"Gamers who purchased the retail box are now expressing even more frustration after it was officially confirmed that PS5 product codes in Japan will expire 170 days after the game's scheduled launch date of November 19, 2026.

Rockstar clarified that the expiration period is only applicable to the PS5 version of the game in Japan and won't affect buyers in the rest of the world. The company also confirmed that codes purchased for the Xbox are not region locked and will not expire, but it did not explain why it's implementing the policy on one platform but not the other."

Wtf?! The industry keeps getting worse... Amd why it's always on PlayStation?

Play has several limits it seems.

Edit: I also don't doubt they'll do this sort of "physical code in the box has a hard and fast expiry" thing elsewhere. They definitely used to do it with stuff like those "online passes" back in the day.

Control on an insane scale and I say this as a Rockstar D-sucker.
I am picturing Japanese warehouses burning unsold boxes after that expiry passes lol

It's like Rockstar hired their worse enemies to handle this shit.
You're probably more correct than you think..

I found out this morning. Sucks hard. I know Japan doesn't have that many GTA players, but good amount of them are fans. I have a feeling Sony is involved with this somehow. Glad I stopped caring for GTA after IV.

Every bit of news I get regarding GTA6 lately seems more and more like Rockstar wanting to emulate John Romero's "Suck It Down" ads from the late 90's, and without a trace or irony.

I stopped after San Andreas because I didn't like what I saw when I first looked at IV (even though I briefly liked V).

Remarkably smart move, it turns out!

San Andreas I did not even like, and never want to go back to it ever again. I should add some extra context, but by the time IV's Lost and The Damned DLC came out, I was more than done with not only GTA, but sandbox and sandbox crime games in general. I was tired of them by late 6th generation, but after Saints Row 2 everything else felt small, minimal, or redundant. The only open world games I've enjoyed are Spider-Man and the Tsushima/Yotei games.

Friendly reminder that Yakuza 7 made its New Game+ DLC for Japan only and then in Yakuza 8, it was worldwide DLC. I don't trust the snake oil salesmen at the top about this

I really wonder why it's this way. Such an odd choice. Maybe it's some legal bs? Probably greed from rockstar though.

I hate the way shit is going right now.

Kinda related, hear me out.

I decided to go back and try Assassin's Creed IV again since the remake came out. I never really liked it because of the boat combat, but something clicked and I just grinded up to 50%. I decided to move back to Linux recently because of some sketch shit Microshaft is pulling with Windows right now, and backed up my save for the move over since it doesn't have cloud save on Ubisoft Connect (yeah, I bought the games on UC it was cheaper at the time lol) and now that I'm back on Linux, my save file corrupted during transfer.

Not only that, but the game doesn't even freakin launch when you run it through a container for Connect, so I got fed up and loaded the game onto my PS Triple. Now I'm back to playing the game, with the added benefit of having all of the DLC's instead of just the ones Ubisoft allowed people to keep when they turned off the servers. Legitimately didn't know I was missing like 6 DLC's because they have the original game as the "Gold" edition when you buy it, which doesn't come with everything, and also doesn't give you the option to buy the remaining ones because the authentication server was shut down, effectively making them useless downloads on the PC Version.

Seriously am fed up with modern gaming dog. I just want to enjoy my games man.

From what I see, this is something they want to do to force the PS6 on the market when it's released or announced, which will probably be around that time.
They already have the precedent of players staying on the PS4 Pro until (hypothetically, in my opinion) the end of the PS5 Pro's life time, and that's not good for business.

They're using Japan (a market second only to the UK in terms of complacency) to test the waters with a game that isn't very popular there. Later, they'll undoubtedly do the same with IP that will draw the massive audience.
This come from my paranoid and conspiratorial side talking, clearly none of this is confirmed, but seeing how these companies have been operating lately, I can't think of any other explanation.

Sorry for being a bit inflammatory, it Sucks but I'm not toooo sympathetic towards their gaming culture that sides with developers and dislikes emulation/modding/piracy. They're getting what they asked for 🤷

It's also sad to see that we've regressed so much to the point that nobody cares if it's wasteful. The conversation is about scummy anticonsumer practices no doubt, but printing expiring plastic boxes are such a stupid waste of plastic.
