How do you think the gaming landscape will change in the coming years?

Well I believe western gaming will get worse,as they companies seem unable to learn so they will continue to produce Remakes and Slop until people will eventually stop buying there shit, besides some fanatic fanboys.I also believe that most good new games will come from Asia with also a raising focus on Indie Games, but high budget good Games probably will be limited to Asia in the near future. The western market will crash and maybe recover afterwards.Wich is sad but the Companies we once knew are long gone and will not come back.Exception may exist from time to time but as it is they are exceptions not the rule.

I see a future where all games will be streamed, the classic sagas will disappear and those that survive will be so distorted that they won't even be a shadow of their former selves. Most games will be open world and full of DLC.
This is something that I have seen start several years ago and I believe that indie games will still be an alternative.

Don't forget Digital Only and online Only with a payed subscription and in worst case a needed Id prove to play your games. And when you dare to mod your games to get a bricked console.I am really Blackpilled am I but look just at the trends its patern recognition, besides censorship will get worse thank to the payment companies who are are on a power drip to dictate what you can use your money on.

Trust me, you're talking about the wrong kind of puritans. Think 40+ year old white parents attending church,
As a mid 30's white man who regularly attends church, I think you've greatly over estimated how widespread your chosen world view is ::smug

Both are bad, but at least during the satanic panic, Dungeon and Dragons was still published & licensed out into video games, cartoons, toys, lunch boxes despite the outcry.
Same with the backlash against that old demonic yellow mouse during Pokémania.
How about the various pushback against wrestling, violence in children media in general.
They were certainly loud.
But they never got payment processors to strong arm censorship by threatening to effectively shutting down storefronts.

Left-wing is just as bad as Right-wing censorship.
All Censorship is bad.

I don't care from whom is pushing it, but I will recognise that the current push that's barely 15 years old far exceeds the 50+ years of what came before.
Imagine seeing Return of the Jedi in 1983 and using it to push an anti-NSFW law because of a Slave Leia.
And I say that fully knowing her depiction in that film was heavily criticised by some parental groups upon release.
But no one lobbied that the future availability of fiction moving forward should be dictated by the state under threat of terminating payment processing to any store that held a VHS/Betamax/Laserdisc.
Or that the state should use taxes to create an progressive alternative to Star Wars.
At least back then money was still accepted tender and activists weren't successfully pressuring the Government to refuse private purchases.

Lets agree to disagree and move on to prevent this thread from being locked.

I didn't put it in my first post but I doubt very much that consoles will continue to exist, I think everything will be reduced to PC and mobiles.

I think once AI is finally integrated into game design at most levels, we can safely call it a dead hobby. Same with all art, culture, entertainment, and media.

You are probably right especially with the faillure of the ps5 and Nintendo Switch2 and new xbox. Its only a matter of time as things are going now.It may not be a goodbye to consoles forever but it will look bleak for while.

Even than the Hobby won't die as we still have older games and a huge retro library, just because new good games are not comming out for a while doesn't mean the hobby is dead. But it surely will get a lot harder to find newer games made with soul and hearth as most will use AI for game design as it is convenient, yet there will alway be exceptsions, like today where some good games mostly Indie are comming out in a era of cheap remakes and slop.

the industry has always had a mix of small teams and massive teams, crappy hardware and amazing hardware, so no matter what it will always have some resemblance of what it used to be it's just distributed differently (as in there may be less or more of something)

even if corpos do everything with ai and make it soulless there will always be people making games as their passion

We will find a way to insert ourselves into the computer and become the games

  • Microsoft will go third-party, or rather PC-centric
  • Sony will try to find a niche in the "deluxe" console market but eventually discontinue PlayStation and back out of game dev altogether; PlayStation nostalgia will become a defining Millennial trait
  • A bunch of studios will release "streaming services" for their back catalogue of games, and fail
  • An Ouya-style budget console for "AI games" will be prototyped, released, and fail
  • The "premium handheld" fad will slowly die down
  • Nintendo will slowly shift focus to "fan" stuff (theme parks, merch, etc) and outsource more of their game dev (except for flagships)
  • Nintendo will eventually release a catalogue of older games on phones
  • Indie games will get bigger, more expensive-looking, and cheaper to develop with AI; venture capitalists will start to invade the indie dev sphere
  • Some multi-billionaire will outright buy Sega
  • Japanese games will have an easier time getting localized directly; Western localizers and dub voice actors will see their industry slowly wither away or lose ground to AI
  • Fan translations of older JP games, and fan mods in general, will become easier and more plentiful (though not necessarily high-quality)
  • We'll begin to see major dev studios which blur the line between "indie" and "AAA," some coming from the Middle East and China (China will become an even bigger player in the industry)
  • Someone will develop motion/gesture controls for phone games and it'll work relatively well but fail to catch on regardless
  • VR will never go mainstream, but AR will
  • RTS games and graphic adventures will stage a comeback, on phones
  • AI will blur the line between dating sims, virtual pets, and personal assistants; there will be a lot of 18+ "virtual girlfriend" type stuff coming out of Japan and elsewhere
  • There will be another wave of backlash in the West against "Eastern games" similar to the anti-JP sentiment of the 2000s, mostly based on "family values" and gambling concerns; Nintendo will weather this storm, but many smaller devs won't
  • High-end GPUs will become prohibitively expensive, and the market for mid-budget games will flourish (mostly populated by indie devs)
  • Soon after Gabe Newell dies, Steam will become a hellscape of ads, microtransactions, and hidden costs; competitors will finally emerge

gaming is one of the few things I hope regresses.

Less super high budget games please. 90s/2000s plz

I think it will get worse before it gets better though
