Look, I love stories about people finding games through YouTube and falling in love with them.

There's something beautiful about them.

But I feel that the opposite is just as fascinating.

Have you ever been discouraged from playing a game because of YouTube? It doesn't necessarily have to be because of the YouTuber's opinion, but because the game had game-breaking bugs you learned about there, or because a longplay showed you it wasn't going to be your thing... whatever works, as long as it actively stopped you from playing something.

I was going to get "Fallout Shelter" until a couple of brutal videos made me think better of it — dodged a bullet there, too.

You?

It convinced me games like Repo, Among Us and Lethal Company are a waste of my time. I strongly dislike games like these where they are just hinged on the concept of cheap multiplayer waste.

More than I can count in the past couple of years..
After I jail-broke my PS3, I started downloading all kinds of games. But I tempered this by looking up reviews of various game to see if they were worth downloading in the first place.. Classic Game Room in particular was really handy for this because they were on the shorter side, while also showing a fair amount of actual gameplay footage without the fluff..

I came close when researching a game brought up on this forum. I found a video (in the spoiler on this post) that was running at 10 frames per second and almost immediately lost all interest, but looking at a video from another user thankfully proved the game didn't actually run that poorly.

A second opinion can't hurt.

There's no doubt that my childhood enthusiasm for Nintendo has waned largely as a result of seeing the endless praise for everything they've done.

I had an NES, N64, and GBA as a kid, and I love lots of games on all those systems... But I barely ever see NES get talked about anymore, GBA seems to only get attention for the mainline titles, and N64 gets praised like a haven of glorious perfection.

I've in particular developed a distaste for Nintendo's "endless casual" games - I thought Animal Crossing and Tomodachi Life were reasonably fun as a kid, but I really want no part of them now. Seeing stuff like "Vinny - Animal Crossing New Horizons (Part 36)" turns my indifference into vitriol.

For the more positive side of this situation, though, review videos have saved me no small amount of money and time. It's always nice to have a better idea of what I'm getting into before I commit.

Then there's the weird one... Diddy Kong Racing. I never had it as a kid and never really went looking for it. Videos I've seen on it since have simultaneously made me more interested - cool looking mechanics, neat tracks, decent music - and less interested - the colors and sounds make it seem like a game for infants, and everyone I've seen talk about it has that know-it-all adorkable voice that I hate (which just makes me associate it with the game since no videos I've seen sound like a normal human being, street urchin, urbane Frasier clone, etc.). The end result? A continuing indifference.

With First metal gear (NES)
I watched some videos about it and I thought it would be fun or a good point to start in the franchise,
Dude what a mistake, the long play made see it easy but when I played I hated, one of the worst afternoon in my life

Yes. I heard of Cuphead from Youtube when it came out and watched a few videos on "Oh it's too hard!!!!!" There were videos of people talking bad about the game because they were bad at the game. That said, I saw enough good stuff about the game that I bought it... it is one of my favorite games ever, lol.

On the other hand, Tomb Raider (2013) was encouraged by a few people I sometimes watch so I bought the game, only to find that it was (in my opinion) shitty Uncharted.

Two situations, I delayed myself from buying Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 because of some drama over a few optional gay scenes mostly to do with the creator going a bit nuts, and this was during a bad time In gaming where certain franchises were being killed by terrible writing with ham-fisted messages nobody really wants. Bought It much alter when It was on sale and kind of regret It but the wound healed from that era. The lesson Is: You gotta take some game dev drama with a hint of salt, unless It Involves Ubisoft, SBI, the ESA, or Nintendo because f*** them with a with several willy petes (AKA: White phosphorous grenades, AKA: Incendiary grenades) tied to a pointed stick

Another situation Is happened before the worst day of my life happened (Unrelated, but I was a much different and less depressing person back then). I was going to do a longplay of Countdown Vampires, but then AVGN covered It In the most half-assed way I seen (And there were other horror game YouTubers that half-assed It almost as bad In ways that disappointed me.) that would make the effort go to complete s***. meaning people are not going to search It because "IT'S BAD CUZ BIG NUMBER REVIEWER SAID SO". Also dumb because my channel was a failure anyway. Still did It some time later but only the Special Story mode... which Is dumber than this situation.

Really you should not take the word of YouTubers you may have been a fan of In the past, or currently are. Everyone can be full of s***, have a skill Issue, or just wants money/fame and not a community that Isn't some big circle jerk.

Nope... like with movies or TV shows, I never go by what others think. My opinions and theirs are never the same. Just because ten people said something was bad or awful doesn't mean it is...

Honestly, I prefer to come to my own conclusions.

As I mentioned in the thread about movies and such, I tend not to watch reviews before trying/watching something. I prefer to go in with a blank slate, so to speak. If I already have an opinion, even a hint of something being good or bad, it can subconsciously skew my view of it.

The old thinky meats are funny like that in us humans.

Take the Deadpool game, for example. I loved it.... I thought the mechanics were a bit wonky.... Aside from that, I found the game good. But, after watching people's reviews, most said it was trash, a flop, not worth getting, etc. Most likely, their opinions wouldn't have swayed me anyway, since I love Deadpool.

But if I weren't a fan, it could have easily swayed me.

So no, I don't let reviews discourage me from playing a game.
If it looks like I'll enjoy it, I'll play it first and come to my own conclusion.

There was drama? O.O

Was this during the Machinima shitshow?

Yeah. Some of the games I watched people play on YT I ended up buying and loving (like Deadly Premonition or Voices of the Void), but many were completely killed just from over consumption. Minecraft was like this I bought Minecraft after watching a score of videos from a Youtuber (davidangel64, I think) but after watching hundreds of hours of Yogscast I couldn't play more than a few minutes without getting bored. Same with Project Zomboid and DayZ
