How do you choose your characters in videogames?

My criteria usually goes in this order.
- What weapon or fighting style do they have?
If I can't decide based on that then:
- Are they an attractive female? or a normal/generic looking male?
If I still can't decide by this then:
- Who's looks the closest to a slacker and doesn't look like they're so far up their own ass?
And finally:
- Who's the "Ryu" here?

With Phantasy Star Online, at least the newer ones, it's tough for me to pick & stick to one to dive in with.

when I went back to ephinea a couple years ago I chose RAmar and really wish I hadn't, absurdly boring gameplay up until a ways into ultimate. I really prefer character setups that allow me to switch pretty frequently, bcs I often don't know quite what I'm looking for until I'm comfortable with the game itself

Fascinating to see the androphobia always evinced by this question.

When I try a fighting game for the first time, I go for the least appealing ones...
There's no specific reason, but maybe, subconsciously, I think they're the strongest.

While I think it's fine that PSU onwards allowed class change I think it was nice that a person had to fully commit to a race/class in the first game.
