How go you like your mecha? fantastical, gritty, or somewhere in between?

Not sure what's the average density of mecha fans on the forum, so I'd figure I'd ask. To be as all encompassing as possible, feel free to comment with an kind of media (hence why it is in general discussion, rather than general gaming discussion).

The classifications proposed are very loose and only really serve to create a general outlook, as many mecha series dip their toes on all sides - it's all very interpretational.

Myself, I prefer the gritty, more grounded variety, which would be immediately boring for people peferring the other extreme, I suppose.

Front Mission, Patlabor.

Patlabor, 08th MS team, Mechwarrior. I tend to the more gritty side. I re-watched Patlabor 2 a week or so ago, just on a whim. Didn't realize how much I needed to see it, such a good movie.

I'm not huge into mecha (I know more about certain designs than their actual context lol), I just like simplified designs in general.

I really like both fantastical and gritty, and ironically Gundam 00 is exactly that. The story is heavy and gritty, but it's not afraid to end the series on a note of hope, also helps that the suits are the best in all Gundam series. Here are some examples:

Im partial to Evangelion, I had never played Armored Core before 6, and now im hooked. Id say ACs are a great balance of realistic and fantastical

I'm not at all versed in mecha... design? Styles? Whichever. So I don't know what category this would generally be, but I've always loved Yoji Shinkawa's mecha/walker illustrations and designs for Zone of the Enders and Metal Gear.

In general though I think I prefer the less directly humanoid designs.

MG Rex and Orbital Frames in general are amazing. My favorite OF is probably Neith

I have slight memories of Grendizer but I appreciate Super robot for a different reason from Real Robots.
