the game doesn't have a story nor characters all you command are nameless soldiers fighting each other there is no narrative at all.... Yet it's gameplay if you can get the hang of it is pretty fun save for when you have to put up with line of sight but removing fog of war solves it so we are back on track.

GAMES are a collection of small systems whether it's gameplay or story or graphics all should work together to create the best experience possible , i like it most when the story is used in gameplay like Final Fantasy 4 using job system from FF3 to grant each character a job that plays a role in the story like kain being a dragoon or Cecil switching from dark knight to paladin an important part of the plot but also used as gameplay to enable the player permanent healing (yes i know cecil can't heal for shit but it's something)

Some games don't need a story just a setting to get things running and you are good to go some games do need a story and other games would benefit from a story and some OTHER OTHER game would benefit if it had an actually good story.

About as equal as gameplay and the rest.

All games just need to be FUN, even with garbage story, gameplay and the rest, if they still can make me enjoy them in the end then all is forgiven.

i need good action

that said, i REALLY love stories. alllll kinds of stories. some of my favourite stories have been from video games.

BUT, if the combat/gameplay is ass (in my eyes) then i just cant be assed to play it. a prime recent example for me is Baldur's Gate 3. I finally gave up on trying to get into that game after giving it a fourth try Lol

im a big fan of looking at character backgrounds and collecting story pieces etc, so i guess i cant live without it? back when i could play games all day i was pretty good at games which meant gameplay came first. but even then i would look up character stories, or read their bios if it was possible. so back then it was "seeing stories is nice, but i could do without it" which then turned into "hey stories are really cool, i enjoy seeing great writing and cool parts"

Not at all. I like it for giving context and helping you get attached to the game, or as an opportunity to have some fun scenes, but besides that I’m 100% gameplay all the way.
