A short while ago I read a very strange manga called Becchin & Mandara.
It's about two girls surviving in a supernatural post apocalypse in a place between worlds called the Dry Riverbed. They live inside of a tank and quarrel with the local crazy nudist Caretaker of the land.
It's extremely opaque and difficult to follow at times, but I adore it, both the art and the fantastic concepts played with. Themes of war, struggle in times of crisis, the ways that mental illness can warp your perception of the world, and how a young and vulnerable mind may deal with the inevitability of universal destruction and agony. I find it quite interesting, but difficult to penetrate.
If anybody else has read this manga, I would like to hear your thoughts about it, and your interpretation of the events within, as well as any potential meanings.
Pics related; some stuff from the first few chapters that I found interesting. There's recurring imagery of a specific protagonist and huge skylines on fire, but it's never elaborated on and it implies something about the character's past but everything known about that character seems to go against this imagery. There's also a scene where one of the girls watches a group of zombies/skeletons playing a baseball game, but nowhere else in the story is it implied or shown that the zombies/undead in the setting are capable of doing such things. They're shown to speak and think, but seem to be very distracted and "far away" in their behavior. Never once do they show this kind of focus and consciousness before or after. I wonder what it means.
