Tbh I have NEVER been inmersed in a video game story, even noticing how good it is. So just having the plot as a way to introduce mechanics or characters without it beeing too deep or important is my go to.

Don't really care about the story but games can excel at dialogue/acting and cinematography. So if those aspects are good, that's all I need. For example. the story in The Last of Us is alright, your zombie apocalypse with fungus but what really carried that game was the performance and the dialogue. Same thing with Mass Effect.
