Howdy,

I played some Guitar Hero and Frets on Fire a decade ago, but this game blew my mind:
https://retrogametalk.com/repository/nes-roms/dpad-hero-2-homebrew-nes/

It is simple... simply amazing, and coop mode is absolute blast.

Some forum user made a term for the genre "Guitarvania", I love it.
Just all those GH/Rock Band rhythm games for PS2 are a bit bloated with fancy graphics, demanding powerful hardware and require a guitar controller to really get into it fully...

So I wonder now, is there more retro or newer homebrew games like that, which focus to play on regular gamepad for 2 players coop?

Or maybe somebody could recommend where to download ready to use fresh FoF or FoFiX archive with various mods and songs.
Back in the days I found some cool torrents, but it was lost in time warp. Thanks!

Check out Clone Hero and YARG, you won't be disappointed.

This.

I've started mapping drum songs with CloneHero from MIDI drums. From that point I could export the song to pretty much every other rythm games out there, even VR games like Beat Saber.

Wow, this the first time I hear about Clone Hero, looks very promising. Thank you!
But the question remains, where to find all-in-one packs for it?
Like some themed one with coop songs from Guitar Hero/Rock Band let's say.

I tried to search the web and got confused.

Google for "CloneHero chorus encore", you'll find everything you need there.

So, this one is old but just wanna share…

I finally tried latest public beta of Clone Hero, and it definitely rocks.
I thought I will be missing that career progress from original games (I only played GH3 on PC eons ago), and nah, CH has much more to offer, it is really easy to find your favourite songs, all these modifiers like drunk mode makes totally different experience ::winkfelix

As for customisation, when I played Frets on Fire back then, some mods allowed you to turn the appearance of the game to look like all those console titles, it was cool.
And Clone Hero is just next level, there is per song customization with different highways, background image or even video clip, lyrics, just copy paste the files. Many other options. This is amazing, who needs fancy menus now.

The game runs smoothly on my junky box with 1080p@60FPS, which was quite a surprise. I even bought Guitar Hero Live 6 frets guitar controller, it looks and feels so stylish, natively supported in Linux, and most important - Clone Hero can automatically convert standard 5 fret tracks into 6 frets!
May Confucius bless the guy who wrote the drivers!

One thing, don’t trust the Internets where they say the guitar is Bluetooth and just works if you have it, hell no, it is a complete nonsense as anything else random people post online nowadays. You need a special console USB dongle receiver, only avoid xbox one (360 is fine), it will be painful experience. Refer to CH manual.
Well technically it is a proprietary BT and someone hacked it too, but that’s require engineering degree and messing up with microcontrollers and ms win, I’ll pass. I wanna only shred!

…beginning to like loud music again!
