Gaming Urban legends/Myths/Hoaxes

Those guys were master trolls back then. ?
The best part? Depending on your version of Tomb Raider 3 (I think it's supposed to be for the NTSC 1.0 - and with physical hardware only) that code works...
...by putting Lara in her Swimsuit and changing the colour of the suit to match her skin tone. And making Lara a blonde. Which she would have to be to run around in a jungle in a skin tone swimsuit.

i've played those games countless times. aura usually shows up and says "get a move on, you found everything in vol. 1 and it's been 40 hours. go to part 2, NOW!!!"
Unexpected!
Sounds like a good Easter Egg! Right...? :D

not going to lie, i do expect at some point for a game to be made, and if you do take to long to beat it, one of the characters berates you and turns into a super boss for you to fight. zelda would have done that to me in both botw and totk.

Like Pokémon black and white, but instead of a boss you get emotional damage

Pikablu was passed around a lot before the release of 2nd gen.
I was so hyped to catch a marill when I got silver.

Glad to see I wasn't the only victim of the EGM sonic tails melee prank. It truly was a cruel joke...
<_<
>_>;

Pokémon Gen 1 (Red, Blue, and Yellow) had PLENTY OF Urban Legends/Myths/Hoaxes back in the day, as it was stated time and time before.

Mew under the truck, Bill's Secret Garden, PokéGods, Yoshi, you name 'em!

speaking of pokemon its always been a tradition to just mash left and right on the dpad when capturing the pokemon to supposedly increase the chances. i wonder if theres actually some basis to that or if its just some meaningless ritual ive never got too deep into the games so i wouldnt know

When I was a kid, it was holding up+B as soon as the pokeball's opening animation played.

I thought for a moment, pressing A and alternating left and right.

i've heard about this. no, the player can not effect the capture chance. it is complete rng. and, apparently, the ultra ball sucks more than the great ball. 25% [ultra] to 50% [great].

Master Ball failure ratio is minimal, but not impossible.

Totally forgot...

Recalled something, years ago, thanks to Waffles' article about Mischief Makers.
There was supposedly an extra world (post-game/sixth world), beyond the 5th one and tried *almost everything*, trying to access this apparent existing world.

My only bet, is trying the Japanese Version (Yuke Yuke! Troublemakers!), to finally get to the truth.

Maybe around that time, it was my first touch with GameFAQs, browsing the internet (2006-2007).

I grew up on video game magazines and remember their April Fool’s pranks pretty memorably one. However, I never really fell for them. When I was younger, I fell for the ‘revive Aeros’ rumors for a while. I was younger and desperate for the idea of golden endings.

My favorite urban legend, though, was an early creepypasta known as The Truth About The Secret of Evermore/Ed Kann/‘The Noise Coming From Inside Children’.

https://rainwoodworks.blogspot.com/2010/09/secret-of-evermore-was-one-of-my.html?m=1

For those who’ve never seen it, this pasta asserts that ‘The Secret of Evermore’ was originally meant to be a much darker game. It does this by using some examples from the game itself, as well as asserting that a man named Ed Kann, who has brief cult status for a disturbing horror story called ‘The Noises Coming From Inside Children’, was part of the scenario development team.

Why this pasta works is that it plays so well against normal tropes of the time: there’s no supernatural element and what conspiracy is there is low stakes - it just reads as trying to tell you that there’s something darker to this childhood game, and you can see that by looking a little deeper. It’s a fantastic creepypasta and, I’ll be ashamed to admit, for a while I thought it was possible it was real. And I was in undergrad at the time. Being a big horror fan I wanted this to be real to try and find this story.

Unfortunately, it is just a pasta. There is a follow up blog to this initial story called ‘Who Is Ed Kann?’ which features the author trying to find Ed, and the blog provides deeply conflicting information with the original story, along with trying too hard and revealing the hoax because of it. Still, I can’t help but have a soft spot for it all, if just for tricking me for a while.

I don't remember if it was a big legend but in Phantasy Star Online there was rumours around the 4 things on the floor that emitted light in the medical center.

Some talked about a certain "Forest 3" area and other told about a super rare item.

Obviously those are purely cosmetics.

The only secret I know is that in the online quest Towards The Future after finishing the final part, before getting your reward you had a secret teleport leading to Ruins 1 and if you go under the waterfall with a Branch of Paku Paku (a rather common rare sceptre) it will slowly turn into the Striker of Chao after a small conversation with an invisible NPC (the Chao itself).
