everyone is know silent protagonist, the most popular one link from the legend of zelda, mc persona franchise, and also dragon quest
but this type protagonist was different to one and another, it really makes me curious, because when i playing link, i never felt that i'm the one in the story its link story, but its different when playing games thats give you choice at everything like it basically you was the character , and i know this type thing describe as self insert.

this the interesting part, because people can have different opinion about it, you can clearly know the character belong to self insert like mc in dragon quest, or meant to be their own character like link, and camus from metroid. there still one type i can say was in the middle of this category, they feel like self insert, but has personality that enough for them to being real character, example of this was persona mc, and fire emblem avatar (except byleth from 3h, they really bland lol).

i'm focused on persona mc, since it was the reason why i make this, first in persona game everyone know that every character has tarot card that describe their path, its sorta like an archtype. like magician an arcana for funny guy that has issue, or lover arcana for pretty girl that also have issue, just like that. So what mc, is fool arcana (makoto, kotone,yu,and ren), my first persona exprience was persona 3, i remember playing makoto, see his reaction was like ...., and just waw so he's a quiet guy, then i playing persona 3 portable for femc, then more shocked see how different her with makoto, when theyre meant to be a counterpart, because i'm usually expect she just the same, although i already knew since both has really different design, as playing the different was literally in everything, the music, event, especially the dialogues!!!, honestly kotone was really fun experience. next game was persona 4, like expected it's chad narukami time, but if i'm being honest i can't put what yu personality is, unlike makoto and kotone. he's just more normal and neutral at everything.

after watch people talk about this game, i found many people talk about mc, like it was them that taking a part in story, how they're choose what character their romance because its their favorite character, after that makes me think its meant for me?, i never treated a character that has personality like that, and begun get more curious about it, seriously i just get know that self insert was massive culture especially in isekai anime and jrpg/otome games. Since i think it just like that::hellmo,maybe thats the reason why all the mc have same personality lol.

it's getting out of the topic welp ::star-war, but self insert in nowaday was purposely make for silent gacha protagonist, with the start them being lost memories, like (caelus/stelle), i think this trope was overused, and also it's not just silent protagonist that can be self insert.
so what's your favorite silent protagonist?

Classic Doomguy

His expressions in the HUD are iconic

I don't like modern doomguy/doomslayer as much, he's too over the top for my tastes ::cirnoshrug But that's just me

The main character from Digimon, Time Stranger. Kinda reminds me of the persona character.

I think that many silent mc are meant to be a blank slate to project with your own thoughts on what decisions to take and how approach situations, more than self-inserting per say, and then just watching how they interact with the world in their own personal way other than that, even more if they have a specific canonical personality. (almost as if you're driving them subconsciously, which fits with the game aspect)

I liked how expressive most versions of Link are, every one of them has a subtle personality underneath that silence.

I have always loved Gordon Freeman's superhuman ability to not giving a fuck even as he's the most wanted man on earth, faces an alien invasion and sees everyone he knows and worked with die gruesome deaths at the hands of both.

He doesn't even utter a word.

MY MAN.

Freeman all fucking day. He's smart as hell, and totally badass.

Chell from Portal is also pretty awesome, but she's no Gordon Freeman.
