Handheld entries that felt as great as home console ones

Tekken 6, The Warriors, and Burnout Legends, all on PSP, has the same quality as home console release minus the graphics, and costumes for Tekken 6 but other than that, it's all good.

Surprised that someone hasn't mentioned the Final Fantasy remakes on the PSP, unless I missed it.

Aside from III, they had some amazing sprite-art that feels more HD than games touted as HD-2D, and just completely humiliate the Pixel Remasters.

The spritework on I and II was great, they're my favourite versions of them too. IV not so much.
The soundtrack too, very beautiful

We're talking about Phantasy Star Portable, but can we mention Phantasy Star 0? A game like this on the DS of all things feels very impressive, and its very "up-there" with the original if you were to ask me.

As a 3D game on the DS it was impressive looking (it was like that Magician of Oz RPG) and it was still quite a lengthy ARPG with a decent online experience in your pocket.

The only small flaw the game had was the DS resolution making the game looks ugly if you played on a bigger screen unless you could do internal upscale and the lack of a circle pad meant that going into the menus meant you had to stay still (whereas PSO allowed you to move around as you browsed your inventory).

This game deserved a remake or sequel on the 3DS but Sega didn't bother enough to do so as they focused their efforts on PS Portable 2 and later PSO2...

I've seen people complain that certain DS and 3DS games have "bad graphics" because they're looking at screenshots on large screens. But I think those games look phenomenal when you actually play them on the right hardware or upscale them right.

Chrono Trigger on the Nintendo DS
My main problem with the DS version is the audio quality is garbage and the music is probably one of the best parts of the game. All of Chrono Trigger's ports have terrible audio quality compared to the snes version.

That's the issue with low res game (like Gameboy/GBA or Gamegear games) even via emulation. Thankfully modern emulators can internally upscale so they don't look too bad on the eyes.

I still liked doing 999 on a DSi XL because the screen had a filter that made it look smoother for the pixel art.

i cant speak on many because i dont really like most of the ds and 3ds library but i can say that digimon redigitize decode looks like complete ass on a actual 3ds, its one of the few games id argue upscaling is a genuine requirement

Let me tell you the tale of a popular at the time anime called Astro Boy 2003, the series was great, if not as memorable as the OG or 80's versions, in the heyday, two games reached America, a PS2 adaptation of the Anime and one with a original plot for the GBA

PS2? a Mid 3D brawler that mistook the "Licensed games cliches to avoid" book as an instruction manual

GBA game? Omega Factor, easly not only the best Anime based game on the console, but possibly the best GBA game PERIOD, a touching plot, fluid gameplay, smooth graphics (If flickery once too much shit gathers) and an entire orchesta set fire, if you love Astro Boy you must play it for not being a recycle of the 2003 series instead being an epic celebration to all of Ozamu Tezuka's work, if not, the plot works by itself and you still have a fire beat-em-up to enjoy

Treasure were killing it.

Most of my answers have been taken already, but I didnt notice anyone mention Donkey Kong on the Gameboy yet. That title punched so far above its weight it is crazy.

Treasure was an absurdly good studio, holy shit.
Most of the time. You're not going to find many defenders of Advanced Guardian Heroes.

Gunstar Superheroes is pretty great, but that first section of General Orange's stage sucks on Hard mode. I really don't know how I got past it back in the day with both Red and Blue's respective campaigns.

Okay, I've honestly never even heard of Advanced Guardian Heroes, lol. But I mean, Ikaruga? Alien Soldier? Radiant Silvergun? Sin and Punishment? Gunstar Heroes? DAMN!

Why do you think I said most of the time. Nothing wrong with the other games you mentioned on the list. Though you have some that are love it or hate it with Gunstar Superheroes. I do highly prefer Ikaruga over Radiant Silvergun. You could not even get me to go through insane SHMUP ever again.

The problem was moreso the speakers on the DS, which made the music sound tinny. Yasunori Masuda worked on the music for the DS port, and he tried to adjust the audio samples to better work with the limitations of the DS' speakers. I honestly don't think it sounds terrible. With headphones on it actually sounds pretty great, in my opinion.

I've never played it on an actual DS, only through emulation so I don't think the speakers were the issue.

If the DS version could ever sound like this the way the snes version can with the MSU-1 patch then maybe I'll give it a try

But having a map isn't really a big deal in Chrono Trigger. The dungeons are simple and there's barely any secrets and the extra content is probably about as good as square's extra content usually is so for me having being able to play the game with the original soundtrack in uncompressed CD quality audio beats out whatever additions the DS version adds.

I've played on real hardware and emulation and had no issues with the music in either occasion, so to each their own I guess.

If you want a version of the game with all of the bells and whistles of the DS version with none of the DS crustiness, then I recommend the Steam version with mods to tidy up the game and to add nicer music.

I've noticed that SNES DKC fans heavily criticised those ports and while I can understand that many GBA ports of SNES games aren't perfect (even ALTTP and Super Mario World) I still think that was great to play one decade old 16-bits game in your pocket.

Treasure was an absurdly good studio, holy shit.
And it's sad that they're non-existent today... They really made arcade games even when it started to fade out.

Haven't heard of AGH (I need to finally do the original) but I would agree that their post-Ikaruga era was when they started to become less proficient (despite some good games like Astro Boy and S&P Wii). Maybe they have given everything in the 90's so that they became tired or that some staff went somewhere else.

Platinum Games are reminiscent of them but that's still not the same. At least we still had games that aren't too far from their game design such as Noitu Love 2, Bleed 1&2 and even the first Freedom Planet when you think about it.

I agree that, like Kirby Super Star Ultra, the SNES version had the superior audio yet if a theme is good it's hard to make it sound bad regardless of the soundchip.

But I think that a game made for a small speaker isn't meant to be listened on bigger ones on PC.

The GBA ports of Super Mario Bros games I find superior to their SNES counterparts.

Please play the original. The 360 port is actually the best version of the game, but good luck finding it there anymore, outside of piracy. If you want a true sequel to Guardian Heroes, play Code of Princess (3DS, PC). There is an advanced port called Code of Princess EX (Switch, PC), but I don't like it as much as the original. Also, they could not get the license for the awesome English dub in all versions except the 3DS original. Which is why I stick with that one. Many ex-Treasure employees worked on this game.

Treasure pretty much has done nothing else since Star Successor. The XBLA version of Guardian Heroes was the last major thing they did. They're pretty much dead at this point.

Kirby Super Star Ultra I still love today, and is so much fun to play.

But I can't play that one on my phone and the mobile port is embarrassingly bad and probably can't be modded.

It's true. I never liked playing my Lite on speakers, almost always had my earphones on

Agreed. I see complaints about the DKC games and I disagree. Sure, the sound is more compressed and the screen is smaller, but firstly: It's Donkey Kong Country, come on. And secondly: These games added MORE stuff. DKC1 didn't add that much, but DKC2 and 3 especially added lots of extra levels and things, which I think was a really awesome addition.
