How long have you been using forums for?

early 2000s was active on SegaXtreme, EmuParadise, GameFAQs, Racketboy, VGCollect, Hardcore Gaming 101, Sega Saturn UK, Retromags, today I'm primarily on Giantbomb, HowLongToBeat and Retrogametalk/CDR.

Does anyone remember those weird "authentication" methods some forums used to have? I remember having to go to IRC once to tell the admins something like "Hi, fellow humans. I'm also real" XD
I legitimately got stuck behind those. The admins for a lot of forums never replied back to me. :(

One me and meme page comunnity i was part did as retalation for getting banned from the page, sadly history repeated and it died

My answer is sadly kinda lame because I was a forum lurker and not a user. This changed in 2024. I thought forums seemed harsh back in 2012 so I didn’t wanna contribute to any of the conversations but now I feel i should’ve taken the plunge anyways.
Same, I have been a lurker since I started web-browsing, and I only started using forums last year, specifically this one

I've lurked on forums since the 90s. The first one I remember being active on was some anime forum in the early 2000s. Can't remember the name for the life of me, but it was never particularly big. Not too long after I got into the Redwall series of books and joined The Long Patrol Forums, which was a forum for discussing the series. I posted there for quite a few years, but my interest in the series waned and I moved on. I just tried to go on the forums to see what my join date was, but they seem to be gone now. Otherwise I've made a handful of posts on random forums over the years, but mostly just lurked. I joined here for the repository but took a look at the forums and it seemed like a cool place, so I started posting. Been really enjoying myself so far, you folks are cool people. ?

Do image boards count? They're kinda like forums in a way but I was a lurker on 4chan back in 2013. However I didn't get into Forums til like 2017 on Newgrounds. But even then, I was a lot more Social Media focused. These days is very different since Forums seems so much better for what I want when it comes to talking about things. Its very exciting to be around a very active community though!

Early 2002 is when I first got unsupervised internet access (totally had no adverse effects on my mental health lol) and joined a big Final Fantasy forum that I frequented for the next three years or so. There were another couple of gaming or Japanese pop-culture related forums I joined for the next couple of years and I had my own one to keep in touch with close online friends before social media became more of a thing, but until I joined this site last year I had completely abandoned forums since 2008.

2007 (I was 13 at the time). It was the Mayhem Festival board. The people from there eventually migrated to an unofficial board once the official board shut down, and I've been on there since 2010.
All in total, I've been talking to some of the same people on that board for 18 years now. Met some of them IRL too.

I think I started on AceCombat.net's forums on '02ish? If photobucket didn't lock down then eat my gallery, I would use some of my old Signatures form there.

then I bounced around some really tiny anime forums for a while still using AC.net until it got bought by some of the users and turned into AceCombatSkies forums, where it would sour community wise.

Let's see... I believe the first time I actually used a forum website was in like... 2003 with Gaia. Spent a good portion of my life on there. Started the chatrooms on Yahoo two years before that, though. Main reason I use RGT is nostalgia for that forums experience.

I've never used forums until about 3 months ago.
I used to be just a lurker but I decided to become a user since I thought it would be fun.
(And also because I wanted to improve my social skills)

I started using forums in the mid-2000s, as I started using the Internet and found out about RPG Maker, so it was good places to find help and resources.
Well, in the end, I stayed to interact with the community way more than to make games.

I also dabbled in RP and wrestling forums, but my "main" one was on RPG Maker. It's a pity the community was siphoned by the Discord server, nowadays, the forum is completely dead.

It has been years since I used a forum regularly, so I'm thankful for this one.

Does anyone remember those weird "authentication" methods some forums used to have? I remember having to go to IRC once to tell the admins something like "Hi, fellow humans. I'm also real" XD
My said "main" forum tried that kind of system once, conditioning what parts of the forum you could access to. The idea was to keep some of the making resources accessible only to people who were really part of the forum and discourage "hit-and-run", so to speak.

It's already debatable how much sense it makes to restrict the access to user-created resources for something like RPG Maker, given that we weren't shy about ripping from commercial games but even to those who agreed about the idea, the execution was crap. People had to jump through hoops to access the bare minimum of the forum and were justifiably wondering what was the point to sign up when you could even be restricted to only introductions and the flood section in a forum about making games.

It was quickly abandoned, thankfully. There's probably CIA forums less restrictive on entry than we were.

I think the first one was a Digimon themed forum, some years ago. I started using internet around 2014/15, before that time it was for nothing more that buying things I couldn't find in stores and downloading albums I could't buy.

I think it was hive workshop or heaven of games or whatever it was called followed by warcraft 2 RU last August and well I finish up here , always wanted to be participate in forums in a way my original goal to go online was discuss video games that was back in 2016 well nearly 9 years after I found the place the perfect place here right here Retrogametalk.com

Since 2000. My first forum was GameFAQs and I still have an account there. Same username as here.

I was a member of various other forums that have come and gone. I've never actually stopped using them. I never got into social media. I don't use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram ect... I prefer forums. And I really miss AIM.

I think the first I posted on was at the official LEGO website in like, 1997? The guy who made LDraw had just died, I remember that. None of the other tweens knew what that was, so I bailed. After that it was a couple years till I got into Gamefaqs, and was pretty active there till 2003 or so. Real life took over, and then I went without the internet for a few years, cause supporting yourself is hard or whatever, and by the time I got back online the handful of places I lurked seemed either super toxic or super lame in some other way, and I never really saw anybody I wanted to socialize with till I stumbled upon the fine folks here. So, on forums for nearly 3/4 of my life, with the big fat caveat of a 20 year gap. Would still be ghost if y’all weren’t so rad, but you are. <3

I mostly stuck to some roleplay servers for some games I played online. I think the last one I was active in I stopped using back in around 2015ish. Most forums that I've been in though, I tended to lurk more than actually post anything.

Probably 2003 if the Neopets boards count then shifting over to GaiaOnline in 2004, the RuneScape forums and NSider in 2007 and NSider2 the following year. A lot of time on 4Chan until GamerGate happened and I got annoyed on there.

Ive been mostly a lurker throughout my life but the first forum that ive made an account on is the Terraria Community Forums in 2018.

i'm old, so around the late 90s early 00s was when I registered to a first forum with an hotmail account
